1 of Cold Weather Injuries in, - of Cold Weather Injuries, Forty-nine cold weather injuries (CWIs) were reported in, representing a % increase from the CWIs reported in November and a 7% increase in the average (n=9) from -. There were no significant differences* between average freezing peripheral injuries and hypothermia cases reported during previous months in - and the number of these types of CWIs reported in. However, there was a significantly higher number of non-freezing peripheral injuries reported in when compared to the average number of these types of injuries reported in previous months during -. also had the highest number of non-freezing peripheral injuries (n=); this was three times more than the average (μ =.) during -. During, Junior-enlisted (JE) Service Members (SMs) had the highest number of CWIs (n=), followed by Senior-Enlisted (SE) SMs (n=), and Commissioned Officers (COs) (n=). JE SMs, SE SMs, and COs all experienced freezing peripheral (n=, n=, n=, respectively) in. However, no CO experienced non-freezing peripheral injuries, while enlisted SMs did (n=). Six cases of hypothermia were reported in and all occurred among JE SMs. Additionally, JE SMs accounted for all hospitalizations (n=) due to CWIs in, and both hospitalizations were due to non-freezing peripheral injuries. In, there have been a total of 39 cases, with freezing peripheral injuries being the most common type of CWI (n=). Although increases in non-freezing peripheral injuries may be due to a true increase in cases, they may also reflect improvements in CWI training which result in heightened awareness among Soldiers and leaders to seek medical care. CWIs tend to cluster during field exercises in cold weather conditions. If more field exercises were conducted in, this may explain the increase in cases seen in vs. prior years. More investigation would be needed to evaluate the possible contribution of field exercises to these CWIs. *Significant difference: greater than or equal to two standard deviations above or below the mean.
