1 Curriculum Vitae et studiorum of Michele Cantiello Education Università di Salerno: December December PhD in Physics. Dissertation with title: The Surface Brightness Fluctuations method: Models and Observations. Advisors: Prof. Enzo Brocato, Prof. Salvatore Capozziello. Advisors : Prof. Massimo Capaccioli, Dott. Enzo Brocato Jobs 1st July : Research Assistano at the INAF Osservatorio Astronomico di Teramo (OAT) 1 st July th June 2007: Research Assistant at the Washington State University (Pullman, WA, USA) 1 st March th June 2006: Research Assistant at the INAF OAT : PhD with full government grant. 2001: Grant at the OAT, under the project: Fluttuazioni di Brillanza Superficiale (SBF) di ammassi stellari e galassie, con particolare riferimento alla calibrazione dell'indicatore di distanza e all'interpretazione delle misure di SBF in termini di età e composizione chimica delle popolazioni stellari non risolte. Rinuncia, per incompatibilità, alla borsa in quanto vincitore del concorso di Dottorato di Ricerca in Fisica presso l'università degli Studi di Salerno : Post-lauream grant at the OAT : Pre-lauream grant at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte-Napoli (OACN) Brief Scientific Interests My first research interest is the study of the properties of field stars and globular clusters stars in distant galaxies. One of the techniques that I use for these studies is the Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) method, both observationally and under a more theoretical point of view. The SBF method was introduced in astronomy as a technique to measure distances. However, the applications of this method cover a wide range of astronomical subjects, from distances to the detailed analysis of the chemical and physical properties of stars in unresolved stellar systems. In particular, on the observational side, together with the Teramo-SPoT group (Prof. E. Brocato, Dr. G. Raimondo), Prof. M. Capaccioli (OACN), Dr. J.P. Blakeslee (WSU), and Prof. S. Mei (Paris Observatory), we have developed a technique to measure the radial variations of SBF magnitudes in normal elliptical galaxies. The technique has been applied to several galaxies observed with the ACS camera on board of the Hubble Space Telescope. On the theoretical side, together with the Teramo-Spot group we have defined a technique to model with great detail the properties of simple stellar populations (taking into account all the evolutionary phases of a star s life). With these simulations we obtain detailed predictions for SBF and integrated colors of unresolved extra-galactic stellar systems. More recently I ve been also working on extragalactic globular cluster systems (GCS), again both under a purely observational point of view and with theoretical modelling. We have analysed in detail the properties of the GCS in the galaxy NGC5866 using B, V and R band data. Concerning theoretical modelling I have been working on the origin of the observed bimodal color distribution of extragalactic GCS.
