1 :t: Syntec Instruments Ltd. Switzertand power measurlng instrument a TB IO9
2 With the TB l09, which employs an entirely new principle of measuring power, it is incredibly easy to determine the power or torque of an internal combustion engine. Until now it was necessary to remove the engine from the vehicle or to drive on a roller type test bed. The only requirements for an accurate measurement with the TB l()9 is an adapter cable to the ignition coil - the measuring time is only approx. 1 second. Mechanical help (brakes, rollers etc.) are not required anymore, the performänce is determined in a purely electronic way. This enables a very reliable power measuring system, that has many advantages comparing to the traditional systems normally used: ) No need for a fixed test bed (expensive, time consuming, complicated). No special testing area necessary, the TB l()9 system allows precise measurements at all times everywhere. ) Easy handling, no special knowledge required. ) Fast and accurate, with maximum indulgence of engine and environment. ) In contrast to conventional rolling test beds, the TB 109 measures the engine power and not the power at the road wheels. ) Records in approx. 1 second with the XY-recorder the entire power or torque curve of the engine. ) No extra load on the transmission, minimum load on the engine, no exlra cooling required. ) Easy readable digital display for poryer and RPM. ) Fully extended print out systems: XY-recorder DIN 44, digital printer. The dynamic method of measuring lf an engine accelerates any load (eg. a car or itself), the rate of increase in speed or RPM is a value for the generated power. This acceleration is optained electronically from the number of revolutions from the engine, To calculate the power it is also necessary to know the load, in this case the moment of inertia. Every type of engine has a fixed moment of inertia, which depends on the construction of the engine. How to measure Before testing an engine the following datas have to be entered on the TB 109; - the moment of inertia - measuring RPM and limit - safety limit - the number of cylinders - the ranges for the XY-recorder With the help of an adapter cable the ignition current of the primary circuit passes through the TB lo9. This enables the instrument to measure the RPM and to interrupt the primary ignition circuit. Now the engine can be started. As soon as the engine obtains its normal operating temperature, the accelerator will be fully depressed (gearbox in neutral position). The engine will accelerate free. At the preselected RPM - value, the ignition will be interrupted and the power at this RPM is displayed. Parallel to the acceleration, the XY-recorder has recorded the power or torque diagram. For accurate measurements of engines fitted with carburators, it is recommanded to keep the throttles fully open for a few runs until the display shows steady values. This is because the acceleration jets of the carburators inject during a short period of time additional fuel to the engine than in steady mode. The switching on of the ignition after the deceleration phase is made automatically by the TB 109. This RPM can be adjusted between 100 and 3000 RPM - normal position 1000 RPM. Remote control To ensure a one-man-operating of the TB 109, an infrared remote control is supplied along with the device. The four buttons control "START" for starting the measurings, "DATA" and "HEAD" to activate the digital printer and "PEN" to start the recording.
3 The possibilities of recording and documenting The digital display of the TB 109 shows the power at the preselected RPM value. Simultaneously the maximum generated power and the corresponding RPM-value are displayed. The XY-recorder produces during the acceleration the entire power or torque diagram. These curves give a good impression about the engine at all speed ranges and in the transition. lf documentation of the digital values is required, a printer can be added in the TB l09. XY-recorder DIN A4 This recording instrument will be built into the TB l09. A plastic cover protects the mechanical parts from dust. The A4 recording paper has standard perforation and can be filed easily. The recording stylus can be delivered in four different colours, to clarify any modification carried out on the tested engine. Range selection The TB 109 can be fitted with a range choice panel. These switches control the XY-recorder. The diagrams will be recorded in optimal size. Like this, also small power curves can be displayed in reasonable sizes. Standard models X-direction: RPM Y-direction: interchangeable 0*250 kw 0*500 Nm Model with range selection3 X-direction: RPM RPM RPM Y-direction: kw/o-500 Nm kwo-250 Nm 0-62 kw/o- 125 Nm Set for heavy Diesel engines The performance of heavy Diesel engines often exceed the ranges in the TB 1(l9. For these types of engines a set is offered to fulfil these particular conditions. Another touch at the "HEAD" button prints out the programmed adress of the workshop.the informationsare printed on 6 cm metallic paper - combined with the recordingsof the XY-recordera perfect possibilityof documentation. For a lot of cars, this method is the only way to check the power, like four-wheeldriven vehicles.the addition of hard copy print outs in either digital or graphic form provides simple but accurate records for the workshop and for the customer and these are especially beneficialas "before and after" comparisons.
5 The electronics Only the use of the most up to date electronicomponents are selected for the construction of the TB lo9. Being small, the TB l09 is easy to transport. The usual measuring time of the TB 109 of approx. 0.5 second seems to be a very short time to calculate power and torque. But modern electronics work in much higher speed compared to this measuring time. Safety features Special efforts have been made in the TB 109 to saveguard the engines on test. All the electronics that is responsible for the RPM - limitation is made twice: double RPM - settings for the limit (measuring RPM and RPM limit) and double circuits for the ignition limitation. Should one system fail, which is very rare with modern electronics, the second system would act as safety limitation. To achieve even more accuracy and safety, the TB l09 posseses an electronic system that examines the ignition pulse sequence. lf any irregularity occurs in the pulses the logic will disconnecthe ignition circuit. For example: ff within 120V of the time period between the fpregoing two ignitlon pulses no new pulse will be detected, the logic system will detectthis as an error and switch oflthe ignition. No ignition pulses are detected bythe "NO PULSE" system - the measuring will be interrupted. The high reliability in cutting the ignition is not the only reason that makes this method to measure power and torque so secure. The fact, that the engine is loaded for only 1 second compared to tests on roller type test beds, shows the advantage. Because of these short measuring periods, there is no need for an additional cooling system. How to measure Diesel engines Diesel engines also can be tested with the TB l09. Since these engines don't have an ignition system, a light optical system was developed, to detect the RPM value. A few ref lection stickers are attached to the crankshaft pulley. The light beam from the sensor now simply will be pointed at these markers. The measuring procedure takes place in the same way as it is done with fuel engines. The only exception is, that the RPM doesn't have to be limited - every Diesel has a built in rev control. The same optical device is used to measure fuel engines that don't have a standard ignition system. To protect the engine against over-reving, the primary circuit of the ignition in this case will be connected to input 2 of the TB 109.
