LSST: continuing progress to obtain funding Provide a sensitive survey of the entire sky at visible wavelengths every few nights Tight constraints on cosmic expansion history, and thus on the nature of Dark Energy Highest priority for groundbased project in ASTRO2010 NSF and DOE-HEP moving forward to develop project NSF: Successful PDR review Aug 29-Sep 2 DOE: CD-1 review Nov 1-3 CD-0 approved June 20 12
Revisiting Intensity Frontier focus Nature of neutrino Quark Flavor EXO-200 Data: FY11: 12 FTEs BABAR Project: Data: FY11: 19 FTEs EXO Project: Data: SuperB Project: Data: Uncertain future Heavy Photon Search FY11: 4 FTEs Particle Theory FY11: 24 FTEs Detector R&D FY11: 11 FTEs [Likely] funded Good funding prospects Unknown funding prospects 13
PPA Faculty & Staff retreat: Sep Overall path for intensity frontier discussed with PPA-AC at its June 1-2 meeting Context: FY2012 budget shrinks HEP program by 12.4% Re-examine options for future intensity frontier physics Continue existing or develop new lines of research Considered Super Flavor Factories, rare kaon decays, mu-to-e conversion, future of EXO, long-baseline neutrino experiment, and heavy photon search experiment Position SLAC to participate fully in the upcoming Intensity Frontier Workshop OHEP organized in Washington DC on November 30-December 2 JoAnne Hewett (SLAC) and Harry Weerts (Argonne) co-organizers 14
Questions for retreat 1. Is continued pursuit of SLAC participation in the SuperB project a viable option? 2. Is SuperKEKB/Belle II a viable alternative future for the quark flavor program? 3. Are there elements of the Fermilab intensity frontier program that would be attractive alternative options? 4. Should we grow participation in LBNE as a national priority? 5. Is tonne-scale EXO a viable and competitive long-term direction for the neutrinoless double-beta decay program? 6. Should we encourage the growth of new ideas for smaller projects such as HPS? 7. Are there completely new ideas we can add to the intensity frontier program? 15
New focus: Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment Direction: Expand our Intensity Frontier horizons þ A centerpiece of the national program þ Could significantly advance our understanding of neutrinos þ Crucial to Fermilab s future þ Offers growth potential ý Physics case not yet fully established ý Why yet another lab on LBNE? ý Potentially major international competition Task force established to explore possible participation Relevant core capabilities exist but leadership is key issue SLAC joining LBNE welcomed by OHEP and Fermilab Would be seeking new funding and project roles 16
1300 k m 17
Choosing from two LBNE detector options Science collaboration recommendation by end of CY2011 Cherenkov light systems, trigger and DAQ options attractive for SLAC if water Cherenkov option chosen 18
Second focus: neutrinoless double beta decay Direction: develop tonne-scale EXO concept þ Fundamentally important physics question þ Recent 2nbb measurement with EXO-200 þ EXO-200 experience combined with R&D program could define path forward þ Unique US entry to 0nbb ý Need established reputation with ONP as steward for 0nbb physics ý Would need to renew SLAC leadership See a development path forward towards decision on tonne-scale project over next 2-3 years T1 / 2 = ( 2.11± 0.04 ± 0.21) 10 yr Slowest SM process directly measured [arxiv: ] 21 19
Quark flavor physics status Direction: Keeping SuperB option open þ Physics case remains compelling þ Very small effort but impact amplified by equipment transfer þ Recent positive steps to define project in Italy þ Potentially significant interest in US university community ý Will still take at least a year to define project and still could fail ý Will only be a small part of the SLAC and national program at best Bridge support for a year with focus on equipment transfer Support US community in developing a proposal in 2012 Would only move forward if SuperB project develops a credible management team and project execution plan Requires new funding in tight budget situation 20
Intensity Frontier focus: EXO and LBNE Nature of neutrino Quark Flavor Neutrino oscillations and CP violation EXO-200 Data: FY11: 12 FTEs BABAR Project: Data: FY11: 19 FTEs EXO Project: Data: SuperB Project: Data: FY12: 4 FTEs on non-core funding LBNE Project: Data: FY12: 4-5 FTEs on new funding [Likely] funded Good funding prospects Unknown funding prospects 21
Summary: PPA Program Energy and Cosmic Frontier Good prospects and vibrant future for rich program Further refinement at upcoming PPA retreat Intensity Frontier Fully engaged in national program discussion, with strong participation in upcoming Intensity Frontier Workshop Extending future portfolio to develop participation in LBNE and a renewed push for tonnescale EXO 22
