SHARP POWER MEANS BOUNDS FOR NEUMAN-SÁNDOR MEAN arxiv: v [math.ca] 4 Aug 0 ZHEN-HANG YANG Abstract. For a,b > 0 with a b, let N a,b) denote the Neuman-Sándor mean defined by N a,b) = arcsinh a+b and A r a,b) denote the r-order power mean. We present the sharp power means bounds for the Neuman-Sándor mean: where p = A p a,b) < N a,b) A p a,b), lnln3+ ) and p = 4/3 are the best constants.. Introduction Throughout the paper, we assume that a,b > 0 with a b. The classical power mean of order r of the positive real numbers a and b is defined by a r +b r ) /r A r = A r a,b) = if r 0 and A 0 = A 0 a,b) = ab. It is well-known that the function r A r a,b) is continuous and strictly increasing on R see []). As special cases, the arithmetic mean, geometric mean and quadratic mean are A = Aa,b) = A a,b), G = Ga,b) = A 0 a,b) and Q = Qa,b) = A a,b), respectively. The logarithmic mean and identrice exponential) mean are defined as L = La,b) = lna lnb, I = Ia,b) = e a a /b b) /), respectively. In 993, Seiffert [9] introduced his first mean as.) P = P a,b) = which can be written also in the equivalent form 4arctan a/b π,.) P = P a,b) = arcsin, a+b Date: July 5, Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 6E60. Key words and phrases. Neuman-Sandor mean, inequality. This paper is in final form and no version of it will be submitted for publication elsewhere.
ZHEN-HANG YANG see e.g. [8]. In 995, Seiffert [0] defined his second mean as T = T a,b) = arctan. a+b Recently, Neuman and Sándor have defined in [] a new mean.3) N = N a,b) = arcsinh a+b = ln + a +b ) a+b All these means are symmetric and homogeneous, and the power mean is relatively simple. Hence ones are interested in evaluating these means by power means A p. Ostle and Terwilliger [3] and Karamata [7] first proved that.4) G < L < A. This result, or a part of it, has been rediscovered and reproved many times see e. g., [0], [3], [4], [5]). In 974 Lin [9] obtained an important refinement of the above inequalities:.5) G < L < A /3, and proved that the number /3 cannot be replaced by a smaller one. For the identric mean I, Stolarsky [] first proved that.6) G < I < A also see [3], [4]). In 988, Alzer [] showed that.7) e A < I < A also see [6]). The following double inequality.8) A / < I < 4e A / is due to Neuman and Sándor []. Stolarsky [] and Pittenger [4] established the sharp lower and upper bounds for I in terms of power means.9) A /3 < I < A, respectively. By using the well properties of homogeneous functions, Yang also proved.7),.8) in [5] and.0) A /3 < I < e A /3 in [6]. For the first Seiffert mean P, the author [9] gave a estimate by A.) π A < P < A. Subsequently, Jagers [6] proved that.) A / < P < A /3. By using Pfaff s algorithm Sádor in [7] reproved the first inequality in.), while Hästo [4] gave a companion one of the second one in.):.3) π A /3 < P < A /3,
SHARP BOUNDS FOR NEUMAN-SÁNDOR MEAN 3 Two year later, Hästo [5] obtained further a sharp lower bound for P:.4) P > A lnπ. In 995, Seiffert [0] showed that.5) A < T < A. Very recently, Yang [7] present the sharp bounds for the second Seiffert mean in terms of power means:.6) A logπ/ < T A 5/3. Moreover, he obtained that.7).8) αa 5/3 < T < A 5/3, A logπ/ < T < βa logπ/, where α = 8/5 π = and β = are the best possible constants. Concerning the Neuman-Sándor mean, the author [] first established.9) G < L < P < A < N < T < A and π.0) P > A > arcsinh)n > π T. Lately,ConstinandToader[3, Theorem]haveshownthatA 3/ canbeputbetween N and T, that is,.) N < A 3/ < T, and they obtained the following nice chain of inequalities for certain means:.) G < L < A / < P < A < N < A 3/ < T < A. Our aim is to prove that.3) A ln lnln3+ ) < N < A 4/3, where ln lnln3+ ) and 4/3 are the best possible constants. Thus, we obtain a more nice chain of inequalities for bivariate means: A 0 < L < A /3 < A lnπ < P < A /3 < I < A < A lnln3+ ) < N < A 4/3 < A logπ/ < T < A 5/3 Our main results are the following Theorem. For a,b > 0 with a b, the inequality N < A p holds if and only if p 4/3. Moreover, we have.4) α A 4/3 < N < β A 4/3, where α = 4 ln +) = and β = are the best possible constants. Theorem. For a,b > 0 with a b, the inequality N > A p holds if and only if p p 0 =.8. Moreover, we have lnln3+ ).5) α A p0 < N < β A p0, where α = and β.038 are the best possible constants.
