2 PREFACE The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Bangalore, has brought out the report on Progress of South-West Monsoon Rainfall 2014 covering all the 176 taluks in Karnataka. This report contains the details of taluk and district wise occurrence of rainfall during South-West Monsoon season from June to September This report was prepared by Smt. Sumathi, Assistant Director, Sri M.S.Vasanthaiah & Sri H.Raju Asst Statistical Officers under the over all guidance of Sri M.N.Chakari Deputy Director and Sri K.Narayana, Joint Director of ARC Division. 3 PROGRESS OF SOUTH-WEST MONSOON IN KARNATAKA I. Introduction : The normal date of onset of South-west monsoon in Karnataka is 1 st June. This year the monsoon was set on 9 th June, in coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka.Further, the entire state was covered by 20 th June in state. The rainfall during the four months (June to September) of the current monsoon season accounts for around 71 per cent of the annual rainfall which plays a major contributor to drinking water, water for agricultural purposes and for power generation. II. Rainfall profile in the State : The actual rainfall precipitation during 2014 was 827 mm which was one percent more than the normal rainfall of 821 mm, falls under Normal category. Among the districts, there was Excess rainfall in 6 districts, viz., Chitradurga,Shimoga,Mysore,Koppal,Gadag & Haveri.Where as it was normal in 19 districts viz., Bangalore urban, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagar, Davanagere, Tumkur, Charajamanagar, Chikkamagular, DakshinaKannada, Hassan,Kodagu, Mandya, Udupi, Bellary, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bagalkote,Belgaum, Dharwad, and Uttar Kannada. Deficit in the remaining 5 districts viz., Kolar, Chickballapur,Bidar,Yadgir, & Bijapur. It is evident from the spatial and temporal distribution of month wise rainfall that, 52 taluks in June, 113 taluks in July, 150 taluks in August and 90 taluks in September will fall either under excess or normal category. Pertaining to the rainfall distribution among 176 taluks, the table given below illustrates the contrasting picture between the current and the previous year. 4 Nearly 41 taluks in the state received excess rainfall in the current South-west monsoon season when compared to the previous year there was 57 taluks. However, normal rainfall had occurred in 98 taluks during this year, where as in 108 taluks during the previous year. However, the number of taluks that had deficit rainfall was nearly 34 taluks during this year as against 11 taluks during the previous year and only 3 taluks had scanty rainfall in the current year. While classifying the rainfall in the zone wise, nearly 8 zones had normal rainfall viz., North Eastern Dry Zone, Northern Dry Zone, Central Dry Zone, Eastern Dry Zone, Southern Dry Zone, South Transitional Zone, North Transitional Zone & Coastal Zone. Deficit rainfall in North Eastern Transitional Zone. Scanty rainfall in Hilly Zone.

6 DISTRICT REVIEW BANGALORE DIVISION : 1. Bangalore Urban: of September The rainfall in the district during the months of June it was excess, Normal in the month and it was deficit in July & August. The overall seasonal average rainfall recorded was 414 mm, i.e., 14 percent less than the normal rainfall of 481 mm and fall under normal category. The seasonal rainfall among 4 taluks in the district, shows that one taluk each had excess and normal and in the remaining 2 taluks had deficit rainfall. 2. Bangalore Rural: During the month of August the rainfall was excess, normal in June & September, where as in the month of July it was deficit. The total rainfall during the season was 481 mm, 7 percent more than the normal rainfall of 452 mm and which fall under the normal category. Among the 4 taluks in the district, 2 taluks each had excess and deficit during the season. 3. Chitradurga: The rainfall during the month of August, was excess, where as it was and deficit in months of June, July and September. The rainfall in the district for the season was 376 mm which is 28 percent more than the normal of 294 mm and will fall under the excess category. Among 6 taluks in the district, 5 taluks had excess rainfall and one taluk had normal rainfall during the season. 4. Davanagere: In this district, rainfall was excess in the month of June & whereas, it was deficit in July, August & September. The total seasonal rainfall was 338 mm which was 12 per cent more compared to the normal rainfall of 384 mm and which falls under normal category for the season. Among 6 taluks in the district, 4 taluks received normal rainfall & in the remaining 2 taluks deficit rainfall during the season. The number of dry spell weeks varied between 2 to 8 weeks in all the taluks.

