1 TORNADO 2018 MAIN LINE TOURS FROM THE A1 STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TRUST

2 Follow us on Visit: Did you know that Tornado is the first new main line steam locomotive to be built in Britain for almost 50 years? WELCOME The last of the renowned Peppercorn class A1 steam locomotives was, tragically, scrapped in But, a brand new class A1, No Tornado, was brought to life by a dedicated team of volunteers. Now we need your help to keep Tornado on the main line and pay for future overhauls - the last one cost almost 500,000. The project to build a new Peppercorn class A1 was launched in 1990 and after 18 years of planning, construction and fundraising, the 3 million locomotive was completed in August 2008 at the Trust s workshop in Darlington. Funds to build Tornado were raised through regular donations (deeds of covenant), sponsorship (principal sponsor William Cook Cast Products Limited), loans and a bond issue. Tornado recently operated at 100mph, the first steam locomotive in the UK to do so for 50 years, she also starred in the new Paddington 2 movie and in March 2018 reached 100,000 miles since completion on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. According to The Times, Tornado is a hit across the length and breadth of Britain. However, for this to continue we still need your help and you can come on board for the price of a pint of beer a week! By becoming a regular donor you can play your part in keeping Tornado on the main line and in recognition of your support, you will receive: l A special print of No Tornado by Jonathan Clay l Access to view Tornado at all reasonable times l The Trust s newsletters on a regular basis l Proportionate discount off A1SLT promoted tours l Annual Covenantor Card l The opportunity to attend the Trust s Annual Convention l The opportunity to attend days out at heritage railways l The opportunity to buy exclusive merchandise only available to Covenantors l Your name inscribed on the Roll of Honour at Darlington Locomotive Works. Together we can keep Tornado on the main line - become a covenantor today! Tornado s tenth anniversary year is underway, and it is shaping up to be this special locomotive s busiest yet. The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust is extremely proud of all that this new build steam engine has accomplished since she was completed a decade ago, and hope to continue developing steam travel for many years to come. From appearing on TV in Top Gear and on film in Paddington 2, to grabbing headlines for reaching 100mph and operating a timetabled service during the S&C plandampf, Tornado draws crowds wherever she goes and we would like to invite you to be a part of this tenth anniversary year. The 2018 tour diary promises to be our best yet, with rail journeys running country wide, allowing more people than ever to access our trains. Tornado will be hauling trains from every corner of the country offering passengers the opportunity to visit historic cities and seaside towns, crossing mountain vistas and rolling countryside also sees the start of Tornado running at 90mph where permitted, the only steam locomotive certified to do so in the UK. This makes her not only the newest, but also the fastest steam locomotive on the modern railway network. As a part of our celebrations we are delighted to be offering our birthday railtour starting in Darlington, the home of the Trust and where the engine was completed, as well as two very special anniversary circular tours. We are also marking this momentous anniversary with a luxurious Pullman train run with our friends at Belmond and we hope many of you will join us on this elegant journey to Yorkshire. Every train in this brochure is promoted by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, with all profits going directly towards keeping Tornado on the main line in future years. There is a great variety on offer in our brochure, and we hope that you will be able join us to celebrate ten years of Tornado. 6 THE MAD HATTER THE BARD OF AVON Wednesday 1 st August Tornado s Tenth Anniversary Railtour to Chester Saturday 18 th August Manchester Picadilly to Stratford-upon-Avon. James Corben Robin Coombes Tornado s tenth anniversary train will take passengers from Darlington, where the locomotive steamed out of the Works for the first time in 2008, to the beautiful city of Chester. Be a part of Tornado s history by joining the celebrations on The Mad Hatter. On the anniversary of Tornado s first public steaming, this railtour will take passengers through stunning rolling countryside to the ancient roman city. The train name reflects the Alice in Wonderland author s connection to both Cheshire, where Lewis Carroll was born, and the North East, where he lived for part of his childhood. That, and the fact that one must be a little bonkers to undertake the building of a steam locomotive let alone do it twice!