MILLS RATIO: RECIPROCAL CONVEXITY AND FUNCTIONAL INEQUALITIES Dedicated to my children Boróka Koppány arxiv:.3267v4 [math.ca] 9 May 22 Abstract. This note contains sufficient conditions for the probability density function of an arbitrary continuous univariate distribution, supported on (, ), such that the corresponding Mills ratio to be reciprocally conve (concave). To illustrate the applications of the main results, the reciprocal conveity (concavity) of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is discussed in details.. Introduction By definition (see [7]) a function f : (, ) R is said to be (strictly) reciprocally conve if f() is (strictly) concave f(/)is (strictly) conveon (, ). Merkle[7] showedthat f is reciprocally conve if only if for all,y > we have (.) f ( 2y +y ) f()+f(y) 2 ( ) +y f 2 f()+yf(y). +y We note here that in fact the third inequality followsfrom the fact that the function f(/) is conve on (, ) if only if f() is conve on (, ). In what follows, similarly as in [7], a function g : (, ) R is said to be (strictly) reciprocally concave if only if g is (strictly) reciprocally conve, i.e. if g() is (strictly) conve g(/) is (strictly) concave on (, ). Observe that if f is differentiable, then f(/) is (strictly) conve (concave) on (, ) if only if 2 f () is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ). As it was shown by Merkle [7], reciprocally conve functions defined on (, ) have a number of interesting properties: they are increasing on (, ) or have a constant value on (, ), they have a continuous derivative on (, ) they generate a sequence of quasi-arithmetic means, with the first one between harmonic arithmetic mean others above the arithmetic mean. Some eamples of reciprocally conve functions related to the Euler gamma function were given in [7]. By definition (see [9]) a function f : (, ) R is said to be completely monotonic, if f has derivatives of all orders satisfies ( ) n f (n) () for all > n {,,...}. Note that strict inequality always holds above unless f is constant. It is known (Bernstein s Theorem) that f is completely monotonic if only if [9, p. 6] f() = e t dν(t), where ν is a nonnegative measure on [, ) such that the integral converges for all >. An important subclass of completely monotonic functions consists of the Stieltjes transforms defined as the class of functions g : (, ) R of the form dν(t) g() = α+ +t, where α ν is a nonnegative measure on [, ) such that the integral converges for all >. Itwaspointedoutin[7]thatifafunctionh : (, ) RisaStieltjestransform,then hisreciprocally conve, i.e. h is reciprocally concave. We note that some known reciprocally concave functions comes from probability theory. For eample, the Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution is a reciprocally concave function. For this let us see some basics. The probability density function ϕ : R (, ), the Key words phrases. Mills ratio, Reciprocally conve (concave) functions, Monotone form of l Hospital s rule, Statistical distributions, Completely monotonic functions, Stieltjes transform.
2 cumulative distribution function Φ : R (,) the reliability function Φ : R (,) of the stard normal law, are defined by ϕ() = e 2 /2, 2π The function m : R (, ), defined by m() = Φ() ϕ() = e Φ() = Φ() = Φ() = 2 /2 ϕ(t)dt e t2 /2 dt = ϕ(t)dt. e t e t2 /2 dt, is known in literature as Mills ratio [8, Sect. 2.26] of the stard normal law, while its reciprocal r = /m, defined by r() = /m() = ϕ()/φ(), is the so-called failure (hazard) rate. For Mills ratio of other distributions, like gamma distribution, we refer to [6] to the references therein. It is well-known that Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution is conve strictly decreasing on R,attheorigintakesonthevaluem() = π/2.moreover,itcanbeshown(see[2])that m ()/m() is strictly increasing 2 m () is strictly decreasing on (, ). With other words, the Mills ratio of the stard normal law is strictly reciprocally concave on (, ). Some other monotonicity properties interesting functional inequalities involving the Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution can be found in [2]. The following complements the above mentioned results. Theorem. Let m be the Mills ratio of the stard normal law. Then the function m( )/ is a Stieltjes transform consequently it is strictly completely monotonic strictly reciprocally concave on (, ). In particular, if,y >, then the following chain of inequalities holds +y 2y m ( ) 2y ym( )+ m( y) +y 2 y ( ) 2 +y m( )+ ym( y) +y m. 2 +y In each of the above inequalities equality holds if only if = y. Proof. For > the Mills of the stard normal distribution can be represented as [5, p. 45] From this we obtain that