Casimir energy of an open string with ange-dependent boundary condition A. Jahan 1 and I. Brevik 2 1 Research Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics of Maragha (RIAAM, Maragha, Iran 2 Department of Energy and Process Engineering, arxiv: v1 [hep-th] 1 Dec 218 Norwegian University of Science and Technoogy, Trondheim, Norway jahan@riaam.ac.ir, iver.h.brevik@ntnu.no Abstract We consider an open string whose ends are attached to two different soid beams (rods. This set-up is equivaent to two scaar fieds with a set of constraints at their end-points. We construct the Green s function of the system and use it to obtain the Casimir energy which is found to be a sum of the Lüscher potentia energy and a term depending on the ange between the beams. Keywords: ange-dependent boundary condition; Green s function; Casimir energy. 1 Introduction The Casimir energy is a physica manifestation of vacuum energy [1]. It is purey a quantum phenomenon which, for exampe, causes two parae conducting pates to attract each other. The vacuum energy of open and cosed strings, as simpe cases, has been investigated by severa authors. Lüscher et a were the first ones who cacuated the Casimir energy of an open string which is now caed the Lüscher potentia [2-4]. They obtained this potentia by considering a static quarkantiquark with the chromo-eectric fied between them as a vibrating string. The Casimir energy of a piecewise string was considered in [5-9]. The vacuum energy of an open string paced between two beads was obtained in [1]. The Lüscher potentia is recovered when the masses of the beads become arge. The quantum corrections to the Lüscher potentia were cacuated in [11], where the authors interpreted the corrections as a sort of non-oca effect in a bosonic string. The Nambu- Goto mode of an open string was used to mode the inter-quark potentia in [12, 13]. The string was assumed to end on point masses with mass m. It was shown that one recovers the Lüscher potentia in the imits m,. The present work is seque to a previous one where we obtained the Casimir energy as the zerotemperature imit of free energy of an open string in an ange-dependent set-up [14]. We obtained the finite-temperature free energy using the path integra method. Here, we appy a different method to obtain the Casimir energy by constructing the Green s function 1
Figure 1: A vibrating string (in red whose ends can move aong the beams (in back. There is a reative ange θ between the beams. of an open string whose ends are ocated on two straight beams (soid rods. There is assumed to be a reative ange between the beams, and as a resut the boundary conditions for the ends of the string depend on the ange between the beams. Having at hand the ange-depending Green s function, we compute the zero-point energy. The energy turns out to be a sum of an ange-dependent term and the Lüscher potentia. 2 Cassica Dynamics Assume a string whose ends are attached to two beams and can freey side on them. The string has tension T and cross-section A. Its mass density is µ. One of the beams is ocated at z = and the other at z =. The anges between the X-axis and the rods at z = and z = are θ 1 and θ 2, respectivey. The dispacement of the string from equiibrium is parae to the X Y pane and can be described by a dispacement fied φ(z, t, which is written as φ(z, t = φ 1 (z, tê 1 + φ 2 (z, tê 2. (1 Here ê 1 and ê 2 are unit vectors aong the X-axis and Y -axis, respectivey. The Lagrangian density for the dispacement fied is given by L = 1 2 µa ( φ(z, t t T ( φ(z, t 2, (2 which yieds the the wave-equation ( 1 2 v 2 t φ(z, t =, (3 where the speed of sound is v = ( 1 T 2 µa. The ends of the string satisfy the constraints φ 2 (, t tan θ 1 φ 1 (, t =, (4 φ 2 (, t tan θ 2 φ 1 (, t =. (5 2
These constraints ead to the foowing boundary conditions at the ends of string, φ 1 (, t φ 1 (, t + tan θ 1 φ 2 (, t + tan θ 2 φ 2 (, t =, (6 =. (7 Then the soutions become [14] φ 1 (z, t = φ 2 (z, t = where the quantized wave number k n occurs, ( a n e iωnt + ā n e iωnt cos(k n z + θ 1, ω n = vk n (8 ( a n e iωnt + ā n e iωnt sin(k n z + θ 1, (9 k n = π (n + r, r = 1 π (θ 2 θ 1. (1 As is seen from (3, (4 and (5, one can interpret the whoe set-up as a free fied theory with a set of constraints at the end points z =, of the string. To put this resut into some perspective, it is of interest to make a comparison to other resuts coming from reated string set-ups. As an exampe, consider the piecewise uniform string anayzed in its origina and simpest form in [7]. There, a cosed string of tota ength = I + II consisting of two pieces I and II was subject to two boundary conditions at the junctions: (i continuity of the transverse dispacements, and (ii continuity of the