1 GENERALIZED HEISENBERG ALGEBRAS AND k-generalized FIBONACCI NUMBERS MATTHIAS SCHORK arxiv:math-ph/ v1 22 Feb 2007 Abstract It is show how some of the recet results of de Souza et al [1] ca be geeralized to describe Hamiltoias whose eigevalues are give as k-geeralized Fiboacci umbers Here k is a arbitrary iteger ad the cases cosidered by de Souza et al corespod to k = 2 PACS umbers: 0365Fd, 0210De 1 Itroductio Curado ad Rego-Moteiro itroduced i [2] a ew algebraic structure geeralizig the Heiseberg algebra ad cotaiig also the q-deformed oscillator as a particular case This algebra, called geeralized Heiseberg algebra, depeds o a aalytical fuctio f ad the eigevalues α of the Hamiltoia are give by the oe-step recurrece α +1 = f(α ) This structure has bee used i differet physical situatios, see the refereces give i the recet paper [1] I the same paper [1] de Souza et al itroduced a exteded two-step Heiseberg algebra havig may iterestig properties I particular, they showed that i certai special cases the eigevalues of the ivolved Hamiltoia are give by the well-kow Fiboacci umbers, ie, satisfy a two-step recurrece It is the aim of the preset ote to show how oe may itroduce for arbitrary atural umbers k a exteded k-step Heiseberg algebra which reduces for k = 2 to the oe discussed i [1] (ad for k = 1 to the oe i [2]) I particular, the eigevalues of the ivolved Hamiltoia are give i special cases by the k-geeralized Fiboacci umbers [3] For the coveiece of the reader we ow recall the structure of the exteded twostep Heiseberg algebra, usig the otatios of [1] It is geerated by the set of operators {H,a,a,J 3 } where H = H is the Hamiltoia, a ad a - with a = (a ) - are the usual step operators ad J 3 = J 3 is a additioal operator These operators satisfy the followig relatios: Ha = a (f(h) + J 3 ), ad ah = (f(h) + J 3 )a, (1) J 3 a = a g(h), ad aj 3 = g(h)a, (2) [ a,a ] = f(h) H + J 3, (3) [H,J 3 ] = 0 (4) The fuctios f ad g are assumed to be aalytical (i fact, the case discussed most thoroughly is the oe where these fuctios are liear) I the Fock space represetatio oe has the ormalized vacuum state 0 defied by the relatios a 0 = 0, H 0 = α 0 0, J 3 0 = β 0 0, Date: February 5,
2 2 MATTHIAS SCHORK where α 0 ad β 0 are real umbers By some algebra oe ca show the followig cosequeces a = N + 1, a = N 1 1,H = α, J 3 = β, (the first equatio is the defiitio of the costats N ) where the followig relatios hold true α +1 = f(α ) + β, (5) β +1 = g(α ), (6) N 2 +1 = N 2 + f(α +1 ) α +1 + β +1 (7) Combiig (5) ad (6) shows the two-step depedece of the eigevalues of the Hamiltoia (ie, the eergy-levels): α +1 = f(α ) + g(α 1 ) I particular, choosig liear fuctios f(x) = rx ad g(x) = sx (with r,s R \ {0}) yields the recursio relatio α +1 = rα + sα 1, showig that the eergy-levels comprise a geeralized Fiboacci sequece (which reduces i the special case r = 1 = s to the usual Fiboacci sequece), thus providig a coectio to Fiboacci-oscillators [4] We may write the recursio relatio of the liear case as follows: ( ) α+1 β +1 = ( r 1 s 0 ) ( α β ) (8) Usig β +1 = sα, we ca write this also i terms of the {α } N oly (ad where we switch the order of the vector compoets): ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) α 0 1 α 1 α 1 = T α +1 s r 2 (r,s) = T 2 (r,s) α 1 (9) α α α 0 where we have used the covetio α 1 β 0 s I [1] the equatio (8) is studied from a stability aalysis ad the fixed poits are studied For this the eigevalues λ ± (r,s) = r± r 2 +4s 2 of T 2 (r,s) are determied However, it is also possible to use these to give a explicit expressio for the α due to (9) The result ca also be derived by Biet s formula Note that the case r = 1 = s of the classical Fiboacci umbers (where α 0 = 1 ad α 1 β 0 = 0) gives rise to λ ± (1,1) = 1± 5 2 where λ + (1,1) = is the golde α ratio describig the limit lim +1 α of two cosecutive elemets of the sequece Oe also has a relatio betwee (8) ad (geeralized) Fiboacci chais via substitutio rules [1] I the case r = 1 = s oe associates to (8) the substitutio rule A AB ad B A, thus yieldig the Fiboacci chai A AB ABA ABAAB whose legth grows accordig to the Fiboacci umbers 1,2,3,5, I the case of arbitrary atural umbers r ad s oe has r + 1 differet possible substitutio rules, amely A A ABA A (A appears r times ad B appears at the i-th place with 1 i r + 1) ad B A A (s times) I this ote we show how some results of de Souza et al [1] - correspodig to the case k = 2 - ca be geeralized to arbitrary atural umbers k 3 where the iteger k deotes the order of the recursio relatio which the eigevalues of the Hamiltoia satisfy As recalled above, the case k = 2 is associated to the well-kow Fiboacci umbers which have appeared i umerous physical applicatios, may of them i the cotext of quasicrystals (through substitutio rules - see, eg, [5, 6] ad the refereces therei as first steps ito the vast literature) The case of larger k is associated to the k- geeralized Fiboacci umbers itroduced by Miles [3] ad discussed from may differet poits of view, see, eg, [7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18] Up to ow these umbers have appeared oly i few physical applicatios (i particular i coectio
