Outreach is about Access August Muench Harvard- Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Sources/mo*vators/collaborators: Seamless Astronomy (A. Goodman); Chandra EPO (K. Arcand, M. Watke); CfA Science Ed (M. Dussault); MicrosoH Research & WWT (J. Fay)
Scope of Access Publica>ons: journal ar>cles; lab notes Data: in papers; raw data; reduced data; test data Methods: code, scien>st tools People: research scien>sts
Foci for this talk direc>ons for access as outreach: interac>ve portals for actual astronomical data virtual (sta>c) roles for research astronomers ques>ons & concerns about access as outreach: evalua>ng content interfaces concerns about virtual (sta>c) roles who is the audience?
Mo3va3ons for Access to Data & Scien3sts I. Science literacy We didn t build libraries for an already literate ci>zenry. We built libraries to help ci>zens become literate. Today we build open data portals not because we have a data or public policy literate ci>zenry, we build them so that ci>zens may become literate in data, visualiza>on, coding and public policy. David Eaves (15 June 2010) OKN
Mo3va3ons for Access to Data & Scien3sts II. Public demand for open access to publicly funded resources/data/knowledge o o o NIH/NSF mandates (for data release) Open government efforts Public policy feedback regula>ng agencies III. Scien>sts have a unique awareness of the inherent compression of informa>on at every level of processing.
Guides: Aesthe3cs and Astronomy Study of the public s percep>on & understanding of imagery from space; Web- based survey of ~9000 respondents asked to evaluate astronomical images; Ques>ons targeted the influence of color, text, & scales; varia>ons in contextual informa>on. adrac>veness & temperature Metrics included view latencies, self repor>ng skill level, comprehension Smith, L. F. et al. 2010, Science Communication, forthcoming.
Guides: Aesthe3cs and Astronomy Four focus groups sampled audiences from students to the public to professionals disaggregate mul>- spectral images Tendencies for novice groups to begin with image aesthe>cs and move toward content inquiry: How are images created? What do the colors mean? What do astronomers see? Results point to the value of contextual informa>on; enabling closer examina>on of the data by the public Smith, L. F. et al. 2010, Science Communication, forthcoming.
Examples: Access to data in Outreach Mul>- wavelength stacks of Research Astronomer data in WWT (built by astronomers for their data) reuse >me slider for wavelengths VO based mul>- spectral views in Google Sky (built by an astronomer for their data) openfits is a project to expose the raw data in EPO images to the public with open source tools (builders are EPO Team) 18 June 2010 web (8 bit) stack of research data AstroInforma>cs 2010
Examples: Access to data in Outreach Web based, data oriented, mul>- spectral comparison only for science?
Ques3ons raised about Access to Data What is an effec>ve interface? Example: What mo>vated the kinds of retooling done to Aladin (Outreach)? Are links as context, context? Example: WWT provides diverse contextual links (Simbad vs Wikipedia) What is data? Example: Chandra event file - > 2D projec>on FITS image - > web 8 bit image formats - > coloriza>on.
Examples: Access to Astronomers (Sta3c) Astronomer driven contextual informa>on. Example: WWT tours wriden by astronomers describe methods and mo>va>ons Video/Audio podcasts Examples: 365 days (s>ll going!) Pub Astronomy Youtube SDO tours 18 June 2010 AstroInforma>cs 2010
Ques3ons raised about Access to Astronomers Sta>c modes of outreach; they lack interac>vity They open lack addi>onal context: Youtube comments may not provide useful annota>on We (I) don t know if we (I) have a clear idea of the audience when we (I) publish a WWT tour, or when I blog/tweet or par>cipate in a web forum.
Foci for this talk status & direc>ons for access as outreach: interac>ve portals for real astronomical data virtual (sta>c) roles for research astronomers ques>ons & concerns about access as outreach: evalua>ng content interfaces concerns about virtual (sta>c) roles who is the audience?