4 ZHEN-HANG YANG. Lemmas In order to prove our main results, we need the following lemmas. Lemma. Let F p be the function defined on 0,) by.) F p x) = ln N,x) A p,x) = ln Then we have.) F p x) lim x x ).3) = 4 3p 4), F p 0 + ) = lim x 0 +F px) = where F 0 x) := lim p 0 F p x). x ln x + x +) x+ Proof. Using power series expansion we have F p x) = p ln x p + ). { p lnln 3+ ) if p > 0, if p 0, x ) 3), 4 3p 4)x ) +O which yields.). Direct limit calculation leads to.3), which proves the lemma. Lemma. Let F p be the function defined on 0,) by.). Then F p is strictly increasing on 0,) if and only if p 4/3 and decreasing on 0,) if and only if p. Proof. Differentiation yields.4) F px) = xp + x p + where.5) f p x) = ln x + x +) x+ Differentiating f p x) and simplifying lead to x )ln x + x +) x+ f p x), x x+) x p + x +x p +.6) f p x) = x)x p x + ) 3 x+) x+x p ) gx), where.7) gx) = x p+ +x p+ +x p x p x 3 p x 4 p +p )x 4 x 3 +x p+ ). i) We now prove that F p is strictly increasing on 0,) if and only if p 4/3. From.4) it is seen that sgnf px) = sgn f p x) for x 0,), so it suffices to prove that f p x) > 0 for x 0,) if and only if p 4/3. Necessity. Iff p x) > 0forx 0,)thentheremustbelim x x) 3 f p x) 0. Application of L Hospital rule leads to lim x x + x f p x) ln +) x) 3 = lim x+ x x x+) x p + x + x p + x) 3 = 8 p 4 ), 3
SHARP BOUNDS FOR NEUMAN-SÁNDOR MEAN 5 and so we have p 4/3. Sufficiency. We now prove f p x) > 0 for x 0,) if p 4/3. Since the Lehmer mean of order r of the positive real numbers a and b defined as.8) L r = L r a,b) = ar+ +b r+ a r +b r see [8]) is increasing in its parameter on R, it is enough to show that f p x) > 0 for x 0,) when p = 4/3. In this case, we have and therefore gx) = x x x4 x 3 +x 4 3 x 5 3 +x 7 3 x 8 3 +x 0 3 3, 3g x 3) = x +3x 0 3x 9 6x 8 +3x 7 3x 5 +6x 4 +3x 3 3x. Factoring yields that for x 0,) 3g x 3) = x ) 3 x+) x 8 +x 7 +7x 6 +9x 5 +9x 4 +9x 3 +7x +x+ ) < 0. It follows from.6) that f px) < 0, that is, the function f p is decreasing on 0,). Hence for x 0,) we have f p x) > f p ) = 0, which proves the sufficiency. ii) We next prove that F p is strictly decreasing on 0,) if and only if p. Similarly, it suffices to show that f p x) < 0 for x 0,) if and only if p. Necessity. If f p x) < 0 for x 0,) then we have lim x 0 + f p x) = ln ) + if p > ln ) + if p = ln ) if p < which yields p. Sufficiency. We prove f p x) < 0 for x 0,) if p. As mentioned previous, the function p L p,x) is increasing on R, it suffices to demonstrate f p x) < 0 forx 0,)whenp =. Inthiscase,wehavegx) = x x 3 > 0,thenf p x) > 0, and then for x 0,) we have f p x) < f p ) = 0, which proves the sufficiency and the proof of this lemma is finished. 0, Lemma 3. Let the function g be defined on 0,) by.7). Then there is a unique a x 0 0,) such that gx) < 0 for x 0,x 0 ) and gx) > 0 for x x 0,) if p = p 0 = lnln3+ ) /00,4/3). Proof. We prove desired result stepwise. Step : We have g 4) x) > 0 for x 0,) when p,4/3). Differentiations yield.9) g x) = p+)x p+ +p+)x p +px p +p )x p +p 3)x p +p 4)x 3 p +4p )x 3 3x +,.0) g x) = p+)p+)x p +pp+)x p +pp )x p p )p )x p p )p 3)x p p 3)p 4)x p +p )x 6x,
