1 Hurricane Preparedness Florida is the hurricane capital of the United States and no matter where you live in the Sunshine State, you are vulnerable to the effects of a hurricane. Now is the time to make preparations so that you can protect yourself and your family in the event that a storm threatens your home. Included in this preparedness packet is the important information you should know to help keep you and your family prepared and out of harm s way when a hurricane is headed your way. HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS JUNE 1 ST AND ENDS NOVEMBER 30 TH. GET A PLAN: It is important for you to know what to do in case of an emergency. Your plan of action details who does what, where you will go, and what you will take along. Determine your destination for evacuation (relative s/friend s, public shelter, hotel/motel) and what transportation you will need to get there. Register those in your family who need special assistance with the local Special Needs Registry. If you have a pet, register them at a pet-friendly shelter.
