1 A NOTE ON FELLER SEMIGROUPS AND RESOLVENTS VADIM KOSTRYKIN, JÜRGEN POTTHOFF, AND ROBERT SCHRADER ABSTRACT. Various equivalen condiions for a semigroup or a resolven generaed by a Markov process o be of Feller ype are given. arxiv: v1 [mah.pr] 19 Feb 211 The Feller propery of he semigroup generaed by a Markov process plays a prominen role in he heory of sochasic processes. This is mainly due o he fac ha if he Feller propery holds rue, hen under he addiional assumpion of righ coninuiy of he pahs he simple Markov propery implies he srong Markov propery e.g., [3, Theorem III.3.1] or [4, Theorem III.15.3]). However, in many insances i is of advanage o consider he associaed resolven insead of he semigroup. Therefore we presen in his noe a resul which saes various forms of he equivalence of he Feller propery as expressed in erms of he semigroup or of he resolven. The maerial here seems o be quie well-known, and our presenaion of i owes very much o [2] mos noably he inversion formula for he Laplace ransform, equaion 3) in connecion wih lemma 5. On he oher hand, we were no able o locae a reference where he resuls are colleced and saed in he form of he heorem given below. Assume ha E, d) is a locally compac separable meric space wih Borel σ algebra denoed by BE). BE) denoes he space of bounded measurable real valued funcions on E, C E) he subspace of coninuous funcions vanishing a infiniy. BE) and C E) are equipped wih he sup-norm. The following definiion is as in [3]: Definiion 1. A Feller semigroup is a family U = U, ) of posiive linear operaors on C E) such ha a) U = id and U 1 for every ; b) U +s = U U s for every pair s, ; c) lim U f f = for every f C E). Analogously we define Definiion 2. A Feller resolven is a family R = R λ, λ > ) of posiive linear operaors on C E) such ha a) R λ λ 1 for every λ > ; b) R λ R µ = µ λ)r λ R µ for every pair λ, µ > ; Dae: February 18, Mahemaics Subjec Classificaion. 6J25, 6J35, 47D7. Key words and phrases. Feller processes, Feller semigroups, Feller resolvens.
2 2 V. KOSTRYKIN, J. POTTHOFF, AND R. SCHRADER c) lim λ λr λ f f = for every f C E). In he sequel we shall focus our aenion on semigroups U and resolvens R associaed wih an E valued Markov process, and which are a priori defined on BE). In our noaion, we shall no disinguish beween U and R as defined on BE) and heir resricions o C E).) Le X = X, ) be a Markov process wih sae space E, and le P x, x E) denoe he associaed family of probabiliy measures on some measurable space Ω, A), so ha in paricular P x X = x) = 1. E x ) denoes he expecaion wih respec o P x. We assume hroughou ha for every f BE) he mapping, x) E x fx ) ) is measurable from R + E ino R. The semigroup U and resolven R associaed wih X ac on BE) as follows. For f BE), x E,, and λ > se 1) 2) U fx) = E x fx ) ), R λ fx) = e λ U fx) d. Propery a) of Definiions 1 and 2 is obviously saisfied. The semigroup propery, b) in definiion 1, follows from he Markov propery of X, and his in urn implies he resolven equaion, b) of definiion 2. Moreover, i follows also from he Markov propery of X ha he semigroup and he resolven commue. On he oher hand, in general neiher he propery ha U or R map C E) ino iself, nor he srong coninuiy propery c) in Definiions 1, 2 hold rue on BE) or on C E). If W is a subspace of BE) he resolven equaion shows ha he image of W under R λ is independen of he choice of λ >, and in he sequel we shall denoe he image by RW. Furhermore, for simpliciy we shall wrie UC E) C E), if U f C E) for all, f C E). Theorem. The following saemens are equivalen: a) U is Feller. b) R is Feller. c) UC E) C E), and for all f C E), x E, lim U fx) = fx). d) UC E) C E), and for all f C E), x E, lim λ λr λ fx) = fx). e) RC E) C E), and for all f C E), x E, lim U fx) = fx). f) RC E) C E), and for all f C E), x E, lim λ λr λ fx) = fx). We prepare a sequence of lemmas. The firs one follows direcly from he dominaed convergence heorem: Lemma 3. Assume ha for f BE), U f f as. Then λr λ f f as λ +. Lemma 4. The semigroup U is srongly coninuous on RBE).