m() = 2 +t 2ϕ(t)dt = 2 m( ) = 2π 2 +t 2ϕ(t)dt. +s which shows that the function m( )/ is in fact a Stieltjes transform owing to Merkle [7, p. 27] this implies that the function m( )/ is reciprocally conve on (, ), i.e. the function m( )/ is reciprocally concave on (, ). The rest of the proof follows easily from (.). We note that the strictly complete monotonicity of the function m( )/ can be proved also by using the properties of completely monotonic functions. Mills ratio m of the stard normal distribution is in fact a Laplace transform consequently it is strictly completely monotonic (see [2]). On the other h, it is known (see [9]) that if u is strictly completely monotonic v is nonnegative with a strictly completely monotone derivative, then the composite function u v is also strictly completely monotonic. Now, since the function m is strictly completely monotonic on (, ) 2( ) = / is strictly completely monotonic on (, ), we obtain that m( ) is also strictly completely monotonic on e s/2 s ds, (, ). Finally, by using the fact that the product of completely monotonic functions is also completely monotonic, the function m( )/ is indeed strictly completely monotonic on (, ). Now, since the Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution is reciprocally concave a natural question which arises here is the following: under which conditions does the Mills ratio of an arbitrary continuous univariate distribution, having support (, ), will be reciprocally conve (concave)? The goal of this paper is to find some sufficient conditions for the probability density function of an arbitrary continuous univariate distribution, supported on the semi-infinite interval (, ), such that the corresponding Mills
MILLS RATIO: RECIPROCAL CONVEXITY AND FUNCTIONAL INEQUALITIES 3 ratio to be reciprocally conve (concave). The main result of this paper, namely Theorem 2 in section 2, is based on some recent results of the author [3] complement naturally the results from [2, 3]. To illustrate the application of the main result, the Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is discussed in details in section 3. We note that although the reciprocal conveity (concavity) of Mills ratio is interesting in his own right, the conveity of the Mills ratio of continuous distributions has important applications in monopoly theory, especially in static pricing problems. For characterizations of the eistence or uniqueness of global maimizers we refer to [4] to the references therein. Another application can be found in [], where the conveity of Mills ratio is used to show that the price is a sub-martingale. 2. Reciprocal conveity (concavity) of Mills ratio In this section our aim is to find some sufficient conditions for the probability density function such that the corresponding Mills ratio to be reciprocally conve (concave). As in [3] the proof is based on the monotone form of l Hospital s rule [, Lemma 2.2]. Theorem 2. Let f : (, ) (, ) be a probability density function let ω : (, ) R, defined by ω() = f ()/f(), be the logarithmic derivative of f. Let also F : (, ) (,), defined by F() = f(t)dt, be the survival function m : (, ) (, ), defined by m() = F()/f(), be the corresponding Mills ratio. Then the following assertions are true: (a) If f()/ω() as, ω /ω 2 is (strictly) decreasing (increasing) on (, ) the function 3 ω () ω 2 () ω () 2ω() is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ), then Mills ratio m is (strictly) reciprocally conve (concave) on (, ). (b) If f()/( ω()), f()/ω() as, ω /ω 2 is (strictly) decreasing (increasing) on (, ) the function 2 ω () ω()+2 ω 2 () ω () 2ω() is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ), then Mills ratio m is (strictly) reciprocally conve (concave) on (, ). Proof. (a) By definition Mills ratio m is (strictly) reciprocally conve (concave) if m is (strictly) concave (conve) m(/)is(strictly)conve(concave). Itisknown(see[3, Theorem2])thatiff()/ω() tends to zero as tends to infinity the function ω /ω 2 is (strictly) increasing (decreasing), then m is (strictly) conve (concave). Thus, we just need to find conditions for the (strict) conveity (concavity) of the function m(/). This function is (strictly) conve (concave) on (, ) if only if the function 2 m () is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ). On the other h, observe that Mills ratio m satisfies the differential equation m () = ω()m(). Thus, by using the monotone form of l Hospital s rule (see [, Lemma 2.2]) to prove that the function ( ) ( ) F()+f()/ω() lim F()+f()/ω() 2 m () = f()/( 2 ω()) lim f()/(2 ω()) = F()+f()/ω() f()/( 2 ω()) is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ) it is enough to show that ( ) F()+f()/ω() 3 ω () (f()/( 2 ω())) = ω 2 () ω () 2ω() is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ). (b) Observe that according to [7, Lemma 2.2] the function m(/) is (strictly) conve (concave) if only if m() is (strictly) conve (concave) on (, ). Now, by using the monotone form of