6 ZHEN-HANG YANG.)g x) = pp+)p+)x p +pp )p+)x p +pp )p )x p 3 +pp )p )x p +p )p )p 3)x p +p )p 3)p 4)x p +4p )x 6,.) where g 4) x) p = pp+)p+)x p +pp+)p )x p 3 +pp )p 3)x p 4 pp+)p )x p pp )p 3)x p p )p 3)p 4)x p +4 : = I +I +I 3 +I 4, I = pp+)p+)x p > 0, I I 3 = pp+)p )x p 3 +pp )p 3)x p 4 = p p)x p 4 3 p) p+)x) > p p)x p 3 3 p) p+)) = p p)x p 3 5 3p) > 0, = pp+)p )x p pp )p 3)x p = p p)x p p+) 3 p)x) > p p)x p p+) 3 p)) = p p)x p p ) > 0, I 4 = p)3 p)4 p)x p +4 > 0 Hence, g 4) x) > 0 for x 0,) when p,4/3). Step : There is unique x 3 0,) such that g x) < 0 for x 0,x 3 ) and g x) > 0 for x x 3,) when p /00,4/3). Since g 4) x) > 0 for x 0,) when p,4/3), to prove this step, it suffices to verify that g 0 + ) < 0 and g ) > 0. Simple computation yields sgng 0 +) = sgnpp )p )) < 0, where the last inequality holds is due to with g ) = 8p 3 30p +94p 84 := hp) > 0, h p) = 4p 60p+94 = 3 4p 5) + 3 > 0 h ) = 7337 ) > 0 and h = > 0. Step 3: There is a unique x 0,x 3 ) such that g x) > 0 for x 0,x ) and g x) < 0 for x x,) when p /00,4/3). By Step with sgng 0 +) = sgn p )p )) > 0, g ) = 3p 4) < 0,
SHARP BOUNDS FOR NEUMAN-SÁNDOR MEAN 7 we see that g x) < g ) < 0 for x x 3,) but g 0 + ) > 0, which completes this step. Step 4: There are two x 0,x ),x x,) such that g x) < 0 for x 0,x ) x,) and g x) > 0 for x x,x ) when p = p 0 = 00, 3) 4. Since p = p 0 = lnln3+ ) lnln3+ ) 00, 3) 4, according to Step 3 and note that g 0 +) = sgnp ) < 0, g ) = 43p 4) < 0, in order to prove this step, it is enough to verify that g x ) > 0. In fact, if g x ) < 0 then g x) < g x ) < 0 for x 0,x ) and g x) < g x ) < 0 for x x,), and then g x) < 0 for x 0,). It follows that gx) > g) = 0, which in combination.6) yields f p x) > 0. Therefore, f px) < f p ) = 0, which implies from.4) that F px) < 0. Then for x 0,) 0 = F p 0 + ) > F p x) > F p ) = 0 if p = p 0 = lnln3+ ) 00, 3) 4, which is clearly a contradiction. Hence there must be g x ) > 0, which completes the Step 4. Step 5: There is a unique a x 0 x,x ) such that gx) < 0 for x 0,x 0 ) and gx) > 0 for x x 0,) if p = p 0 = lnln3+ ) /00,4/3). From Step 5 and notice that g 0 +) = p < 0, g ) = 0, we have the following variance table of gx): where Thus the step follows. x 0 + 0,x ) x x,x ) x x,) g x) gx) ց ր + ց 0 gx ) < g 0 +) = p < 0 and gx ) > g) = 0. Lemma 4. Let the function f p be defined on 0,) by.5), where p = p 0 = lnln3+ ). Then there is a unique x 0 0,x 0 ) to satisfy f p x 0 ) = 0 such that f p x) > 0 for x 0, x 0 ) and f p x) < 0 for x x 0,). Proof. Due to.6), it is deduced that f p is decreasing on 0,x 0 ) and increasing on x 0,), then f p x) < f p ) = 0 for x x 0,) but f p 0 + ) = ln ) + > 0. This indicates that there is a unique x 0 0,x 0 ) to satisfy f p x 0 ) = 0 such that f p x) > 0 for x 0, x 0 ) and f p x) < 0 for x x 0,). 3. Proofs of Main Results Based on the lemmas in the above section, we can easily proved our main results. Proof of Theorem. By symmetry, we assume that a > b > 0. Then inequality N < A p is equivalent to 3.) lnn,x) lna p,x) = F p x) < 0,
