5 Mathematics Switch on These numbers describe Ahmed. Match each number with the most likely piece of information about Ahmed. Reading Cardinals and ordinals Read the text. Mark each statement T (true) or F (false). 450,932 is a cardinal number is an even number. 3 Fifty-sixth is an odd number. 4 Ordinal numbers are not used for numbers above There's an ordinal for 0, but it's rarely used. 6 Ordinals are commonly used for talking about dates. 00,000 2 d 0^ The date Ahmed's family moved to Jeddah 2 Ahmed's height, in centimetres 3 The number of brothers Ahmed has 4 Ahmed's weight, in kilograms 5 The approximate number of hairs on Ahmed's head 6 The approximate number of cells in Ahmed's body 2 Think of three numbers that give information about you. Can your partner guess what the information is? There are two main types of number: cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers. Cardinal numbers are the usual numbers: one, two, three, four etc. The number zero (0) is included in this set of numbers. Cardinal numbers include even numbers and odd numbers. Even numbers divide by two: 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. Odd numbers do not divide by two:, 3, 5, etc. The number symbols 0,, 2 and so on are called digits. Ordinal numbers are used to put numbers in order. So the number one becomes first. Two becomes second, three becomes third. Make the other ordinal numbers by adding -th to the cardinal number: four -» fourth. Note these exceptions: five becomes fifth, eight becomes eighth and twelve becomes twelfth. Numbers like twenty, thirty etc. change the final -y to an i: twentieth, thirtieth. However, the ordinal number is made with the final number, so twenty-one becomes twenty-first and thirty-two becomes thirty-second. The same rules are true for larger numbers: thousand becomes thousandth; one million becomes one millionth. But numbers like one thousand and thirteen become the one thousand and thirteenth. Note the short way of writing ordinal numbers: V\ 3"^, 4'^ 26'\e final two letters can be written in small letters and put above the number, as shown. There is no ordinal number for zero. We use ordinal numbers for dates (the thirty-first of January) and to describe the order of things (I'm the third oldest student in the class).

Complete the table. Number (digits) Cardinal number Ordinal number :i two S,tCDV^d T ±±S Short form of ordinal number SOtV\ 4 Write in words the cardinal or ordinal number of the digit in brackets. If you finish a race (2) in the Olympics, you win the silver medal. 2 John F. Kennedy was the (35) president of the United States. 3 weigh (7) kilos. 4 Chinese New Year in 202 was on the (23) of January. 5 The year 206 is the (2400) anniversary of the birth of the Greek philosopher Aristotle. 6 The atomic number of the element strontium is (38). ^,000,000 two V\u.\A,drtd ttv\.d six -'r.derline the correct answer. Yuri Gagarin was the one/first person to travel m space. 2 I started my job on the seventeen/seventeenth of October. 5 There are five /fifth children in my family. 4 I have six hundred and nine/six hundred and ninth dollars in my bank account. 5 The seven billion /seven-billionth child on Earth was born in This is the fifty-two /fifty-second I have received this week! 7 My grandmother visited thirty-three / thirty-third countries in her life! S Congratulations! You are the ten thousand / ten-thousandth visitor to our website! 5 Answer each question with the correct type of number, cardinal or ordinal. How many brothers and sisters have you got?. 2 What number are you in order of birth? 3 What's a date that's important to you and why? 4 Approximately how many days per year do you spend studying or attending classes? 5 Roughly how many people live in your city? Listening Understanding large numbers Match each number with its pronunciation.,000 a one billion 2 0,000 b ten million 3 00,000 c ten thousand 4,000,000 d one trillion 5 0,000,000 e one million 6 00,000,000 f one thousand 7,000,000,000 g one hundred million 8 0,000,000,000 h one hundred thousand 9 00,000,000,000 k ten billion 0,000,000,000,000 J one hundred billion 2 Q Listen and check your answers.

Pairwork Saying large numbers Practise saying large numbers. Work in pairs, A and B. Exchange information with your partner by asking and answering questions to fill in the gaps. Then check your answers. Student A Student B Go to p.l62 Weight of a space shuttle: tonnes Amount a space shuttle can carry into space: kilograms Closest distance from Earth to Mars: 55,650,000 kilometres Amount of oil an average tanker can carry: 38,000 tonnes Weight of a large oil tanker ship: tonnes Distance by ship from Jeddah to Tokyo, Japan: kilometres Distance by ship from Jeddah to Cape Town, South Africa: 8,702 kilometres Distance from Perth to Canberra, Australia: kilometres Amount of petrol a large road-tanker lorry can carry: 34,000 litres An empty lorry weighs about 8,000 kilograms Useful language How far is...from...? How much does... weigh? How much can... carry?

Speaking Numbers smaller than Read the text. Then underiine the correct way to say each number below. Numbers smaller than one can be written as fractions, :rr example -j- and - -. For most fractions, we say the :rp number as a cardinal number and the bottom r.umber as an ordinal number - one third, four fifths. Tr.ere are two exceptions: we say -j- as one half, and veien the second number is 4, we can say either/ourth or quarter. For example, - - is either one quarter or one fourth. Numbers less than can also be written using 0 with a decimal point after it, followed by more digits, for example 0.5 or We usually say all of the numbers after the decimal as single digits: is zero point four nine eight. a 2 one second / one half 5 b five sixths/fifth sixths 6 4 first four / one quarter d 0.88 e 0.9 eighty eight / zero point eight eight zero point nine / one ninth f 0.02 zero point two / zero point zero two Practise saying the numbers aloud. 3 a 4 f b 0.75 g A 5 c 7 h d i 99 e 3 j Work in pairs. Each partner writes three fractions and three numbers smaller than using decimals. 2 Student A reads out his/her list while Student B writes the numbers. 3 Change roles and repeat the exercise. Then check your answers. Vocabulary Calculations Match the words and symbols. plus / add a X' 2 minus / subtract b 3 times / multiplied by c 4 over / divided by d X' 5 equals e X 6 X squared f = 7 X cubed g - 8 point h + 2 (^^ Listen and write the calculations. EXAMPLE Two point five times three equals seven point five. Youwrite: 2.5x3 = Check the calculations. Are they correct? 4 Work in pairs. Each partner writes three calculations. 2 Student A reads out his/her calculations while Student B writes them. 3 Change roles and repeat the exercise. Then check your answers.

Reading Calculating area Read the text. Answer the questions. What formula do we use to find the area of a rectangle? 2 What is the formula for calculating the area of a triangle? 3 Which value is used in both calculations? 2 Look at the picture. Write the calculation to find its area. 4n! : :! i M i! i I Lu calculate the area of a rectangle, we multiply two values: the height (h) and the width (w). This calculation is a called a formula...ll. There's a different formula to calculate the area of a triangle. We multiply the base (b) by the height (h) and then divide by 2: Note that when we write area, we include a small 2 above the measurement: cm'. This is read as square centimetres. The same rule works for a square, because a square is just a rectangle with four equal sides. -" --r-i"-t"-! i! i I r i ~t~i t \ i : i ] i -m i..,...,_ I i : i i ;! I I I! _4. i! j i XI The answer is six square metres. Important! Note that we are multiplying the base by the height. The height may not be the measurement of one of the sides of the triangle. It is the distance from the base to the highest point of the triangle: I I ' r i r i I
