1 Hurricane Preparedness Florida is the hurricane capital of the United States and no matter where you live in the Sunshine State, you are vulnerable to the effects of a hurricane. Now is the time to make preparations so that you can protect yourself and your family in the event that a storm threatens your home. Included in this preparedness packet is the important information you should know to help keep you and your family prepared and out of harm s way when a hurricane is headed your way. HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS JUNE 1 ST AND ENDS NOVEMBER 30 TH. GET A PLAN: It is important for you to know what to do in case of an emergency. Your plan of action details who does what, where you will go, and what you will take along. Determine your destination for evacuation (relative s/friend s, public shelter, hotel/motel) and what transportation you will need to get there. Register those in your family who need special assistance with the local Special Needs Registry. If you have a pet, register them at a pet-friendly shelter. Prepare an emergency supply kit and go bag. Familiarize yourself with your local channels of communication where you can stay up to date with hurricane information. At A.H. of Monroe County, Inc., we have a Hurricane Preparedness Plan that will assist you with your preparations and needs. IF YOU LIVE IN ANY OF THE A.H. HOUSING PROPERTIES YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO EVACUATE THE FACILITY WHEN THERE IS A COUNTY-WIDE MANDATORY EVACUATION. Prior to any hurricane emergency, you will have a set preparedness plan in place with your Medical Case Manager (MCM) or Housing Case Manager (HCM) this will be completed via a detailed conversation and documented. o MCM/HCMs will assist with applying for the Monroe County Special Needs Registry for evacuation, if indicated. o MCM/HCMs will assist with any transportation needs prior to an evacuation. During a hurricane emergency, you will be contacted or visited by a Medical Case Manager, an Intensive Case Manager, or Housing Case Manager from the Agency who will assist you in carrying out your emergency hurricane plan. EVACUATION INFORMATION: Know where you will be evacuating to and how you will get there. For hurricane categories 1 and 2, the Monroe County shelters that will open are: o Key West High School 2100 Flagler St., Key West FL o Sugarloaf School MM Crane Blvd., Sugarloaf Key, FL o Marathon High School 350 Sombrero Rd., Marathon FL o Coral Shores High School MM Overseas Hwy., Plantation Key, FL MONROE COUNTY SHELTERS WILL NOT OPEN IN CATEGORY 3, 4, OR 5 HURRICANES, SO YOU WILL NEED TO GO TO THE MAINLAND OUT-OF-COUNTY SHELTER.

If possible, it is recommended to have a 14-day supply. 3 o For Residents: o For Visitors: KEYS PET INFORMATION: Requirements for evacuating with pets o Pre-register pets with pet-friendly shelters/monroe County Special Needs Registry. o Provide proof of residency within evacuation zone. o Present medical and current vaccination records for EACH pet. Annual rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs and visible Monroe County dog license are required. Pet shelter rules o Proper ID collar and current rabies tag. o Proper ID on all pet belongings. o Pet must remain contained in an approved carrier. o During scheduled animal relief times, pets must be on a leash or harness. o Pet food, water, and bowls must be brought. Animal supplies checklist o Medications, medical and vaccination records. o Proper identification, collar, and tags. o Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and carriers. o Newspapers, plastic bags, cat litter/pan, and cleaners for pet waste. o Food, water, and bowls (2-week supply). o Bed and/or toys to keep pets calm and happy during stressful time. o Current photos (in case animal gets lost). o Information on feeding schedule, medical conditions, behavior problems, and name/number of veterinarian. Pets accepted at pet-friendly shelters: dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats, guinea pigs, small rabbits (under 10 lbs.), ferrets, and birds. WATCHES AND WARNINGS INFORMATION: Tropical system hazards come in many forms, including storm surge, high winds, tornadoes, and flooding. The National Hurricane Center will issue tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings. Tropical Storm Watch: Sustained winds of mph are possible within specified coastal area within 48 hours. Tropical Storm Warning: Sustained winds of mph are expected within the specified coastal area within 36 hours. Hurricane Watch: Sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are possible somewhere within the specified coastal area Issued 48 hours in advance. Hurricane Warning: Sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected somewhere within the specified coastal area Issued 36 hours in advance. EMERGENCY EVACUATION BUS PICK-UP STOPS: Monroe County Emergency Management will activate specific bus pick-up stops along US 1 Highway as directed by the Monroe County Sheriff Office. It is the responsibility of the residents to get to the designated pick-up sites, nearest to you. Evacuation zones are predetermined. The buses used will only travel between the Emergency Evacuation sites and the hurricane shelter out of the county, and will display EMERGENCY EVACUATION.