8 ZHEN-HANG YANG where x = b/a 0,). Now we prove the inequality 3.) holds for all x 0,) if and only if p 4/3. Necessity. If inequality 3.) holds, then by Lemma we have { Fpx) limx = x ) 4 3p 4) 0, lim x 0 + F p x) = p lnln 3+ ) 0 if p > 0, which yields p 4/3. Sufficiency. Suppose that p 4/3. It follows from Lemma that F p x) < F p ) = 0 for x 0,), which proves the sufficiency. Using the monotonicity of the function x F 4/3 x) on 0,), we have ln 4 ln +) = F 4/3 0 + ) < F 54/3 x) < F 4/3 ) = 0, which implies.5). Thus the proof of Theorem is finished. Proof of Theorem. Clearly, the inequality N > A p is equivalent to 3.) lnn,x) lna p,x) = F p x) > 0, wherex = b/a 0,). Nowweshowthattheinequality3.)holdsforallx 0,) if and only if p lnln3+ ). ln Necessity. The condition p is necessary. Indeed, if inequality lnln3+ ) 3.) holds, then we have { Fpx) limx = x ) 4 3p 4) 0, lim x 0 + F p x) = p lnln 3+ ) 0 if p > 0 or { lim Fpx) x = x ) 4 3p 4) 0, lim x 0 + F p x) = if p 0. Solving the above inequalities leads to p Sufficiency. The condition p ln lnln3+ ) lnln3+ ). is also sufficient. Since the function r A r,x) is increasing, so the function p F p x) is decreasing, thus it is suffices to show that F p x) > 0 for all x 0,) if p = p 0 = lnln3+ ). Lemma 4 reveals that for p = p 0 there is a unique x 0 to satisfy 3.3) f p0 x) = ln x + x +) x+ x x+) x p0 + x +x p0 + = 0 such that the function x F p x) is strictly increasing on 0, x 0 ) and strictly decreasing on x 0,). It is acquired that for p 0 = lnln3+ ) which leads to 0 = F p0 0 + ) < F p0 x) F p0 x 0 ) 0 = F p0 ) < F p0 x 3 ) F p0 x 0 ), A p0,x) < N,x) < expf p x 0 ))A p0,x).
SHARP BOUNDS FOR NEUMAN-SÁNDOR MEAN 9 Solving the equation 3.3) by mathematical computation software we find that x , ), and then β = expf p x 0 ).038, which proves the sufficiency and inequalities.5). 4. Corollaries From the proof of Lemma, it is seen that f p x) > 0 for x 0,) if and only if p 4/3, which implies that the inequality x N,x) = > x+ x +x p + x p + ln x + x +) x+ holds if and only p 4/3. In a similar way, the inequality N,x) < x+ x +x p + x p + is valid if and only if p. The results can be restated as a corollary. Corollary. The inequalities 4.) AA L p < N < AA L q holds if and only if p 4/3 and q, where L r is the Lehmer mean defined by.8). Using the monotonicity of the function defined on 0,) by F p x) = ln N,x) A p,x) given in Lemma, we can obtain a Fan Ky type inequality but omit the further details of the proof. Corollary. Let a,a,b,b > 0 with a /b < a /b <. Then the following Fan Ky type inequality N a,b ) N a,b ) < A pa,b ) A p a,b ) holds if p 4/3. It is reversed if p. References [] H. Alzer, Aufgabe 987, Elem.