3 FELLER SEMIGROUPS AND RESOLVENTS 3 Proof. If srong coninuiy a = has been shown, srong coninuiy a > follows from he semigroup propery of U, and he fac ha U and R commue. Therefore i is enough o show srong coninuiy a =. Le f BE), λ >, >, and consider for x E he following compuaion U R λ fx) R λ fx) = fx+s ) ) ds = e λ e λs E x fxs ) ) ds = e λ 1 ) e λs E x fxs ) ) ds fxs ) ) ds fxs ) ) ds fxs ) ) ds where we used Fubini s heorem and he Markov propery of X. Thus we ge he following esimaion U R λ f R λ f e λ 1 ) ) e λs ds + e λs ds f = 2 1 e λ ) f, λ which converges o zero as decreases o zero. For λ >,, f BE), x E se 3) U λ 1) n+1 fx) = nλ e nλ R nλ fx). n! n=1 Observe ha, because of nλ R nλ f f, he las sum converges in BE). For he proof of he nex lemma we refer he reader o [2, p. 477 f]: Lemma 5. For all, f RBE), U λ f converges in BE) o U f as λ ends o infiniy. Lemma 6. If U C E) C E) for all, hen R λ C E) C E), for all λ >. If R λ C E) C E), for some λ >, and R λ C E) is dense in C E), hen U C E) C E) for all. Proof. Assume ha U C E) C E) for all, le f C E), x E, and suppose ha x n, n N) is a sequence converging in E, d) o x. Then a sraighforward applicaion of he dominaed convergence heorem shows ha for every λ >, R λ fx n ) converges o R λ fx). Hence R λ f C E). Now assume ha ha R λ C E) C E), for some and herefore for all λ >, and ha R λ C E) is dense in C E). Consider f RC E), >, and for λ > define U λ f as in equaion 3). Because R nλ f C E) and he series in formula 3) converges uniformly in x E, we ge U λ f C E). By lemma 5, we find ha U λ f converges uniformly o U f as λ +. Hence U f C E). Since RC E)
4 4 V. KOSTRYKIN, J. POTTHOFF, AND R. SCHRADER is dense in C E), U is a conracion and C E) is closed, we ge ha U C E) C E) for every. The following lemma is proved as a par of Theorem 17.4 in [1] cf. also he proof of Proposiion 2.4 in [3]). Lemma 7. Assume ha RC E) C E), and ha for all x E, f C E), lim λ λr λ fx) = fx). Then RC E) is dense in C E). If for all f C E), x E, U fx) converges o fx) as decreases o zero, hen similarly as in he proof of lemma 3 we ge ha λr λ fx) converges o fx) as λ +. Thus we obain he following Corollary 8. Assume ha RC E) C E), and ha for all x E, f C E), lim U fx) = fx). Then RC E) is dense in C E). Now we can come o he Proof of he heorem. We begin by proving he equivalence of saemens a), b), d), and f): a) b) Assume ha U is Feller. From lemma 6 i follows ha R λ C E) C E), λ >. Le f C E). Since U is srongly coninuous on C E), lemma 3 implies ha λr λ f converges o f as λ ends o +. Hence R is Feller. b) f) This is rivial. f) d) By lemma 7, RC E) is dense in C E), and herefore lemma 6 enails ha UC E) C E). d) a) By lemmas 6 and 7, RC E) is dense in C E), and herefore by lemma 4, U is srongly coninuous on C E). Thus U is Feller. Now we prove he equivalence of a), c), and e): a) c) This is rivial. c) e) This follows direcly from Lemma 6. e) a) By corollary 8, RC E) is dense in C E), hence i follows from lemma 6 ha UC E) C E). Furhermore, lemma 4 implies he srong coninuiy of U on RC E), and by densiy herefore on C E). a) follows. Acknowledgemen. J. P. hanks Florian Werner for a useful discussion. REFERENCES [1] O.