* Picking up passengers at both Darlington stations, York and Wakefield Kirkgate, the outward journey will take a spectacular route via Copy Pit and Blackburn, before returning via the splendid scenery of the Hope Valley through the Peak District. CHESTER Passengers can enjoy over three hours in Chester, which provides ample time to explore the compact city centre, famed for its beautiful half-timber rowed shopping arcade. Famed as a walled city, Chester has many venues of historic interest: from the Roman amphitheatre to Chester Castle. In the summer, visitors to Chester can take time for a stroll and an ice cream by the river Dee, while the more adventurous may wish to hire a rowing boat and take in another view of the city. This railtour starts at Manchester Piccadilly, before calling to pick up passengers from Stockport, Wilmslow, Crewe and Shrewsbury. For the first time, Tornado will depart from Manchester Piccadilly station. The train will then proceed on, before picking up passengers at Stockport and Wilmslow. Passengers can enjoy the lovely Cheshire scenery as the train takes the route via Sandbach to Crewe. We then cross through the beautiful countryside of Shropshire for our final passenger pick up at the county town of Shrewsbury. From Shrewsbury, we head by way of Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street to join the Great Western Railway, where we will proceed on the scenic North Warwick Line to Stratford. Our return journey takes us on the alternative route to Birmingham via Lapworth and Solihull, before we branch off on the Sutton branch line to Walsall, and on to Wolverhampton. From there we return by way of our outward route. Offering a full day with Tornado, this train is steam hauled throughout. STRATFORD-UPON-AVON A visit to Stratford would not be complete without finding out more about the Bard that makes it famous. Shakespeare s Birthplace allows you to discover more about his early years by visiting the house where the world s most famous playwright was born and grew up. Nearby Holy Trinity church, where Shakespeare is buried, is one of the loveliest parish churches and well worth the short walk to visit. From quaint side streets with unique and individual shops to open parklands along the river, there s something for everyone. In summer, the River Avon becomes a playground for many, with boat trips affording views of the town, from beautiful riverside gardens to the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatres. 7 THE CANTERBURY TALE THE DEVONIAN Monday 27 th August Canterbury and the Dover Coast Saturday 8 th September Birmingham to Plymouth Robert Sherwood Ian Bowskill The Canterbury Tale promises to be a wonderful day trip; not only visiting one of the country s most historic cities where the sights and sounds of old England can be enjoyed, but also the beautiful journey will take the train along the foot of the iconic White Cliffs, providing passengers stunning views of the Kent coast. Canterbury bound, the train departs from Peterborough station and heads south along the East Coast Main Line, with station calls at St Neots, Stevenage and Potters Bar. After a further passenger call at Finsbury Park the train takes the steep climb up onto the North London Line with views across the large development at King s Cross - St Pancras. The train then continues out of the capital heading East towards Maidstone and Ashford, before the final leg of our outward journey to Canterbury. CANTERBURY Passengers will have around three hours to explore Canterbury, a UNESCO heritage site brimming with thousands of years of history. Today the city famous for its traditional streets and buildings, including the ancient cathedral, which provided the backdrop to Chaucer s Canterbury Tales. After a few hours in Canterbury the train embarks on its scenic return journey, heading towards Minster and taking the Junction for Dover and the Cinque Ports. The steep climb of Martin Mill Bank affords good views of Dover castle and port before our route plunges under Shakespeare s Cliff and emerges along the famous White Cliffs. Passengers will enjoy coastal views as we head back towards Ashford, picking up the outward route. In London, Tornado says goodbye and a diesel locomotive speeds the train back towards Peterborough. Peterborough 08:00hrs 22:00hrs St Neots 08:30hrs 21:30hrs Stevenage 09:15hrs 21:00hrs Potters Bar 09:40hrs 20:30hrs Finsbury Park 10:00hrs 20:10hrs First Class Dining First Class Non-Dining Join us on board The Devonian for a wonderful trip to the West Country with Tornado. Departing from Birmingham Snow Hill station our train will be hauled as far as Bristol by a Class 67 diesel locomotive. At Bristol Tornado will be waiting to take our train west, across the Somerset levels and on through Whiteball Tunnel to emerge in to the beautiful Devon countryside. After passing Exeter our train will traverse Brunel s iconic sea wall where the railway runs along