transverse eastic forces. With the tension ration defined as x = T I /T II and the ength ratio defined as s = II / I the dispersion equation turned out to be ( ( 4x ωπ ωπ ωsπ sin (1 x sin sin =. ( s 1 + s This equation can be soved by various methods. For iustrative purposes we restrict ourseves to the case of a sma tension ratio, x. Then the eigenvaue spectrum for the two branches becomes distributed over two sequences ω n (s = (1 + sπn/, (12 ω n (s 1 = (1 + s 1 πn/. (13 These expressions, showing simpe proportionaity to n, are thus different from the form (1 which is inhomogeneous. The reason for the inhomogeneity, of course, is the ange difference θ 2 θ 1 between the rods. Another reated case of interest to compare with, is the so-caed quantum spring [15]. This system considers the osciations of a massess scaar fied under heix boundary conditions, and the Casimir force parae to the axis of the heix is simiar to the eastic force in a spring. In this case the eigenvaues turn actuay out to be inhomogenous in the integer number n, the inhomogeneity arising from the pitch of the circumference of the heix. 3
3 Green s function To construct the Green s function, we introduce the eigen-modes u α n(z defined to be u 1 n(z = 1 cos(k n z + θ 1, (14 u 2 n(z = 1 sin(k n z + θ 1, (15 which satisfy the orthogonaity reation dz 2 u α n (zuα n(z = 1 α=1 dz cos z(k n k n = δ n n. (16 One may rewrite (16 as dz tr [ u α n (zuα n(z ] = δ n n. (17 Now, et us consider an arbitrary function h α (z expanded in terms of the eigenmodes as h α (z = c n u α n(z. (18 By virtue of (16, the expansion coefficient is found to be c n = dz 2 u β n(z h β (z. (19 β=1 Pugging this into (18 yieds h α (z = dz 2 ( β=1 u α n(zu β n(z h β (z. (2 This equaity hods if the cosure reation of the form u α n(zu β n(z = K αβ (z, z δ(z z, (21 is supposed, provided that The expicit form of the matrix K αβ (z, z is [ cos K αβ (z, z πr = (z z sin πr (z z K αβ (z, z z=z = δ αβ. (22 sin πr (z ] z cos πr (z, (23 z which can be obtained from (21 with the hep of the foowing Fourier series representations for the Dirac deta 1 1 cos πnz sin πnz cos πnz sin πnz 4 = δ(z z, (24 = δ(z z. (25
Inspection of (23 reveas K αβ (z, z r= = δ αβ. (26 which impies that the Green s function is diagona when the beams are parae. Note that the matrix (23 satisfies the condition (22. The Green s function G αβ can be expanded in terms of the eigenmodes (14 and (15 as with where the eigen-vaue is With the aid of (21, we have ( 1 G αβ (t t ; z, z = v 2 2 t g αβ (ω; z, z = dω 2π eiω(t t g αβ (ω; z, z, (27 u α n(zu β n(z, (28 λ n (ω λ n (ω = k 2 n ω2 v 2. (29 G αβ (t t ; z, z = K αβ (z, z δ(t t δ(z z. (3 One can easiy check that the constraints (4 and (5 and the boundary conditions (6 and (7 are imposed on the Green s function as and G 2α (t t ;, z tan θ 1 G 1α (t t ;, z =, (31 G 2α (t t ;, z tan θ 2 G 1α (t t ;, z =, (32 G1α (t t ;, z + tan θ 1 G2α (t t ;, z =, (33 G1α (t t ;, z + tan θ 2 G2α (t t ;, z =. (34 4 Vacuum energy The vacuum energy in terms of the Green function is given by [1] E = i 2T Tr n Gαβ (t t ; z, z. (35 Here T is (infinite time interva and Tr means TrA αβ (x, x = d 2 x tra αβ (x, x x=x, x = (t, z. (36 For the Green s function (27, with the hep of (28 and (17 we obtain the vacuum energy as E = 1 2i dω 2π 5 n (k 2n ω2. (37 v 2
By performing an Eucidean rotation ω iω and using the zeta-function reguarization we recast (37 into (see appendix A E = v 2 = v 2 = v 2 dκ n 1 = 1 + 2ζ( =, (38 [ ( n + θ 2 + κ 2] π [ ] dκ n sinh(πκ + iθ + n sinh(πκ iθ [ ] dκ n(1 e 2πκ 2iθ + n(1 e 2πκ+2iθ. (39 where κ = ω πv. Here we have negected the irreevant quadraticay divergent terms in third ine of (39 [1]. Now, to evauate the ast integras of (39 we proceed by engaging the the series expansion of the ogarithm for a given compex number Z provided that Z < 1. So, we can write n(1 Z = dκ n(1 e ±2iθ e 2πκ = = 1 2π We substitute (41 in (39 and use the identity [16] e ±2imθ m 2 Z m m. (4 1 m 2 ( cos 2mθ ± i sin 2mθ. (41 cos mx m 2 = π2 6 πx 2 + x2 4, (42 which resuts in the ground-state energy as E = = 1 12 πv cos 2mθ m 2 1 r(r 1πv 2. (43 where r = θ π. Equation (43 yieds the Lüscher potentia when the rods are parae (θ = or anti-parae (θ = π. In these two cases the string satisfies the Neumann-Neumann and Dirichet- Dirichet boundary conditions. For θ = π 2, the ends of string obey the Neumann-Dirichet boundary condition and the vacuum energy raises to its maximum vaue E = 1 πv 24 [14]. 6
A Appendix To evauate the infinite sum in the first ine of (39 we write n(n 2 r + κ 2 = n (n 2 r + κ 2 [ = n (n r + iκ where n r = n + r. Then by virtue of the formua we get (nx + y = sin ] (n r iκ. (A.1 ( πx, (A.2 y n(n 2 r + κ 2 = n sinh π(κ + ir + n sinh π(κ ir. (A.3 References [1] K. A.
