1 CHEMISTRY 446 Organometallic Chemistry SPRING 2013 SYLLABUS Instructor: Dr. Holly D. Bendorf Office: 209 HBC Phone: (w), (h) Course Schedule Lecture: MWF 8:00 8:50 am in Heim 215 Lab: T 1:00-4:50 pm in Heim 239 Office Hours Monday, Wednesday Thursday from 2:30 3:30 pm by appointment. Course Description CHEM 446, Organometallic Chemistry, explores the chemistry of compounds containing metal-carbon bonds. This course will cover the structure bonding of organometallic compounds, reactions reaction mechanisms, spectroscopy, the use of organometallics in industrial processes organic synthesis. Prerequisite: CHEM 221. Text Materials Organometallic Chemistry, Second Edition, by Spessard Miessler, Oxford University Press. Bound laboratory notebook Safety glasses or goggles. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the structure bonding of organometallic compounds. 2. Characterize organometallic compounds using modern spectroscopic techniques. 3. Describe the fundamental organometallic reaction types. 4. Provide examples of how organotransition metal chemistry is used in industry in organic synthesis. Departmental Objectives This course helps to fulfill the following Department of Chemistry learning objectives: - Exhibit proficiency in the major sub-disciplines of chemistry - Perform wet laboratory techniques as appropriate to the major sub-disciplines of chemistry - Underst use modern chemical instrumentation - Exhibit integrative, problem-solving skills, such as experimental design data interpretation - Communicate the results of chemical investigations effectively in written oral form - Search the chemical literature, evaluate the results of the search, access desired research materials - Demonstrate responsible conduct in the laboratory, including laboratory safety ethical research practices College Mission The course supports the mission of Lycoming College to provide a distinguished baccalaureate education in the liberal arts sciences.

2 Grading Criteria Quizzes 15% Mid-Semester Exams 30% Homework Assignments 10% Literature Project 10% Laboratory 15% Final Exam 20% Final grades are assigned based on the following scale: A %, B %, C %, D %, F <60%. These ranges include +/- grades. Passing grades must be earned in the lab lecture portion in order to receive a passing grade for the course. Final Grade A B C D F Interpretation (from the Lycoming College Catalog) Excellent: Signifies superior achievement through mastery of content or skills demonstration of creative independent thinking. Good: Signifies better-than-average achievement wherein the student reveals insight understing. Satisfactory: Signifies satisfactory achievement wherein the student s work has been of average quality quantity. The student has demonstrated basic competence in the subject area may enroll in additional coursework. Passing: Signifies unsatisfactory achievement wherein the student met only the minimum requirements for passing the course should not continue in the subject area without departmental advice. Failing: Signifies that the student has not met the minimum requirements for passing the course. A failing grade in the course may also result from academic dishonesty or from excessive unexcused absences. Exams Quizzes There will be approximately five quizzes (dates TBA) on the reading lecture material. A sixth quiz, on the transition metal region of the periodic table, will be given at the January 22 lab meeting. Mid-semester exams will be administered during the lab period on Tuesday, February 12 Tuesday, March 26. The final exam on Thursday, April 25 at 8:30 am is cumulative is similar in format to the mid-semester exams. Reading Assignments Readings from the text chemical literature will be assigned on a regular basis. You should complete these assignments in a timely manner as they will form the basis of our in-class discussions. Homework Assignments A portion of your grade is based on homework assignments. All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Late homework will not be accepted.

3 Literature Project This project is intended to help you develop your skills with respect to searching the literature, evaluating sources, synthesizing information, giving oral presentations. For this project, you will research an organometallic reaction of synthetic or industrial importance (one that we will not cover in class), prepare an annotated bibliography of your sources, give an oral presentation on the reaction. Additional details on the project will be given in class. Due dates List of articles chosen Monday, February 4 Annotated bibliography Monday, February 18 with copies of articles Outline of presentation Wednesday, March 13 Draft of PowerPoint slides Monday, April 1 or 8 questions /answers Formal presentation Tuesday, April 9 or 16 Extra Credit Extra credit can be used to increase the final grade in the course by up to 2%. Extra credit can be earned by attending departmental colloquia (7 colloquia = full credit). If you have a work or school conflict that prevents you from attending colloquium, please see me to discuss other extra credit options. All extra credit is due by the last day of class. Attendance Regular attendance at lecture laboratory sections is required expected. Missing more than three classes for any reason will result in a deduction in the final grade (0.5% per absence). Attendance at quizzes, exams laboratory meetings is matory. Make-ups are not permitted unless the absence is due to a significant illness or family emergency that can be documented (such as by notification from the Dean's office). Plagiarism includes, but it not limited to: copying or allowing another student to copy homework assignments or responses on a quiz or an exam; misrepresenting the ideas or words of another as your own (this includes failing to cite a source or closely paraphrasing a cited source).

4 Laboratory The laboratory grade is comprised of four lab write-ups, the ferrocene prelab assignment a lab technique evaluation (based on the rubric below). Brings food, drink, cell phone or other electronic device into lab. Spills are not cleanedup right away. Bench or hood is left in poor condition on multiple occasions. Improper disposal of chemicals on multiple occasions. Frequently fails to store equipment properly at end of lab. Leaves lids off reagents bottles. Misses prelab or is significantly late on multiple occasions. Or, uses lab time poorly. Completes experiments with little attention to technique. Careless or abusive with instruments/ equipment. 2 (fair) Need occasional reminding about safety glasses or clothing/footwear. Does not bring food, drink or personal electronic devices into lab. Bench fume hood are not always left in good condition. Improper disposal of chemicals. May occasionally fail to store equipment properly at end of lab. Lids occasionally left off reagent bottles. Is late to prelab on more than one occasion or does not work efficiently in lab. Basic proficiency at lab techniques. Or, not careful with equipment /or instruments. 3 (good) Consistently wears safety glasses. Wears appropriate clothing footwear. Does not bring food, drink, or personal electronic devices into lab. Keeps a clean, uncluttered work area. Bench fume hood are cleaned at end of lab. Shared space (ie. reagent hood) is clean. Personal shared equipment stored properly at end of lab. Lids kept on reagent bottles. Chemicals are disposed of properly. Arrives on time or has been slightly late on one occasion. Works efficiently in lab. Careful execution of lab techniques. Hles equipment, instruments chemicals with care. 4 (outsting) Consistently wears safety glasses appropriate attire. Does not bring food, drink or personal electronic devices into lab. Never needs to be reminded of policy. Helps others follow safety rules. During lab, work area is clean, organized, without clutter. Bench fume hood are thoroughly cleaned organized at end of lab. Checks shared space to ensure it is clean. Personal shared equipment stored properly. Lids kept on reagent bottles. Chemicals are disposed of properly. Helps to ensure that others are hling chemicals, equipment waste properly. Arrives on time. Works efficiently in lab. Uses downtime effectively (such as to prepare for later parts of the experiment).