the coast weaving between the beaches, through tunnels under cliffs and passed the deck chairs and the ice cream vendors. Once away from the sea, our route heads in land and here Tornado will be working close to its maximum as we climb over the fearsome South Devon Banks, a legacy from Brunel s Atmospheric Railway. After such hard climbing we traverse over viaducts on the sinuous route through the picturesque landscape before descending into the Naval city of Plymouth. PLYMOUTH Passengers have around three hours to enjoy the history of the area where, on Plymouth Hoe, Sir Francis Drake spied the Spanish Armada, or perhaps a visit to the Barbican area to see the original passenger list for Pilgrim Father s ship The Mayflower on which they set out for the New World. By the harbour are wonderful places to have a drink or something to eat amongst the Tudor and Jacobean buildings and old Dockside warehouses that give the area so much character. Our return journey retraces our route and soon after departure includes the challenging climbs of Hemerdon and Dainton banks before we once again skirt Brunel s sea wall as the sun starts to set. After climbing to Whiteball Tunnel, and dashing down passed the spot where City of Truro achieved 100mph in 1904, we cruise across the Somerset levels and back to Bristol. Tornado will haul our train throughout the return from Plymouth to Birmingham. 8 Did you know... l Tornado was completed at Darlington Locomotive Works in 2008 after 18 years of fundraising and construction. l The construction cost 3.3m, all of which was paid for by public donations and corporate sponsorship of the project. Most donations came in at 5 each month, which was equivalent to the price of a pint a week! Beer was a little cheaper back then! l Tornado weighs 166 tons (168.8 tonnes). l Tornado s maximum speed is 100mph, which was achieved in testing for 90mph running in April For limited trains on the East Coast Main Line, Tornado is planned to run at 90mph. The general limit for steam on the main line is 75 mph. l Tornado s driving wheels measure 6ft 8in in diameter-taller than an average door frame! l The maximum boiler pressure is 250lb/sq in. l There are over three miles of electrical cabling on Tornado. l At full power, the coal burning in Tornado s 50 sq ft firebox has an output equivalent to 11,000 2kw kettles all operating at the same time! l Tornado has a tractive effort (pulling power) of 37,397lb (166.38kN), and produces around 2,500 horsepower at 65mph. l The maximum practical range with a full tender tank (6,200 gallons) is over 110 miles, Tornado would then need to stop for water. THE YNYS MÔN EXPRESS Saturday 29 th September A day out in North Wales Geoff Griffiths Keeping Tornado Steaming... l To keep Tornado running on the national network, it costs around 150,000 per year, including operational and maintenance costs. l On an typical railtour, Tornado burns coal at approximately one tonne per hour and for each mile, she boils roughly 40 gallons (around a bath tub!) of water. l In a year Tornado burns over 200 tonnes of coal, costing around 50,000 alone, along with a 25,000 water bill! The Ynys Môn Express offers passengers a wonderful day out to North Wales. With options to explore all that this area has to offer: from mountain scenery, to seascapes and medieval castles, there is sure to be something of interest on this railtour. LLANDUDNO In North Wales there are several destinations to choose from. For passengers alighting at Llandudno Junction there will be a short coach connection to nearby Llandudno. Here you can visit the popular Victorian sea side resort, complete with pier and arcades, or else scale the Great Orme (via the Tramway, of course!) and take in the views from this astonishing coastal landmark. There is an off train excursion to visit the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway available from Llandudno Junction. For those wishing to travel further into Wales with Tornado, passengers can visit the beautiful city of Caernarfon, with its imposing Castle, by way of a coach connection from Bangor station. The train will then continue on to its final destination of Holyhead. FFESTINIOG AND WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAY From Llandudno Junction, join us on a grand circular tour of the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways. After a coach journey to Blaenau Ffestiniog we join the world s oldest narrow gauge train to Porthmadog. This is a spectacular journey across descending 700ft through the Welsh mountains and then the Cob causeway for a lunch break in Porthmadog. After lunch we board our Welsh Highland train and head via the stunning Aberglasyn Pass for Caernarfon and a short bus connection to Bangor where passengers will rejoin The Ynys Môn Express. This is a stunning way to view Snowdonia. A fare of 40 per person applies to this option. 