Its uses three-second gusts estimated at the point of damage based on a judgment of 8 levels of damage to the 28 indicators listed below. These estimates vary with height and exposure. Important: The 3 second gust is not the same wind as in standard surface observations. Standard measurements are taken by weather stations in open exposures, using a directly measured, "one minute mile" speed. 5 SKYWARN NET ACTIVATED: With the announcement of a tornado watch from NOAA weather in Negaunee, our local SKYWARN was activated by Geo., W8FWG on Sunday evening, Mach 25, 2007 at 2000 hours EDT. While there was no actual tornado sighted in our 5-county area, we had 17 check-ins from all 5 counties who provided wind, rain and hail information to the bureau in Negaunee. Howard, KD8ABP filled in for George while he (W8FWG) was in direct contact via ham radio and E- Spotter methods with the weather bureau. Our SKYWARN membership list provided invaluable information and was passed on to amateurs at WX8MQT, and our thanks to Greg, KI8AF, who operated right from the weather bureau s ham station, WX8MQT. This event proved the need for some updating to our records, and this was accomplished the same night. Our thanks to all of the amateurs who checked into the net, especially to KI8AF, who worked with us from 2000 to 2140 when the net was deactivated. There was no damage reports sent in, due to this tornado watch. A Watch means conditions were favorable for the formation of a tornado. We are thankful it never happened! NEWS RELEASE: The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) announced on March 25, 2007 of the receipt of funding for seven new Weather Radio Transmitters. One in Alaska, one in North Dakota, one in Nebraska, two in Virginia, one in Tennessee and one right here in Upper Michigan, in Gogebic County. The Gogebic grant money was $71,642.This funding will provide for a new NWR (NOAA Weather radio) transmitter in Marenisco, in Western Upper Michigan, providing new coverage for the counties of Gogebic and Ontonagon. The NWS anticipates the new service to start this summer. (2007). GOVERNOR S DECLARATION: Governor Jennifer Granholm has issued an executive declaration in observance of Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 25 th through the 31 st, in conjunction with the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness and the National Weather Service offices serving Michigan.
