1 ANNUAL REPORT Neutron Scattering Special Interest Group (SIG) The neutron scattering Special Interest Group elected Katharine Page from the Lujan Neutron Scattering Center of the LANSCE Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory, as chair for The Neutron Scattering SIG jointly sponsored six half day sessions and one full day session with the Powder and SIGs at the ACA 2013 Meeting in Waikiki, Hawaii. The Neutron SIG supported an additional session with the Small Angle Scattering SIG, but this session was cancelled. The list of Neutron SIG sponsored sessions at the ACA 2013 meeting is given below Sessions Organizer(s) Organizing SIGs Nanomaterial Structure from Thomas Proffen Diffraction Data - I: Theory and Modeling Nanomaterial Structure from Katharine Page Diffraction Data - II: Experimental Advances for a Sustainable Future Olaf Borkiewicz Peter Khalifah for a Sustainable Future & Structure/Function of Metal-Organic Frameworks Olaf Borkiewicz Peter Khalifah Xiaoping Wang / Service/ Small Mol. Toby from Argonne National Lab on Saturday, July 20. The Neutron SIG awarded the Margaret C. Etter student lecturer award to Rebecca Beadling from University of Pennsylvania for her work entitled A Neutron Diffraction Investigation of the Solid-Solution Na 2 (Zn,Co)SiO 4. Her oral presentation, co-authored by Ashfia Huq and Charles Lake, was given in session 13.18: Nanodomains and Beyond. Dr. Huibo Cao (Quantum Condensed Matter Division of the Neutron Science Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory) was appointed by the neutron SIG executive committee to be the 2014 chair of the Neutron SIG.
2 In following with the tradition of having joint SIG meetings the Neutron Scattering, Powder and SIGs met Monday, July 22 at 5:00 PM to discuss group affairs. Katharine Page was in attendance to represent the Neutron SIG, and Peter Khalifah and Antonio Moreira Dos Santos represented the and Powder SIGs, respectively. In advance of this meeting, the chairs coordinated an message to the members to request ideas for session and workshop topics for the 2014 meeting. Approximately 15 members were in attendance. The onsite officers from the Neutron, Powder, and SIGs met immediately following the joint SIG meeting to finalize plans for nine sessions and one workshop to propose for the planning session of the 2013 Annual ACA Meeting in Albuquerque, NM. The neutron SIG additionally supports one session and one workshop with the BioMac SIG. The Neutron SIG proposed sessions and workshops for the 2014 Annual Meeting are presented below (to be confirmed) Session Ideas SIG Support In situ studies and parametric structural refinement, Synchrotron, Small Molecule Disorder and Inhomogeneity in Complex probed with PDF 3D Magnetic Structures from 1D Data Instrumentation and Methods for Structure Solution of Nanosized Structure and Dynamics Of Energy Related Producing and Transporting Energy: Thermoelectrics, Supertonductors, Photovoltaics, and Light Harvesting, Synchrotron Powder,, Neutron, Small Angle Powder,, Neutron Innovative Ways of Finding Atoms Structural Understanding of Actinides & Radioactive Earth and Environment Sciences, Service Crystallography? The SIGs also discussed activities for promoting the 2014 International Year of Crystallography. Member efforts that were shared included hosting public outreach events at universities and laboratories, updating online public information forums, holding crystallography as art contests to produce promotional materials, and posting IUCR, Nobel or other available poster materials at our institutions. Katharine Page will represent the Neutron SIG at the Thursday planning meeting for the 2014 Annual Meeting. Katharine Page Neutron Scattering SIG Chair 2013 kpage@lanl.gov