9 THE AULD REEKIE THE CHRISTMAS BORDER RAIDER Sunday 7 th October Yorkshire to Edinburgh Saturday 1 st December A festive trip on the Settle & Carlisle Railway Join us for another popular tour featuring both Tornado and Deltic Alycidon as we travel to the Scottish Capital from Yorkshire. This tour offers over 250 miles of steam on the outward journey followed by high speed running with the Deltic on the return. Tornado will be at the head of the train as we depart Doncaster and hauls a train for the first time to Wakefield Westgate and Leeds. Our final pick up is York before we set out for a stunning run along the East Coast Main Line. We pass Darlington, birthplace of Tornado, and the majestic sight of Durham Cathedral greets us soon after. Once we pass the Angel of the North and cross over the Tyne at Newcastle, we speed north taking in spectacular views of Lindisfarne and delightful Alnmouth. Our train slows for the crossing of the majestic Royal Border Bridge before we enter Scotland and run along the cliff tops where, if lucky, there may be seals on the rocks below. We then pass stunning countryside and castles before sweeping through the suburbs into the centre of Scotland s capital. Our return journey is powered by Deltic Alycidon throughout. With much opportunity to run up to 100mph this impressive locomotive will speed us back south via our outward route and stations. EDINBURGH Edinburgh is Scotland's compact, hilly capital. Packed with medieval tenements, narrow wynds of the Old Town and the sweeping elegance of the Georgian New Town, there is no question that Edinburgh deserves its reputation as one of the most stunning and enthralling cities in the world. With a plethora of world-class visitor attractions, sightseeing in Edinburgh is pretty easy. From the world famous Castle to the 17 th century Royal Palace at Holyrood, or shopping in Princes Street there is something for everyone. Furthermore, on arrival in Carlisle the Christmas Market will be in full swing - perfect for buying your gifts, or just enjoying the great food and drink they have on offer. Tornado will be at the head of our train throughout as we travel via Stafford, Crewe and Blackburn before heading north and on to the famous Settle and Carlisle Railway itself. The route is known as the Long Drag because of the heavy gradients all the way to Ribblehead Viaduct and Blea Moor Tunnel. We will soar over high viaducts and plunge through deep cuttings as we head through the wild landscape for Carlisle. Passengers have over two hours to enjoy Carlisle, where the station is close to the Cathedral and nearby pedestrian shopping area for the Christmas Market. Tornado will then lead us back, taking the direct route along the edge of the Lake District via Shap Summit and on to Lancaster and Preston. Here Tornado takes water before regaining our outward route and returning us to the West Midlands covering over 400 miles, all by steam. 10 THE NORTH BRITON Saturday 9 th February A special trip on the Settle & Carlisle line Follow us on Gareth Griffiths Come along and enjoy the experience of No Tornado climbing to Blea Moor and Ais Gill summits once again! Eminent railway engineers of the age proclaimed that it would be impossible to build a main line railway through this hostile terrain. Some of the tunnels and viaducts took a full five years to build and many of the railway navvies lost their lives in this inhospitable place. Building the Settle & Carlisle almost broke the Midland Railway but determination was rewarded with a magnificent double-track main line railway sweeping through the hills. A Class 67 locomotive will take the train from Leicester to Doncaster where Tornado will take over for the journey via Leeds and the picturesque Aire Valley through Keighley. The terrain becomes increasingly wild and rugged as we approach Settle Junction, start of the fearsome Long Drag through Horton-in- Ribblesdale to Ribblehead Viaduct and Blea Moor. One fine sight follows another as we continue to Ais Gill then descend through the Eden Valley and into the Border City of Carlisle. Here we take a break of over two hours; the station is right in the heart of the compact city, close to the cathedral and the attractive pedestrianised shopping quarter. Still with Tornado in charge we now head east, crossing England at its narrowest point, glimpsing Hexham Abbey then descending through the valley of the Upper Tyne. At Tyne Yard, just south of Newcastle close by the Angel of the North, we bid farewell to Tornado and the Class 67 diesel takes over again for our journey via Durham and York to Doncaster and as outwards to Leicester. With your support, 2018 will see No wheeled, the cylinder block ordered, progress on the tender frames and tank along with a considerable amount of design work on the valve gear and electrical equipment. We still need to raise 5m to complete new Gresley class P2 No Prince of Wales. YOU can help to make this a reality sooner rather than later.
