Ad hoc EPPO Workshop on insecticide resistance of Meligethes spp. (pollen beetle) on oilseed rape BBA-Dahlem, Berlin September 3-5, 2007
The position of TALSTAR 8 SC in a resistance management program against Meligethes spp. in oil seed rape Dr. Verena Korr, Belchim Crop Protection TALSTAR registered trademark of FMC
Today's Presentation TALSTAR 8 SC (bifenthrin, 80 gai/l SC) Registration and use experiences Efficacy trials 2007 Stem weevil control Combining control with resistance management Invasion of pollen beetle and stem weevil in 2007 Recommended Spray Program Conclusions
TALSTAR 8 SC Bifenthrin 80 g / l SC Excellent field efficacy in against several pests Emergency approval to control Meligethes in spring 2007 Full registration since July 2007 OSR Meligethes, cabbage, seed weevil, rape stem- and cabbage stem weevil Cereals Potato Peas Type I pyrethroid
The difference of bifenthrin to standard pyrethroids Tri- Fluorogroup: Bifenthrin Biphenyl-alcohol Instead of Phenoxyphenyl alcohol No α-cyano group Acid moiety Alcohol moiety
TALSTAR 8 SC Use Experiences in OSR Spring 2007 Main uses in all key oilseed rape growing areas 25% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% distribution of use (%) Baden Wü... Sachsen-... Franken Rheinland... Nordrhei... Schleswi... Mecklenburg Schwaben... Niedersa... Sachsen,... Recommendation: First treatment when both, stem weevils & pollen beetle are present Actual use : Application mostly beginning of April No coherent adherence to the national resistance management recommendation. Very good control of Meligethes under commercial applications.
TALSTAR 8 SC Efficacy trials Meligethes in OSR Evaluate TALSTAR activity against pollen beetle in a range of field condition Randomised block design, 4 replicates Plot size 5 x 10 m Single application at BBCH Assessments 1 DAT, 3-5 DAT and 7-10 DAT Count pollen beetles per 4 x 50 plants
Meligethes field test Golchem (Schwerin), Meck.-Vorp Application April 4 th, 2007 ; BBCH Bifenthrin 10 gai/ha 80 7 Type 2 : 7,5 gai/ha efficacy [%] number of PB / plant untreated control DAT 3 DAT 7 DAT 11 DAT 13 DAT 1 0 Source: LALLF MV, Schwerin, Dr. Erichsen

Meligethes field test Pronstorf (Kr. Segeberg), Schl.-Hol Application March 28 th, 2007 ; BBCH Bifenthrin 10 gai/ha efficacy [%] number of PB/ plant Type 2 : 7,5 gai/ha untreated control DAA DAA DAA 1 0 Source: ALR Lübeck, Landschreiber
Meligethes field test Groß Schönebeck (Land Brandenburg) Application April 3 rd, 2007 ; BBCH LVLF Effectivity % (Abbot) Number of Meligethes in untreated 8,3 beetles / plant (April 3 rd, 2007) 1 DAA 3 DAA 7 DAA Karate Zeon (0,050 l/ha) Biscaya(0,30 l/ha) Talstar 8 SC(0,125 l/ha) Reldan 22(1,5 l/ha) Source: LVLF Bdg., Schröder
Meligethes field test Nuthe-Urstromtal (Land Brandenburg) Application: April 12 th, 2007 ; BBCH LVLF Effectivity % (Abbott) Number of Meligethes in untreated 4,5 beetles/plant (April 12) & 11,0 beetles/plant (April 13) DAA 5 DAA 8 DAA 0 Karate Zeon 0,050 l/ha Biscaya 0,3 l/ha Talstar 8 SC 0,125 l/ha Source: LVLF Bdg., Schröder
Rape - and cabbage stem weevil control Groß Niendorf 2005 Application ; by ALR Lübeck observation of beetle invasion assessment of attacked plants at after one treatment number of weevils / yellow trap CEUTNA CEUTQU attacked plants (%) untreated control Bifenthrin 8 g ai/ha Z-cypermeth. 10 g ai/ha L-cyhaloth. 7,5 g ai/ha Source: BCP (because of strong hail, yield measurement wasn t possible)
Combining effective Meligethes control with Resistance Management Strategy Limit pyrethroids to one application per season Use the pyrethroid with most activity in bioassay tests Avoid the exclusive use of any one compound or class Treat when reaching threshold (reliable and accepted) Implement resistance management programs country wide Introduce additional chemical classes and rotate the classes
Pollen beetle 2007 Overview pollen beetle: Begin of incidence at In most of the cultivated areas the incidence started in the 2 nd week of March. In some warmer regions the first incidence was already observed in February. These cards are daily available on
Rape stem weevil 2007 Overview stem cabbage weevil : Egg laying forecast at The first treatment to avoid egg laying must be done in warmer regions latest at 11 th March. In other regions treatments against stem weevil should have been done around 25 th of March. These cards are daily available on
Pollen beetle 2007 Overview pollen beetle: Invasion forecast at Because on weather conditions in some warmer places the main incidence was possible in the 1 st week of April. In most areas the temperatures were first optimal for the main invasion of pollen beetle during the 2 nd week of April. These cards are daily available on
Recommended Spray Programme with TALSTAR in function of pest presence In Germany an average of 2 applications are made against all pests in OSR ; regional variations 1 to 3 TALSTAR as first treatment considering that in most regions first pollen beetle are already present when rape stem weevil and / or cabbage stem weevil also need to be treated Application targeting pollen beetle only (Not always and everywhere needed) A Neonicotinoid should be preferred At very strong infestation also a organophosphates can be used, but the blooming of OSR must be considered! When strictly applying the rule of alternating different mode of action insecticides, TALSTAR may be used during flowering against cabbage seed weevil and pollen beetle.
Recommended Spray Programme with TALSTAR in function of pest presence First treatment Considering that in most regions first pollen beetle are already present when > Rape stem weevil and / or > Cabbage stem weevil A special application directly targeting Pollen beetle Neonicotinoid Second treatment Cabbage seed weevil NNI or TALSTAR Beetle and larvae of PB are still present TALSTAR 8 SC 0,125 l/ha At heavy infestations a organophosphate can be used but watch out blooming of OSR
Conclusion 2007 Talstar is a valuable tool to control pollen beetle and stem weevils in Oil seed rape. Talstar is a very suitable tool for use in a anti resistant strategy program together with other mode of action insecticides.
Many thanks to! Dr. Petersen and Mrs. Landschreiber ALR Lübeck Dr. Erichsen, LALLF MV, Schwerin and Mrs. Nagel, LALLF MV, Greifswald Mr. Schröder, LVLF Land Brandenburg For sharing their trial results Mr. Johnen, proplant GmbH for the overviews of pests invasion
