Rules for oxidation numbers: An element that is not in a compound has an oxidation number of zero (0) Group 1 Metals are always 1+ Group 2 Metals are always 2+ Fluorine is always 1- Oxygen is always 2- except when combined with F (OF 2 ) or the peroxide ion (O 2 2- ) J Deutsch
