Scope of work. Make recommendations as to which basic equipment and instruments should exist in each AGeo country. 2. Make an inventory of existing equipment in the AGeo countries and their condition. 3. Identify the lack of basic equipment as per No.. 4. Investigate the compatibility of equipment and instruments in the AGeo countries, with regard to data collection, data transfer, data shearing etc. 5. Evaluate the technical skill in each country for operating existing equipment as well as processing and interpretation of the data.

Scope of work (cont.) 6. Make recommendations on which instruments can be pooled and made available to the AGeo countries. 7. Make recommendations as to where such an equipment pool could be located. 8. Make recommendations on regulatory framework for the equipment pool, its supervision, responsibility of maintenance, rental rates, etc.

Categories of visited laboratories Geothermal laboratory nly geothermal samples analysed Sample preparation according to geothermal needs Analytical methods suitable for geothermal samples Water laboratory Laboratory set up to serve groundwater survey and water utilities Sample preparation not adequate for geothermal samples Some elements necessary for geothermal interpretation not analysesed Petrography laboratory Laboratory specialised to carry out rock analyses Little or no experience in sample preparation and water analyses Laboratory requires major changes and training to serve geothermal needs

Categories of visited laboratories Geothermal laboratory Kenya and Uganda Water laboratories Ethiopia and Djibouti Petrography laboratories Tanzania and Eritrea

Geochemical laboratories Laboratory equipment are fixed, an inseparable part of a laboratory A member country will propose a laboratory as an affiliated AGeo laboratory, providing services to geothermal projects for AGeo countries

Equipment pool structure Distributed (virtual) pool The AGeo central office keeps up to date database on equipment in each country and its availability The AGeo central office keeps up to date list of planned projects The office assigns equipment to projects and advises on laboratory services

Equipment pool and training Each AGeo supported project should be used, as much as possible, for training Most of the equipment needs trained operators and professionals for data processing and interpretation When equipment is assigned to a project, technicians and professionals are also assigned. When a project is going on in an AGeo country, the AGeo training centre and the central office assign trainees from other AGeo country(s) to participate The AGeo training centre might arrange seminars and/or short courses attached to ongoing projects
