We prove some monotonicity properties of functions involving gamma and q-gamma functions. 1. Introduction The q-gamma function is defined for positive real numbers x and q / 1by Γ q x 1 q 1 x 1 q n 1, <q<1, 1 qn x n Γ q x q 1 1 x q 1/ x x 1 1 q n 1, q > 1. 1 q n x n 1.1 We note here according to 1 that the limit of Γ q x as q 1 gives back the well-known Euler s gamma function: lim q 1 Γ q x Γ x t x t dt e t. 1. Note also that from the definition we have for positive x and <q<1, Γ 1/q x q x 1 1 x/ Γ q x, 1.3

ISRN Mathematical Analysis we see that lim q 1 Γ q x Γ x. For historical remarks on gamma and q-gamma functions, we refer the reader to 1 3. There exists an extensive and rich literature on inequalities for the gamma and q- gamma functions. For some developments in this area, we refer the reader to the articles in 7 and the references therein. Many of these inequalities follow from the monotonicity properties of functions which are closely related to Γ resp., Γ q and its logarithmic derivative ψ resp. ψ q. Here we recall that a function f x is said to be completely monotonic on a, b if it has derivatives of all orders and 1 k f k x, x a, b, k andf x is said to be strictly completely monotonic on a, b if 1 k f k x >, x a, b, k. Lemma.3 below asserts that f x e h x is completely monotonic on an interval if h is. Following 8, we call such functions f x logarithmically completely monotonic. For similar notions of logarithmically completely monotonic functions and the history of the notions, we refer the reader to the articles in 9 1. We note here that lim q 1 ψ q x ψ x see 13 and that ψ and ψ q are completely monotonic functions on, see 5, 14. Thus, one expects to deduce results on gamma and q-gamma functions from properties of logarithmically completely monotonic functions, by applying them to functions related to ψ or ψ q. It is our goal in this paper to obtain some results on gamma and q-gamma functions via this approach. As an example, we recall the following result of Bustoz and Ismail the case q 1 as well as Ismail and Muldoon. Theorem 1.1 see 15, Theorem 3, 4, Theorem.5. Let a 1 b>a, α max a, c and for q> and q / 1, define 1 q x c a b Γ q x b g q x; a, b, c, x > α q Γ q x a For q 1, letg 1 x; a, b, c lim q 1 g q x; a, b, c. Theng q x; a, b, c is logarithmically completely monotonic on α, if c a b 1 / and 1/g q x; a, b, c is logarithmically completely monotonic on α, if c a. It follows immediately from the above theorem that for <q<1and<s<1, one has 4 for x>: 1 q x s/ 1 q 1 s < Γ q x 1 Γ q x s < 1 q x s 1 s q Alzer later 3 determined the best values u q, s,v q, s such that the inequalities 1 q x u q,s 1 q 1 s < Γ q x 1 Γ q x s < 1 q x v q,s 1 s q

ISRN Mathematical Analysis 3 hold for q>, <s<1,x >tobe ln q u q, s s q / 1 s 1 q, <q<1, ln q s, q > 1, v q, s ln 1 1 q Γ 1/ s 1 q s. ln q 1.7 Motivated by the above results, we will show in Section 3 that the function g q x; s, 1,u q, s as defined in Theorem 1.1 is logarithmically completely monotonic on, for <q<1. This will enable us to deduce the left-hand side inequality of Alzer s result above for <q<1. The derivatives of ψ x are known as polygamma functions and in Section 4 we will prove some inequalities involving the polygamma functions.. Lemmas The following lemma lists some facts about ψ x and ψ q x. These can be found, for example, in 3, equation.7 and 5, equations Lemma.1. For x>, ψ q x ln 1 q q nx ln q, <q<1, 1 qn.1 1 n 1 ψ n x n 1 e xt t n 1 e dt n! t k 1, n 1,. n 1 x k ψ n x 1 ψ n x 1 n n!, n,.3 xn 1 ψ x ln x 1 x 1 1 1x O, x,.4 x 3 1 n 1 ψ n n 1! x x n n! 1 O, n 1, x..5 xn 1 x n The set of all the completely monotonic functions on an interval is equipped with a ring structure with the usual addition and multiplication of functions. The next two simple lemmas can also be used to construct new logarithmically completely monotonic functions; part of Lemma. is contained in 4, Lemma 1.3. Lemma.. If f x is completely monotonic on some interval a, b, thensoisf x f x c on a, b a c, b c for any c>. Consequently, if f x is logarithmically completely monotonic on some interval a, b,thensoisf x /f x c on a, b a c, b c for any c>. Lemma.3 see 15, Lemma.1. If f x is completely monotonic on an interval, then exp f x is also completely monotonic on the same interval.