4 l Hospital s rule (see [, Lemma 2.2]) the function (m()) = m() ω()m() = F() f()/( ω()) f()/( ω()) ( ) ( ) F() f()/( ω()) lim F() f()/( ω()) = (f()/( ω())) lim (f()/( ω())) is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ) if the function ( ) F() f()/( ω()) (f()/( ω())) = 2 ω () ω()+2 ω 2 () ω () 2ω() is (strictly) increasing (decreasing) on (, ). Notice that we used the fact that if f()/( ω()) as, then f()/( ω()) as. We note here that the reciprocal concavity of the Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution can be verified easily by using part (a) or part (b) of Theorem 2. More precisely, in the case of the stard normal distribution we have ω() =, ω () =. Consequently ϕ()/ω() = ϕ()/ as, the function ω ()/ω 2 () = / 2 is strictly increasing 3 ω () ω 2 () ω () 2ω() = is strictly decreasing on (, ). This is turn implies that by using part (a) of Theorem 2 the Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution is strictly reciprocally concave on (, ). Similarly, since ϕ()/( + 2 ), ϕ()/( + 2 ), ϕ()/ as, the function ω ()/ω 2 () = / 2 is strictly increasing 2 ω () ω()+2 ω 2 () ω () 2ω() = is strictly decreasing on (, ), part (b) of Theorem 2 also implies that the Mills ratio of the stard normal distribution is strictly reciprocally concave on (, ). Thus, Theorem 2 in fact generalizes some of the main results of [2]. 3. Reciprocal conveity (concavity) of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution The gamma distribution has support (, ), probability density function, cumulative distribution function survival function as follows f() = f(;α) = α e, F() = F(;α) = γ(α,) F() = F(;α) = Γ(α,) = = t α e t dt t α e t dt, where Γ is the Euler gamma function, γ(, ) Γ(, ) denote the lower upper incomplete gamma functions, α > is the shape parameter. As we can see below, the Mills ratio of the gamma distribution m : (, ) (, ), defined by m() = m(;α) = Γ(α,) α e, is reciprocally conve on (, ) for all < α reciprocally concave on (, ) for all α 2. In [3] it was proved that if α, then the Mills ratio m is decreasing log-conve, consequently conve on (, ). We note that the conveity of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution actually can be verified directly (see []), since ( ) α t m() = e t dt = u α e ( u) du
MILLS RATIO: RECIPROCAL CONVEXITY AND FUNCTIONAL INEQUALITIES 5 m () = = ( (α )u α 2 )( ( u)e ( u)) du u α e ( u) du+ u α ( u)e ( u) du, where the last equality follows from integration by parts. From this we clearly have that m () = (α )( u) 2 u α 2 e ( u) du consequentlymisconveon(, )ifα isconcaveon(, )if < α.theconcavityofthe function m can be verified also by using [3, Theorem 2]. Namely, if let ω() = f ()/f() = (α )/, thenf()/ω() tendstozeroastendstoinfinitythefunction ω ()/ω 2 () = ( α)/(α ) 2 is decreasing on (, ) for all < α. Consequently in view of [3, Theorem 2] m is indeed concave on (, ) for all < α. Now let us focus on the reciprocal conveity (concavity) of the Mills ratio of gamma distribution. Since 3 ω () ω 2 () ω () 2ω() = ( α) 2 (α ) α, we obtain that ( 3 ω ) () ω 2 () ω = 2(α )(α 2)(2 +( α)) () 2ω() ((α ) α) 2. This last epression is clearly positive if < α >, thus, by using part (a) of Theorem 2 we conclude that Mills ratio m is reciprocally conve on (, ) for all < α. Similarly, since we get 2 ω () ω()+2 ω 2 () ω () 2ω() = 2 +2(2 α) 2 +2(2 α)+(α )(α 2), ( 2 ω () ω()+2 ) = 2(α )(α 2)(+2 α) ω 2 () ω () 2ω() ( 2 +2(2 α)+(α )(α 2)) 2 this is negative if α 2 >. Consequently, by using part (b) of Theorem 2 we get that the Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is indeed reciprocally concave for α 2. Here we used that if tends to, then the epressions f()/ω() f()/( ω()) tend to. Finally, we note that the conveity (concavity) of m(/) can be verified alsoby using the integral representation of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution. More precisely, if we rewrite m() as ( m() = + u α e ) u du, then 2 m () = ( (α ) + u α 2ue ) u du ( [ 2 m ()] = (α )(α 2) + u ) α 3 u 2 2e u du. This shows that 2 m () is decreasing on (, ) if α 2 increasing on (, ) if < α or α 2. Summarizing, the Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is reciprocally conve on (, ) if < α reciprocally concave on (, ) if α 2. When α > 2 the functions m() m(/) are conve on (, ), thus in this case m is nor reciprocally conve neither reciprocally concave on its support. Acknowledgments.
