4 Current Projects at ESO include the VLT, ALMA and the E-ELT VLT ALMA E-ELTELT The VLT is the world s ALMA will be a single mm E-ELT will be a nextgeneration most advanced visible & IR observatory Four 8.2m telescopes and sub-mm telescope. 66 antennas of up to 12m diameter IR & optical telescope. Segmented 42m primary Four movable 1.8m auxiliary telescopes Telescopes can be coupled as an interferometer Based at the Paranal Observatory (Chile) antennas movable over 16km distances ALMA is being built in an international i collaboration between ESO, US and Japan Construction phase underway (c. 1bn) mirror Adaptive optics on telescope & instruments Construction phase expected to start in 2012 Total budget c. 1bn