4 ISRN Mathematical Analysis Lemma.4. Let a i and b i i 1,...,n be real numbers such that <a 1 a n, <b 1 b n, and k i 1 a i k i 1 b i for k 1,...,n. If the function f x is decreasing and convex on,, then n f b i i 1 n f a i. i 1.6 If n i 1 a i n i 1 b i, then one only needs f x to be convex for the above inequality to hold. The above lemma, except the last part, is a special case of Lemma in. This lemma follows from the theory of majorization, for example, see the discussions in 16. Lemma.5 Hadamard s inequality. Let f x be a convex function on a, b,then a b 1 f b a b a f x dx f a f b..7 Lemma.6. For real numbers <s,q<1 and any integer n 1, q s n q 1 s 1 q q ns q n 1 s 1 q n..8 Proof. We can recast the above inequality as E 1,s 1; q, 1 E n, n s 1 ; q, 1,.9 where for positive numbers x, y and real numbers r, s with rs r s x y /, we define E r, s; x, y r s ys x s 1/ s r y r x r..1 The assertion of the lemma now follows from the fact that E r, s; x, y is increasing in both x and y and in both r and s see, e.g., Theorem 1 in 17 for a proof of this. Lemma.7. Let m>n 1 be two integers, then for any fixed constant <c<1, the function a t; m, n, c t m n t n c 1 t m.11 has exactly one root when t 1. Proof. We have a t; m, n, c t m 1 m n t n nt n m cm..1 The function t m n t n nt n m cm is clearly decreasing when t 1. By considering the cases t 1andt we conclude that a t; m, n, c has exactly one root when

ISRN Mathematical Analysis 5 t 1. It follows from this and Cauchy s mean value theorem that a t; m, n, c has at most two roots when t 1. This combined with the observation that a 1; m, n, c > and lim t a t; m, n, c < yields the desired conclusion. Lemma.8. For t s, one has Proof. We write s 1 e s t s 1 e t..13 t s 1 e t f x x 1 e x.14 and we observe that f t e t t e t/ e t/,.15 f t t 1 e t where the last inequality follows from e t/ e t/ t, t..16 The above inequality follows from the fact that the derivative of sinh t t is cosh t 1 > for t> and that sinh. We now deduce that f t s f t s f t f t,.17 for t s. This implies that the function t ln f t s ln f t is increasing for t>s.thus we get ln f s ln f t s ln f t lim t s ln f s ln f t s ln f t,.18 which is the desired result. 3. Main Results Theorem 3.1. Let a i and b i i 1,...,n be real numbers such that a 1 a n, b 1 b n, and k i 1 a i k i 1 b i for k 1,...,n.Iff x is completely monotonic on,,then is logarithmically completely monotonic on,. n exp f x ai f x b i 3.1 i 1

6 ISRN Mathematical Analysis Proof. It suffices to show that n f x a i f x b i 3. i 1 is completely monotonic on, or for k 1, 1 k n f k x a i 1 k n f k x b i. i 1 i By Lemma.4, itsuffices to show that 1 k f k x is decreasing and convex on, or equivalently, 1 k f k 1 x and 1 k f k x fork 1. The last two inequalities hold since we assume that f x is completely monotonic on,. This completes the proof. As a direct consequence of Theorem 3.1, we now generalize a result of Alzer, Theorem 1. Corollary 3.. Let a i and b i i 1,...,n be real numbers such that a 1 a n, b 1 b n, and k i 1 a i k i 1 b i for k 1,...,n. Then, x n Γ q x a i i 1 Γ q x b i 3.4 is logarithmically completely monotonic on,. Proof. Apply Theorem 3.1 to f x ln Γ q x and note that f x ψ q x is completely monotonic on, and this completes the proof. Theorem 3.3. Let f x be completely monotonic on,, then for s 1, the functions x exp f x 1 f x s 1 s f x exp f x 1 f x s x 1 s, 1 s f x 1 f x s 3.5 are logarithmically completely monotonic on,. Proof. We may assume s<1. We will prove the first assertion and the second one can be shown similarly. It suffices to show that f x 1 f x s 1 s f x 1 s 3.6

