2 Course Specifications Class hours: Sunday and Tuesday: 8:00 to 9:30 AM. Recitation lecture: Location: Textile engineering, class 10 Course website: Course prerequisites: Mathematics (algebra, solutions of linear equations, basic differentiation and integration, and basic geometry (area, volumes) Chemistry (stochiometry, concept of mole, molecular weight, concentration, etc.) 2

3 Course Specifications Course Notes: Lecture notes and study guides will be posted to the website. These lecture notes are designed in a format for ease note-taking and allow for more time to think about the material rather than spending the lecture trying to copy the material from board. Grading: Assignments: 10% Exams (2): 40% Final: 50 % Assignments: Assignments will be due usually a week from assigned date at the end of specified lecture period. Exams: Two exams will be given with the locations, dates and times listed on the class web site. You have one week after, the exam is returned to you to request for re-grading. Final exam: The final exam will be comprehensive and will be given at the listed time and date. 3

4 Course Description Principles of chemical engineering form the foundation for nearly all chemical engineering problems and analysis. This course will provide an introduction to the principles and calculation techniques used in the field of Chemical Engineering. This course is designed to: Provide you with the fundamentals of material balances as applied to chemical engineering to enable the analysis of a chemical process Teach you the fundamental concepts of energy balance and heat transfer mechanisms. Obtaining a solid understanding of the fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics 4

7 Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 1. Convert quantities from one set of units to another quickly and accurately. 2. Define and determine properties of process streams including fluid density, flow rate, chemical compositions, fluid pressure, and temperature. 3. Draw and label process flowcharts. Write and solve material balance equations for single-unit and multiple-unit processes with recycle and bypass and reactive processes. 4. Understand the concepts related to fundamentals of energy balance and heat transfer 5. Learn the fluid properties and understand fluid statics, buoyancy, and flow in pips 7

8 New Aspects in This Course Teaching performance: Lectures will be taught by Power Point; besides, board may be used for examples and extra exercises. Notes writing will be in English; However, they will be translated to Farsi to better understand the concepts of the course.
