1 Metric Basics - Lab activity 2011/2012 Group Members and their job title: Objectives: Students will Use specific lab equipment to make measurements Measure items unit metric units 3. Attention group leader- Instruct all members of your group that accuracy counts and include units on all of your measurements and to include units on measurements. A. LENGTH (What is the metric unit used to measure length? ) 1. Draw a line that is 7 mm long. Start your line here a. What is the meaning of the prefix milli? b. How many millimeters in a meter? 2. Draw a line that is 7 cm long. Start your line here a. What is the meaning of the prefix centi? b. How many centimeters in a meter 3. a. Which line is longer the 7cm line or the 7mm line? b. How many times longer is the 7cm line compared to the 7mm line? 4. Estimate the following lengths in metric units and then measure them to determine their actual lengths. The letters in parenthesis indicate the units you must record your answer in. Fill the beaker with 50mL of water and measure the mass and record in the data table below. Calculate the mass of the 50mL of water that you measured in the beaker and record in the data table. TEMPERATURE (What is the metric unit used to measure temperature? ) Examine the thermometer of each container and record the temperature in the data table below Container A- Hot plate 2 Temperature B- Hot plate 7 C- Room temp water D- Ice water

4 Use the thermometer to measure the temperature of the following Air temp in room Air temp outside in shade Air temp outside in sun Soil temp outside at soil surface Soil temp outside 4cm below soil surface Soil temp outside 8cm below soil surface Arm pit temp at rest Arm pit temp after running in place for 1min Skin temp at surface of arm 1. What was the difference in temperature in the armpit at rest compared to the armpit after 1 minute of exercise? What might be the cause or source of the temperature difference? 2. Create a bar graph comparing the temp difference at the 3 different soil locations, temperature vs soil depth. Remember A bar graph is used to display data in a number of separate or distinct categories. They must have: x (horizontal) and y (vertical) axis labeled clearly.