ISRN Mathematical Analysis 7 is completely monotonic on, or for k 1, 1 x 1 1 k 1 f k 1 t dt 1 k 1 f k 1 1 s x s x 1 s. 3.7 The last inequality holds by Lemma.5 and our assumption that f x is completely monotonic on,. This completes the proof. Corollary 3.4. For s 1, the functions x Γ q x s 1 Γ q x 1 exp s ψ q x Γ q x 1 Γ q x s exp x 1 s, 1 s ψq x 1 ψ q x s 3.8 are logarithmically completely monotonic on,. Proof. Apply Theorem 3.3 to f x ln Γ q x and note that f x ψ q x is completely monotonic on, and this completes the proof. By applying Lemma.5 to f x ψ q x, we obtain the following theorem. Theorem 3.5. For positive x and s 1, 1 s exp ψq x 1 ψ q x s Γ q x 1 1 Γ q x s exp s ψ q x 1 s. 3.9 The upper bound in Theorem 3.5 is due to Ismail and Muldoon 4. Our proof here is similar to that of Corollary 3 in 18. Our next result refines the left-hand side inequality of 1.6 for <q<1. Theorem 3.6. Let <s<1 and <q<1. Letu q, s be defined by 1.7 and let the function g q x; s, 1,u q, s be defined as in Theorem 1.1.Theng q x; s, 1,u q, s is logarithmically completely monotonic on,. Proof. Define 1 q x u q,s h q x ln g q x; s, 1,u q, s ln Γq x 1 ln Γ q x s 1 s ln. 1 q 3.1 It suffices to show that h q x is completely monotonic on,. We have qx u q,s h q x ψ q x 1 ψ q x s 1 s ln q qx u q,s

8 ISRN Mathematical Analysis Using the expression.1, we can rewrite h q x as h q nx q n q ns q x u q,s q x ln q 1 q n 1 s, <q< q x u q,s n 1 Expanding 1 q x u q,s 1, we may further rewrite h q x as where h q nx q x ln q 1 q n w q,n s, <q<1, 3.13 n 1 w q,n c q n q ns 1 s q nu q,s 1 q n In order for h q x to be completely monotonic on,, itsuffices to show w q,n s for <s<1. This is just Lemma.6 and this completes the proof. Theorem 3.6 implies that g q x; s, 1,u q, s > lim x g q x; s, 1,u q, s 1, where the limit can be easily evaluated using 1.1 and we recover the left-hand side inequality of 1.6 for <q<1. For α, let f α x ln Γ x x 1 ln x x 1 1 ψ x α Alzer 19, Theorem 1 showed that for fixed <s<1, the function exp f α x s f α x 1 is strictly completely monotonic on, if and only if α 1/ and the function exp f α x s f α x 1 is strictly completely monotonic on, if and only if α. In view of Lemmas. and.3, Alzer s result would follow if one can show that f α x is strictly completely monotonic on, if and only if α 1/ andthat f α x is strictly completely monotonic on, if and only if α. We now establish the above assertions in the following. Proposition 3.7. For α, letf α x be defined as in Thenf α x is strictly completely monotonic on, if and only if α 1/ and f α x is strictly completely monotonic on, if and only if α. Proof. As ψ x is completely monotonic on,, we may just focus on the case α 1/or. We have f α x ψ x ln x 1 x 1 1 ψ x α, f α x ψ x 1 x 1 x 1 1 ψ 3 x α Using the asymptotic expressions.4 and.5, we see that lim x f n α x for any integer n. It is then easy to see that the if part of the assertions of the proposition will

