The Tehery-Wager Project Regional geoscience initiative: Targeted bedrock mapping Surficial geology mapping Targeted stream sediment surveys Collaborative project: Geological Survey of Canada (GEM 2 - South Rae Activity) Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office (SINED) Contributions from: Université Laval Dalhousie University Memorial University Duration: University of New Brunswick Université du Québec à Montréal Nunavut Arctic College 2 field seasons (2015/2016), results through 2019

Geological context Davis Strait Hudson Bay

Previous mapping Reconnaissance mapping Wright, 1955 Lord and Wright, 1967 Heywood, 1967 Gordon and Heywood, Daly Bay complex Henderson et al., 1990 Wager Shear Zone Panagapko et al., 2003 RPM New reconnaissance survey by the GSC in 2012 McMartin et al., 2013 Wodicka et al., in prep

Project Objectives 1) Characterize and define distinct units within the Archean gneiss Define their relationships with overlying supracrustal rocks Crystallization ages, Archean metamorphic events? 2) Document stratigraphy of supracrustal belts, determine depositional ages and environments Correlations to other known sequences? 3) Determine the timing, extent and degree of metamorphism and deformation in the area related to the Snowbird Tectonic Zone and/or terminal collision of the Trans-Hudson Orogeny Peak pressure/temperature of metamorphism, spatial distribution Development of trans-lithospheric fault systems 4) Evaluate the economic potential of the area Metal and carving stone potential? Diamond potential? Do large-scale faults provide favourable environments for mineralization?

2016 Field Season June 24 July field crew 5 camp crew 1 Bell 206 LR Turbo Otter supply runs Camped next to Peregrine Diamond Ltd s Nanuq Camp June 24, 2016

2015 recap

Map units identified in 2015 ~2.7 Ga Granodiorite Tonalite gneiss Biotite ± hornblende Granitic injections Pods, lenses, rafts of mafic and supracrustal rocks Archean(?) monzo- to syenogranite gneiss Biotite + magnetite ± muscovite ~2.6 Ga K-spar porphyritic monzogranite Rapakivi texture, similar to the Snow Island suite

2015 recap

Map units identified in 2015 Diverse supracrustal rock suite Quartzite Psammite, semipelite, pelite Mafic rocks (metavolcanics?) Metaironformation, garnetite Calc-silicate and marble Ultramafic boudins The Chesterfield belt Pluton in double-plunging fold ~ Ga Hudson suite monzogranite Homogeneous plutons, biotite ± magnetite Contain xenoliths of orthogneiss and supracrustal rocks Crs-grained to pegmatitic dykes and sills

2016 units

Siliciclastic-dominated supracrustal sequence The park belt Basal quartzite layers m Sillimanite±muscovite Intercalated semipelite and pelite Biotite+garnet±sillimanite Leucosome layers Discrete mafic intermediate layers m Gossanous horizons Interpreted as metavolcanics Thick psammite unit Biotite±garnet Leucosome lenses The double-plunging fold belt

Siliciclastic-dominated supracrustal sequence Based on geography, extent, lithostratigraphy, the sequence probably correlates with the Paleoproterozoic Ketyet River Group described north of Baker Lake. Rainbird et al., 2010

2016 units

Granulite-Facies Domains Monzodiorite Wager shear zone Rare Opx in orthogneiss Migmatitic textures Shear zone fabrics cut by undeformed monzodiorite Kummel Lake domain Opx in plutonic rocks Migmatitic Gt+Bt±Sill±Crd semipelite Waxy-green plagioclase Foggy blue quartz Waxy-green metagabbro Opx in granodiorite

2016 units

Ultrapotassic intrusions Several plug-style lamprophyre intrusions associated with syenite Correspond to strong magnetic-high anomalies Correlative with Christopher Island formation and Martel syenite? Syenite Ol-Cpx-Mt-Bt ~80 m

2016 units

Wager shear and Chesterfield fault zones WSZ: Steep foliation, sub-horizontal lineations, dextral indicators CFZ: south-dipping fabrics, steeply plunging lineations, porphyroclastic monzogranite

Regional Metamorphism Variety of peak metamorphic conditions across the study area, as recorded by mineral assemblages Granulite-facies peak, pervasive amphibolitefacies overprint Amphibolite-facies peak, minimal retrogression Granulite-facies peak, amphibolite-facies retrogression Granulite-facies peak, minimal retrogression

Economic considerations Diamond potential 3 known kimberlite bodies (Peregrine Diamonds), vast expanses of Archean crust Base/precious metal potential Anomalous Ag, Cu, Bi, Au found in till near supracrustal belts Ni-Cu-PGE potential Mafic-ultramafic layers in supracrustal panels Metaperidotite Whole-rock geochemistry: Cr 6710 ppm Ni 1890 ppm Co 109 ppm

Summary highlights from 2016 mapping Divided supracrustal rocks into 2 sequences one with variable lithologies, one dominated by siliciclastics Identified large areas with granulite-facies assemblages and undeformed plutonic rocks Located several plug-style ultrapotassic intrusions Traced the Wager shear and Chesterfield fault zones farther inland Delineated areas with different peak-metamorphic grades
