1 CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR'S OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES CAL OES CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE PROTECTION CAL FIRE California Joint Incident Briefing 7/4/28 4: hours Weather Report - Northern Region *** High risk for gusty south afternoon winds and low relative humidity for the far eastside and northeast Predictive Service Areas today through Friday and for the Sacramento Valley today only *** The main focus near term will be increasing southerly winds ahead of a vigorous offshore trough. The trough should relax its grip on the area during the weekend and allow a Four Corners high to strengthen and build northward into next week. This means developing hot conditions. Monsoonal thunderstorms could be in play late next week favoring the eastside. Gusty southerly winds will develop this afternoon across northeast California and the far eastside Predictive Service Areas as well as the middle and upper portions of the Sacramento Valley Predictive Service Area. General gusts should range between 25-3 mph although some locations within Shasta Valley should experience gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity values will range between 5-25% within the windier areas although trend much higher near the coast and within the Delta Region. Similar southerly wind speeds are expected Thursday and Friday across northeast California and the far eastside Predictive Service Areas while speeds within the Sacramento Valley should lower slightly. Humidity values should trend slightly lower Thursday and Friday although remain high along the coast and inland coastal areas. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms over the Modoc Plateau and Lassen Area late Friday as a result of some movement of the offshore trough. As mentioned above, a Four Corners high should become well asserted during the weekend and provide a warming and ultimately drying trend. One out of three extended ensemble models is showing a secondary trough passage early next week but confidence is low. Weather Report - Southern Region ***Very hot and dry Friday and Saturday over Southern California*** ***Sundowner winds expected across Santa Barbara County Friday into Saturday*** ***Isolated thunderstorms starting Friday and continuing into much of next week*** Strong high pressure over the Central and Eastern United States will build westward towards California in the coming days resulting in a significant heat wave across the southern portions of the state. The hottest weather will be Friday when the inland valleys south of Point Conception will be in the 6 to 2 range. To complicate matters, gusty sundowner winds will occur across Santa Barbara County Friday into Saturday morning, with isolated thunderstorms starting Friday across the southern mountains and deserts. Increasing subtropical moisture will help to expand the threat of thunderstorm activity to include the Sierra this weekend. Temperatures will lower a little over the district and humidity values will increase from the expected minimums in the single digits and teens on Friday. However, it will continue to be hot with daytime highs above normal for early July. Some of the anticipated convection could initially be dry Friday and Saturday, becoming wetter by Sunday. Daytime highs will continue to be above normal through at least the middle part of next week with a continued threat of thunderstorms (mainly wet) across the mountains and deserts, including the Sierra.