ISRN Mathematical Analysis 9 follow if we can show that f x 1 f x is strictly completely monotonic on, 1/ 1/ and f x f x 1 is completely monotonic on,.using.3, itiseasytoseethat f 1/ x 1 f 1/ x x x 1/8 4x 1 x x 1/ x x 1/ 4 x 1. 8x 3.17 It is easy to see from this and the ring structure of completely monotonic functions on, that f 1/ x 1 f x is strictly completely monotonic on,. Similarly, one shows that 1/ f x f x 1 is completely monotonic on,. To prove the only if part of the assertions of the proposition, we note that f α x 1 f α x 4α x3 6α 1 x 4α 3 x α 4 x 1 x x α 4, 3.18 from which we see easily by considering the case x that f α x fails to be increasing if α<1/. Similarly, by considering the case x that f α x fails to be decreasing if α> and this completes the proof. 4. Some Inequalities Involving Polygamma Functions For integers p m n q and any real number c, we define F p,m,n,q x; c 1 m n ψ m x ψ n x c 1 p q ψ p x ψ q x. 4.1 Here we set ψ x 1 for convenience. For n, a result of Alzer and Wells, Theorem.1 asserts that the function F n 1,n,n,n 1 x; c is completely monotonic on, if and only if c n 1 /n and F n 1,n,n,n 1 x; c is completely monotonic on, if and only if c n/ n 1. We denote c p,m,n,q m 1! n 1! m 1! n 1!, q 1; c p,m,n,, p 1! q 1! p 1! d p,m,n,q m!n! p!q!. 4. and note that <c p,m,n,q,d p,m,n,q < 1 when p q m n, p > m. We now extend the result of Alzer and Wells to the following. Theorem 4.1. Let p > m n > q be integers satisfying m n p q. The function F p,m,n,q x; c p,m,n,q is completely monotonic on,. The function F p,m,n,q x; d p,m,n,q is also completely monotonic on, when q>.

1 ISRN Mathematical Analysis Proof. We first prove the assertion for F p,m,n,q x; c p,m,n,q with q 1. The proof here uses the method in. Using the integral representation. for 1 n 1 ψ n x and using for the Laplace convolution, we get F p,m,n,q x; cp,m,n,q e xt g t dt, 4.3 where t m g t 1 e t n t 1 e c t p t p,m,n,q 1 e t q t 1 e t t t s m s n c p,m,n,q t s p s q h t s h s ds, 4.4 with h s e s It suffices to show that g t. By change of variables s ts we can recast it as g t t m n s m s n c p,m,n,q 1 s p s q h t 1 s h ts ds. 4.6 We now break the above integral into two integrals, one from to 1/ and the other from 1/ to 1. We make a further change of variable s 1 s / for the first one and s 1 s / for the second one. We now combine them to get t m n 1 1 g t t 1 s h 1 s a h 1 s ; p q, n q, c p,m,n,q t 1 s ds, 1 s q 1 s p q 4.7 where the function a t; m, n, c is defined as in Lemma.7. Notethat 1 s / 1 s 1for s<1, hence by Lemma.7, there is a unique number <s < 1 such that 1 s a ; p q, n q, c p,m,n,q. 1 s 4.8 We further note it is shown in the proof of, Lemma. that the function s 1 s t 1 s t 1 s h h 4.9

ISRN Mathematical Analysis 11 is a decreasing function on, 1 so that for s 1, 1 s a 1 s ; p q, n q, c p,m,n,q 1 s a 1 s ; p q, n q, c p,m,n,q t 1 s t 1 s h h 1 s q t 1 s 1 s p q h h 1 s q 1 1 s p q 1 s. t 1 s 4.1 Hence t m n 1 t 1 g t 1 s s t 1 s h h 1 1 s a 1 s ; p q, n q, c p,m,n,q 1 s q 1 1 s p q ds Note that the integral above is by reversing the process above on changing variables m n s m 1 s n 1 c p,m,n,q 1 s p 1 s q 1 ds, 4.1 where the last step follows from the well-known beta function identity B x, y 1 t x 1 1 t y 1 dt Γ x Γ y Γ, x,y >, 4.13 x y and the well-known fact Γ n n 1! forn 1. Now we prove the assertion for F p,m,n, x; c p,m,n,. In this case p m n and we note that c m n,m,n, B m, n 1 s m 1 1 s n 1 ds, 4.14 and we use this to write c m n,m,n, t m n t t 1 e s m 1 t s n 1 t 1 e t ds. 4.15

