NSIDC Metrics Report Lisa Booker February 9, 2012

ACSI Scores 2011 ACSI survey summary Sent to 5458 users; increased number of users contacted NSIDC response rate was 10%, up 1% from last year. NSIDC Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) is 76, down from 77 last year. This drop is not statistically significant. 60% of users used a data center specific search tool to find data Most common needs regarding services we can improve or provide: On-demand subsetting (temporal and spatial)? Saved user preferences? More notification of updates / new data? Data subscription service (we do offer with ECS data, but not non-ecs) = included in current plans? = needs to be considered in future plans 2 PoDAG XXIX

ACSI Comments and Actions A selection of comments from the ACSI Data Access and Services? A single place for downloading instead of having different portals? A list of software to support the product as well as sample projects using the data More online tools to convert between formats Data? More user friendly format Direct links to data? Better visibility and description of ftp structure along with instructions Would rather spend time analyzing the data not retrieving and manipulating it. 3 PoDAG XXIX

ACSI Comments and Actions A selection of comments from the ACSI Search I always Google my search because it s simply faster than browsing through your web site? One user log-in that saves preferred search parameters (temporal, spatial, etc.) Convenient way to show inter-comparison of different products Would like to search by country or region Documentation? More information about satellite, instrument, mission, algorithms? Examples on how to open/view the data Better organization of data types, formats at a single page with linkage to download 4 PoDAG XXIX

Number of Users 3500 Top 10 Data Sets for Calendar Year 2011 trends in users over past 10 years Trend in Number of Users for CY 2011 Top 10 Data Sets Over 10 Years Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS (nsidc-0192) Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves (nsidc-0102) Near-Real-Time DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations (nsidc-0081) Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data (nsidc-0051) Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid Weekly Snow Cover and Sea Ice Extent Version 3 (nsidc-0046) GLAS/ICEsat L2 Global Land Surface Altimetry Data (GLA14) AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 Surface Soil Moisture, Interpretive Params, & QC EASE-Grids DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Pathfinder Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures (nsidc-0032) AMSR-E/Aqua L2A Global Swath Spatially- Resampled Brightness Temperatures GLAS/ICESat L1A Global Altimetry Data (GLA01) The Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies data set (blue line) had 9091 users in 2007 and 5621 users in These data points are off the chart. 5 PoDAG XXIX

Top 10 Data Sets: Trend Analysis Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies and Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves why so popular? Data sets are in easy-to-use formats. Data are available as ASCII text and images. Users of Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies peaked in 2007, likely due to increased interest around the sea ice minimum. Users have been dropping off as the data set was not updated between 2007 and early AMSR-E L2A seems to have the largest drop in users from 2010 to 2011, a decrease of 67%. Reason is unknown. Number of files downloaded only decreased by 13% The Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies (nsidc-0192), Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves (nsidc-0102), AMSR-E L2A and L3 Land, GLAS 14, and the sea ice concentration (nsidc-0081, nsidc-0051) data sets are consistently in the top 10 during the past 5 years. 6 PoDAG XXIX

Top 10 Data Sets for Calendar Year 2011 by User includes users for past 10 years Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS (nsidc0192) Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves (nsidc0102) Near-Real-Time DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations (nsidc0081) Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data (nsidc0051) Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid Weekly Snow Cover and Sea Ice Extent Version 3 (nsidc0046) GLAS/ICEsat L2 Global Land Surface Altimetry Data (GLA14) AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 Surface Soil Moisture, Interpretive Params, & QC EASE-Grids DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Pathfinder Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures (nsidc0032) AMSR-E/Aqua L2A Global Swath Spatially-Resampled Brightness Temperatures GLAS/ICESat L1A Global Altimetry Data (GLA01) PoDAG XXIX

Bottom 10 Data Sets: Trend Analysis The Nimbus-7 Antenna Temperatures data set is top of the list. The users that downloaded data in calendar year 2011 did so in the last 3 months of the year. There are no records of downloads for this data set between 2002 and We only have a record of 1 user registering for the data this year. There were 3 previous registrations that occurred between the years of 1998 and The last update to the Nimbus-7 SMMR metadata records occurred in The data sets cover a period of 10 years ending in The Arctic Water Vapor Characteristics from Rawinsondes data set is the only data set to see an overall decline in users. Release date appears to be Temporal coverage is 1954 to Four users registered for the data set between 1997 and 2004 All other data sets have no significant changes in overall users in the past 10 years. 9 PoDAG XXIX

ACSI Full Comments User Experience Hard to find geographical information (lat/long) Pages not have direct link to download Best way to contact is person to person Overall complicated and confusing web site Well organized but overwhelmed by the enormity Searching was logical but data access was confusing Data sets shown on map not available in database Web site confusing & laborious Search is intuitive but not convenient Searching for data by geographical location was difficult Difficult to download large amount of data (too many files etc.) Best resource is a phone number and address of a competent person. Most search systems have inherent difficulties that need to be addressed on a case-bycase basis to get the exact information needed. 16 PoDAG XXIX

ACSI Full Comments Data access and services: More online tools to convert Binary to ASCII, ArcGIS, or NetCDF A list of software that could support the product as well as sample projects using these data Select all option encompassing multiple pages http delivery instead of ftp Ability to download a section of the data (LoadDap?) Image processing tools Keep data up to date Fewer files to download Subscription to SNODAS or visible link to the site of the agency that creates the data Drag and Drop, faster preview, easier geographic subset A single place for downloading instead of having different portals 17 PoDAG XXIX

ACSI Full Comments Data: Near-Real-Time More user friendly format Standard format across data centers No binary Ready to use, no conversion to get the data into a usable format Ability to export kml file ASCII, NetCDF Better visibility and description of ftp structure along with instructions Direct links to data Coverage of South America (Chile, Argentina) Make metadata more visible in the imagery download Fewer files to download 18 PoDAG XXIX

ACSI Full Comments Documentation: More information about satellite, instrument, mission, algorithms Make more visible and easy to access (don t want to dig) Examples on how to open/ view the data Better organization of data types, formats at a single page with linkage to download Tool tutorials or example usage with data Provide with an example of how common people can understand the products More information on error limits and QA 19 PoDAG XXIX