7 5. Kolar: This district experienced excess rainfall in the month of August, deficit in June July and september. The average rainfall in the district was 309 mm, less by 21 per cent as against the normal rainfall of 390 mm and which falls under deficit category. Out of 5 taluks in the district,2 taluks received normal and 3 taluks received deficit rainfall. 6. Shimoga: During the month of June, August and September the rainfall was excess, deficit in July. The district s average rainfall for the season was 1822 mm which was 24 per cent more than the normal rainfall of 1472 mm and fall under excess category. Out of 7 taluks in the district, the rainfall was excess in 4 taluks and normal in 3 taluks. 7. Tumkur: In this district, the rainfall was excess in the month of June, normal in the months of August and September, deficit in the month of July. The overall rainfall was normal since, the actual was 426 mm which was 12 per cent more than the normal rainfall of 381 mm. Out of 10 taluks in the district, 4 taluks received excess rainfall and 5 taluks had normal rainfall, and the remaining one taluk had deficit rainfall. 8. Ramanagara: In this district, the rainfall in the months of August & September it was normal, in June it was deficit and scanty in the month of July. The average rainfall of the district for the entire season was found to be normal, as actual rainfall was 430 mm, which was 5 per cent less than the normal rainfall of 454 mm. All the 4 taluks had excess rainfall in the district. 9. Chikballapura: In this district, the rainfall in the months of August and September it was normal, deficit in the month of June and scanty in the month of July. The overall rainfall was deficit since, the actual rainfall was 236 mm which is 43 per cent less than the normal rainfall of 411 mm. Out of 6 taluks in the district, 4 taluks received deficit and 2 taluks received scanty rainfall.

8 MYSORE DIVISION : 10. Chamrajanagar: The rainfall in the month of August it was excess, deficit in June & july, September had scanty rainfall. The average rainfall of the district for the entire season was found to be normal, as actual rainfall was 277 mm, which is 17 percent less than the normal of 333 mm. Among 4 taluks in the district, one taluk each had excess, normal,deficit & scanty. 11. Chickmagalur: In this district, there was excess rainfall in the month of August. Deficti in the month of June, July and September. The seasonal rainfall received in the district was 1684 mm, 11 percent more than the normal of 1519 mm and falls under the normal category. Regarding 7 taluks in the district excess in 2 taluks and normal in 5 taluks. 12. Dakshina Kannada: In this coastal district, in the month of September it was excess, normal in August and deficit in the months of June & July. The district s average rainfall during monsoon season was 2886 mm, which was 14 percent less when compared with the normal rainfall of 3347 mm, which falls under normal category. Among 5 taluks in the district, 4 taluks received normal rainfall and remaining one received deficit rainfall. 13. Hassan: The district rainfall was excess in months of August & September, and it was deficit in June and July. As for the season it was normal rainfall of 602 mm, the actual was 701 mm which was 17 percent more. Among 8 taluks in the district, the seasonal rainfall was excess in 2 taluks, and in the remaining 6 taluks it was normal rainfall. 14. Kodagu: In this Malnad district, there was excess rainfall in the month of September, normal in August & deficit in June and July. The district s average seasonal rainfall was 2366 mm, 10 percent more when compared to the normal rainfall of 2159 mm, heading the district to wards under the normal category. Among 3 taluks in the district one taluks had excess rainfall and 2 taluks had normal rainfall.

9 15. Mandya: The rainfall during the month of September it was excess, while in the month of June it was normal, where as in July and August it was deficit. The overall seasonal rainfall shows that as against the normal rainfall of 303 mm, the actual rainfall was 297 mm which was 2 percent less than the normal which falls under normal category. Out of 7 taluks in the district, one taluks had excess and normal rainfall in the remaining 6 taluks for the season. 16. Mysore : In this district, the rainfall was excess during the months of August and September, it was deficit in June & July. The overall seasonal rainfall was 436 mm, 21 percent more than the normal of 360 mm and fall under excess category. Among 7 taluks in the district, 3 taluks had excess rainfall, normal in 3 taluks and deficit in remaining one taluk. 17. Udupi : In this coastal district, rainfall was excess during the month of August, normal in the month of September and deficit in the months of June and July. The district got an average rainfall of 3087 mm, as against the normal rainfall of 3682 mm, showing 16 percent less, which falls under the normal category. Among 3 taluks in the districts one taluk recorded normal rainfall and in the remaining 2 taluks, the rainfall was deficit. GULBARGA DIVISION: 18. Bellary: In this district, the rainfall was normal in the month of August and deficit in the month of June, July & September. The average rainfall during the season was found to be normal in this district, since the actual rainfall was 369 mm, less by 5 percent to the normal rainfall of 386 mm. Out of 7 taluks, excess in one taluk and in the remaining 6 taluks received normal rainfall. 19. Bidar: The Rainfall during the month of August it was excess, deficit in July and September, but in June it was scanty. This district as a whole the average rainfall was 500 mm, 27 percent less than the normal rainfall of 686 mm, falling under the deficit category. Out of the 5 taluks in this district, one taluk had normal and in the remaining 4 taluks had deficit rainfall.

