How many orbitals can fit in each energy level, how many electrons can fit in each? A2. s =1 orbital = 2 electrons p = 3 = 6 electrons d = 5 = 10 electrons f = 7 = 14 electrons

4 Notes 1: Electron configurations 3 Rules in making electron configurations 1) Aufbau principle Electrons occupy the orbital of lowest energy first. Draw figure 5.5 like filling a glass of water, the lower levels will fill first.

5 Notes 1: Electron configurations Rule 2) Pauli exclusion principle -there are 2 electrons per orbital -electrons in the same orbital spin in opposite directions -to represent direction we use or Rule 3) Hund's rule -we fill as many orbitals with electrons going the same direction first -then we fill the orbitals with electrons spinning in the opposite direction.