1 ISRN Mathematical Analysis It follows that F p,m,n, x; cp,m,n, t e xt m 1 e t n t 1 e c t m n t m n,m,n, 1 e t t s e xt s m 1 t s n 1 1 e s dt t s 1 e t ds t s 1 e t dt, 4.16 where the last inequality follows from Lemma.8. It remains to show the assertion for F p,m,n,q x; d p,m,n,q. In this case we use the series representation in. for 1 n 1 ψ n x to get F p,m,n,q x; dp,m,n,q m!n! 1 1 x i p 1 1 q 1 1 x j x i m 1 n 1. x j i j i j 4.17 We note the following Binet-Cauchy identity: n n n n a i c i b i d i a i d i b i c i i i i i i<j n ai b j a j b i ci d j c j d i We now apply the above identity with a i 1 x i m 1, b i 1 x i q 1, c i 1 x i p m, d i to get F p,m,n,q x; dp,m,n,q m!n! 1 i<j x i m 1 x j 1 1 q 1 m 1 x x j i q 1 x i p m 1 p m. x j 4.

ISRN Mathematical Analysis 13 We note that the second factor on the right-hand side above is completely monotonic on, andalsothat 1 x i m 1 x j q 1 m 1 x x j i q 1 x i q 1 q 1 x j x i m q 1 m q. x j 4.1 Certainly each factor on the right-hand side above is completely monotonic on, and it follows from the ring structure of completely monotonic functions on, that the left-hand side expression in 4.1 is also completely monotonic on,. Hence by the ring structure of completely monotonic functions on, again we deduce that F p,m,n,q x; d p,m,n,q is completely monotonic on,. We note here that when q, the function F m n,m,n, x; d m n,m,n, is not completely monotonic on, in general, as we observe for example that it follows from.5 that as x, F,1,1, x; d,1,1, <. Corresponding to m n 1,p,q intheorem 4.1, it was shown in the proof of 5, equation 4.39 and in 1, Lemma 1.1 the following special case in fact with strict inequality : ψ x ψ x, x >. 4. We note that inequality 4. follows from the limiting case c of the following inequalities for any <c<1andx>: 1 ψ x c ψ x >ψ x ψ x c > ψ x c ψ x, 4.3 c where the above inequalities reverse when c>1. Inequalities 4.3 are special cases of Theorem 1 in 1 as one can relate the inequalities in 4.3 to the properties concerning Δ,c;1 x or Δ,c;1/c x defined in 1. The left-hand side inequality of 4.3 was also established in the proof of, Theorem 1.1 and the right-hand side inequality in 4.3 was proven in 3, Lemma 7. To end this paper, we prove a q-analogue to 4.3. Theorem 4.. Let <q<1 and <c<1 be fixed. Then for any x>, 1 q ψq 1 q c x c ψ q x >q x ψ q x ψ q x c > ψ q x c ψ q x. 4.4 The above inequalities reverse when c>1.

14 ISRN Mathematical Analysis Proof. We first prove the left-hand side inequality of 4.4. For this, we define f x q x ψ q x c ψ q x 1 q ψq 1 q c x c ψ q x. 4.5 Applying.1, weobtain f x ln q n 1 1 q ln q 1 q c nq n 1 x q nc 1 1 q n 1 q 1 q c ln q q nx g n c; q, n q nx q nc 1 n 1 1 q n 4.6 where n 1 1 q kc 1 q n k c 1 q c g n c; q 1 q k 1 q n k 1 q n 1 c q 1 q n 1 k 1 It suffices to show that g n c; q > for<c<1andg n c; q < forc>1 when n. For this, we let y q c so that <y<1anditsuffices to show the function 1 y k 1 y n k / 1 y 1 y n 1 is increasing for <y<1and1 k n 1. On taking the logarithmic derivative of the above function, we see that it suffices to show that h k; y h n k; y h 1; y h n 1; y, where h z; y We now regard h z; y as a function of z and note that h z; y z 1 y z. 4.8 ln y y z 1 y z 3 u y z, u t t ln t t ln t. 4.9 It is easy to see that u t > for<t<1sothatu t <u 1 for<t<1. It follows that h z; y >. We then deduce from this and Lemma.4 that h k; y h n k; y h 1; y h n 1; y holds and this completes the proof for the left-hand side inequality of 4.4. For the right-hand side inequality of 4.4, one proceeds similarly to the above argument to see that it suffices to show the function 1 y k 1 y n k / 1 y n 1 is decreasing for <y<1 and 1 k n 1. This follows from the observation that both functions 1 y k / 1 y n 1 and 1 y n k are decreasing and this completes the proof.