10 20. Gulbarga: In the month of August it was excess, deficit in the months of July and September, Scanty in the month of June. The seasonal rainfall of the district is Normal, the actual rainfall was 519 mm, which is 17percent less than the normal rainfall of 622 mm. Out of 7 taluks in the district, normal rainfall in 3 taluks and in 4 taluks it was deficit rainfall. 21. Yadgir In the month of August it was excess, deficit in the month of July and September and scanty in the month of June. The seasonal rainfall of the district is deficit, as the actual rainfall was 440 mm, and the normal rainfall is 611 mm which shows that 28 percent less than the normal. Out of 3 taluks in the district, normal rainfall in one taluk and deficit rainfall in 2 taluks. 22. Koppal: In the month of August it was excess, normal in June and July and deficit in September. For the season as a whole it was excess. The actual rainfall was 473 mm, indicating 23 percent more than the normal rainfall of 385 mm. Among the 4 taluks in the district, 2 taluks each had excess and normal rainfall. 23. Raichur: The rainfall during the month of August it was excess, scanty in July & deficit in the month of September. The seasonal rainfall was 492 mm, 4 percent more when compared to the normal of 472 mm which fall under normal category. Out of 5 taluks in the district, 2 taluks had excess and other 3 taluks had normal rainfall. BELGAUM DIVISION: 24. Bagalkote district: During the month of August it was excess, deficit during June, July & September. The seasonal rainfall in this district is found to be normal as it received 358 mm, one percent less than the normal of 360 mm. Out of 6 taluks in this district all the taluks received normal rainfall.

11 25. Belgaum: In this district rainfall was excess in the month of August, deficit during June and September and scanty during July. The average seasonal rainfall was 570 mm, 2 percent more than the normal rainfall of 560 mm, thus coming under the normal category. Among the 10 taluks, 4 taluks got excess and 6 taluks had normal rainfall. 26. Bijapur: In this district during August it was excess, deficit in July, Scanty in June and September. The overall district rainfall for the season was 319 mm, 27 percent less than the normal rainfall of 436 mm, which fall under the deficit category. Among 5 taluks in the district, 2 taluk had normal and 3 taluks had deficit rainfall. 27. Dharwad: The district had excess rainfall in the month of August, normal in September, Scanty during June and July. The seasonal rainfall was normal, the actual rainfall received was 512 mm, being 6 percent more compared to the normal of 484 mm. Out of 5 taluks in the district, all the 5 taluks had normal rainfall during the season. 28. Gadag: During the months of July and August the rainfall was excess and deficit during June and September. The seasonal rainfall was excess, the actual rainfall received was 471 mm, being 28 percent more than the normal rainfall of 368 mm. Among 5 taluks in the district, 2 taluks got excess and 3 taluks had normal rainfall. 29. Haveri: The district had excess rainfall in August, normal during September and deficit in June and July. The overall seasonal rainfall is excess, since the actual rainfall received was 668 mm, which is 35 percent more when compared to the normal of 495 mm. Out of 7 taluks in the district, 5 taluks received excess rainfall and 2 taluks had normal rainfall. 30. Uttara Kannada: In this coastal district, rainfall was excess in the month of August, normal rainfall in September and deficit during the months of June and July. The average rainfall received in the district was 2585 mm, 2 percent more than that of the normal rainfall of 2539 mm and which fall under the normal category. Out of 11 taluks in the district one taluk had excess and in the remaining 10 taluks the rainfall was normal. ***********************
