1 Spy Kids II The Case of the Missing Numbers Welcome back, Spy Kid! Another case has just been reported to headquarters. Are you ready to help solve the Case of the Missing Numbers? Let s get started!! The Story Betty Bat has just reported that her bat cave is missing all of its numbers. Read her Fact File and finish the following pages to solve this case. Good luck, Spy Kid! 1. All of the numbers in Betty s bat cave seem to have disappeared. 2. Nothing else in the cave seems to be missing. 3. The letters I, C, X, V, L, M, and D are scattered all over the house. 4. No lower case letters have been found. 5. Betty left the cave at 10 p.m., and the numbers were there when she left. 6. Betty returned home at 7:00 a.m. (Remember, bats are nocturnal--they sleep during the day and hunt for food at night.) 7. Betty lives alone. 8. The plumber, Patty Parrot, fixed a clogged sink on the night in question. 9. Richard Raccoon installed a new satellite dish on the same night. 10. No one else had access to the cave. 11. The clock now reads IV: XXX. Even the TV channels are letters instead of numbers. 12. The only clue left by the intruder was a note with these strange words on it: slaremun namor.
2 Answer the questions about the fact report. 1. Whose cave was broken into? 2. What time did she return? 3. Who fixed a clogged sink on the night in question? 4. What was found scattered all over the cave? 5. What did Richard Raccoon install? 6. What else was missing? 7. The intruder left behind a. 8. What kind of letters were found? 9. Why was Betty out all night? 10. Does Betty live alone?
3 An adjective describes a person, place, or thing. Size, color, and number words are adjectives. Use your imagination to help Betty describe her bat cave. Betty s cave is. Her door is. She has a sofa. Betty has televisions. Her walls are. Betty s kitchen is. She has rooms in her cave. Three pictures are in her living room. She has a fish for a pet. A proper noun is the NAME of a noun (Betty and Rome are proper nouns) A common noun is a person, place or thing. Circle the common nouns. A bat is a mammal. Bats are nocturnal animals. Bats eat insects. Most bats use their ears for echolocation (finding things by listening to the sounds that bounce off of them). Bats hang upside down by their feet. Bats can live in caves or trees.
4 All of the numbers in Betty s bat cave disappeared. How will she know when it s time to go hunting, or count the insects for her recipes, or anything?? Write about what it would be like to live in a world without numbers. If you need more space to write, attach another sheet of paper to this one.
5 Betty has just gotten a letter. It s in the same handwriting as the letter from the intruder. The letter is hard to read: It is full of mistakes! You will find four punctuation mistakes, five spelling mistakes, and four capitalization mistakes. Help solve the case by editing the letter. Make your corrections on the lines below each sentence. Dear betty? _ Did you lik the letters i left in your cave. the Romans wood feel at home now You dont need numbers to tell tim or read the calendar? Don t worry. I well bring back the numbers tomorrow. Until then, remember the clue I left: slaremun namor. use a mirror on the clue to help you understand.
6 The letter from the mystery intruder mentioned ROME. Let s learn about the Roman Empire to see if will help us solve this case. Read the passage below and answer the questions. The Roman Empire The Roman Empire was one of the largest civilizations that ever existed. For much of the time, the empire was peaceful. It had a legal system and a strong army, until it fell to the barbarians in the year 476. The Empire was large because it had a lot of land. Lands were taken by force by Roman soldiers, and then made into cities. Soldiers and other people built a mother city in each land. The capital city of all of the Roman Empire was Rome. A network of paved roads connected every city to Rome. An excellent army made the Roman Empire a success. Soldiers were put into 30 units. Each unit had over five thousand soldiers. These units were called legions. Each legion was given a name and number. Roman law was generally fair and just. Many of the laws we use today came from the Romans. The first Roman laws were called the Twelve Tables (of 450 B.C.). The language spoken in the western part of the Empire was Latin. Greek was spoken in the eastern part. Roman numerals I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X were used by the Romans to count. The Romans used seven letters to express all of the numbers. These letters were I, V, X, L, C, D, & M. The combination of a letter and its position represented a number. Romans were good at constructing huge buildings, such as the coliseum. Roman citizens liked entertainment. Gladiators were trained to fight wild animals or each other in these coliseums. Romans even had ways to have hot and cold running water in bath houses and rich homes.

9 Roman Numerals I 1 V 5 X 10 L 50 C 100 D 500 M 1000 The Romans used only seven letters to express all their numbers. This combination of a letter and its position could be used to represent any number. If you think that is an awesome feat, you are correct. The easiest way to note down a number is to make that many tally marks - little I's. Thus I means 1, II means 2, III means 3. However, four strokes seemed like too many... So the Romans moved on to the symbol for 5 - V. Placing a I in front of the V (or placing any smaller number in front of any larger number) indicates subtraction. In other words, IV means V (5) minus I (1), or 4. Placing a number in front of another means addition. VI means V (5) plus I (1), or 6, VII means 7, VIII means 8. X means 10. But wait what about 9? It s the same idea: IX means to subtract I from X, leaving 9. Numbers in the teens, twenties, and thirties follow the same form as the first set, only with Xs indicating the number of tens. So XXXI is 31, and XXIV is 24. L means 50. Based on what you've learned, I bet you can figure out what 40 is. If you guessed XL, you're right = 10 subtracted from 50. And thus 60, 70, and 80 are LX, LXX and LXXX. C stands for centum, the Latin word for 100. We still use this in words like cent (1/100 of a dollar) and century (100 years). The subtraction rule means 90 is written as XC. Like the Xs and Ls, the Cs are tacked on to the beginning of numbers to indicate how many hundreds there are: CCCLXIX is 369. D stands for 500. As you can probably guess by this time, CD means 400. So CDXLVIII is 448. M is 1,000. You can see a lot of Ms used as numbers even today, because Roman numerals are used for a lot of dates (for example, on movies). Let s practice writing some Roman numerals together
