Let k and denote (F k,n n 0,thek-Fibonacci sequence whose terms satisfy the recurrence relation F k,n = kf k,n +F k,n, with initial conditions F k,0 =0 and F k, =. In the same way, the k-lucas sequence (L k,n n 0 is defined by satisfying the same recurrence relation with initial values L k,0 = and L k, = k. These sequences were introduced by Falcon and Plaza, who showed many of their properties, too. In particular, they proved that F k,n+ + F k,n = L k,n, for all k andn 0. In this paper, we shall prove that if k and F s k,n+ +F s k,n (L k,m m for infinitely many positive integers n, thens =.. Introduction Let (F n n 0 be the Fibonacci sequence (or sequence of Fibonacci numbers given by F n+ = F n+ + F n, for n 0, where F 0 =0andF =.TheLucas sequence (L n n 0 is defined by the same recurrence relation but with seeds L 0 = and L =. The Fibonacci and Lucas numbers are well-known for possessing wonderful and amazing properties (cf. [5] and [9] together with their very extensive annotated bibliography for additional references and history. For instance, the ratio of two consecutive of these numbers converges to the Golden section α =(+ 5/. The applications of Golden ratio appear in many research areas, particularly in Physics, Engineering, Architecture, Nature and Art. Material engineer S h e c h t m a n et al. [0] discovered the icosahedral phase in the connection to Golden ratio and aperiodic mosaics, what opened the new field of quasiperiodic crystals. 2 PAVEL TROJOVSKÝ Energy Particles [6], [8]. There are many identities related to Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, e.g., we can cite F n+ + F n = L n, for all n 0. Let k and denote (F k,n n 0,thek-Fibonacci sequence whose terms satisfy the recurrence relation F k,n = kf k,n + F k,n, (. with initial conditions F k,0 =0andF k, =. Inthesameway,thecompanionk-Lucas sequence L (k =(L k,n n 0 is defined by satisfying the same recursive relation with initial values L k,0 = and L k, =k. The above sequences are among the several generalizations of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers (case k = and they were extensively studied in the series of papers due to F a l c o n and P l a z a [] [4]. In particular, they proved that F k,n+ + F k,n = L k,n, for all n 0. (. In this paper, we shall search for higher power identities related to (. in the spirit of the Marques and Togbé paper [7]. More precisely, we will prove that Theorem.. Let k, m and s be any positive integers. If F s k,n+ + F s k,n (L k,m m is satisfied for infinitely many positive integers n, thens =.. Proof of Theorem... Auxiliary results In this section, we shall provide some useful results in order to prove our theorem. Similarly to the Fibonacci and Lucas sequences, their k versions also satisfy Binet s formulas F k,n = n n and L k,n = n + n, where =(k + k +4/ and =(k k +4/. Moreover, note that = k + and =. Falcon and Plaza [] contains this result F k,n+l lim = l n F. k,n We will need this generalization. 4 Download Date 9//8 9:46 PM

3 ON THE SUM OF POWERS OF TWO k-fibonacci NUMBERS... Lemma.. Let α, β, γ, δ, s, t be any positive integers. Then F s 0, sα tγ < 0; k,αn+β lim n L t = sβ tδ s ( k,γn+δ, sα tγ =0;, sα tγ > 0 and Fk,αn+β s lim n Fk,γn+δ t 0, sα tγ < 0; = sβ tδ, sα tγ =0; ( s t, sα tγ > 0. P r o o f. Using Binet s formulas for k-fibonacci and k-lucas numbers and subsequently binomial theorem (since < and < / for k we have ( αn+β F s αn+β s k,αn+β = ( L t t = ( ( s(αn+β s +O (s (αn+β ( k,γn+δ γn+δ + γn+δ t(γn+δ +O (t (γn+δ and ( αn+β F s αn+β s k,αn+β = F ( k,γn+δ t γn+δ γn+δ t = ( ( s(αn+β t s +O (s (αn+β (. t(γn+δ +O (t (γn+δ Let us consider n. Thus, one has ( / / O (t (γn+δ t(γn+δ 0 and s(αn+β t(γn+δ 0 if and only if sα tγ =0. Therefore the assertions easily follow. Lemma.. For all k and n, it holds that n F k,n n and n <L k,n < n+. P r o o f. In order to avoid unnecessary repetitions, we shall prove only that F k,n n (the other inequalities are proved in the same way. The proof is by induction on n. For the basic step note that F k, = and F k, = k. Now suppose, by induction hypothesis, that F k,j j for all j n. Then F k,n+ = kf k,n + F k,n k n + n = n (k += n = n and the result follows by induction. Lemma.3. Let k, s be any positive integers. Then L k,s ( k + s/. (. 43 Download Date 9//8 9:46 PM

4 PAVEL TROJOVSKÝ P r o o f. We use mathematical induction on s. For s =ands =wehave L k, ( k + / and Lk, ( k +, what easily follows from the Lk, = k and L k, = k +.Fors 3wehave L k,s = kl k,s + L k,s k(k + (s / +(k + (s / (k + s/( k(k + / + ( k + (k + s/ k k ++ k + (k + s/, immediately follows from k k + <k +, which clearly holds for every positive integer k. as k k ++ k + Now, we are ready to deal with the proof of Theorem.... The proof of Theorem. Suppose that Fk,n+ s + F k,n s = L k,t(n for infinitely many positive integers n (say n belongs to an infinite set S, where t(n is an integer function. By using the estimates in Lemma., we shall have t(n <L k,t(n and t(n+ >L k,t(n = F s k,n+ +F s k,n <sn + s(n s(n ( + s sn+ = F s k,n++f s k,n > s(n + s(n 3 s(n 3 ( + s s(n 3 s s(n. Thus, sn s <t(n <sn+ for all n S. Therefore, t(n =ns + t, for all n S S,whereS is an infinite set and t is a constant, which depends only on s. Then, we consider the equation Fk,n+ s + Fk,n s = L k,ns+t and divide it by L k,ns+t. Therefore, Fk,n+ s + F k,n s =. (. L k,ns+t L k,ns+t Now we consider n (in S in the previous equation. Thus, using Lemma. we have ( F s k,n+ lim + F s k,n = ( s n,n S L k,ns+t L k,ns+t t+s +( s t s 44 = ( s t+s ( + s Download Date 9//8 9:46 PM

5 ON THE SUM OF POWERS OF TWO k-fibonacci NUMBERS... Hence, we obtain the Diophantine equation ( s + s = k +4 s+t. (.3 Marques and Togbé [7] found lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms to solve similar equation for Fibonacci numbers. But this approach is not usable, as the equation (.3 is not purely exponential (because of the k in the basis. Instead of linear forms, we shall use a little taste of algebraic and Galois theory. Now, note that, K := Q( k + 4, then by conjugating the relation (.3 by the automorphism ψ : of Gal(K/Q, we obtain s s+t + ( s = k +4. (.4 By multiplying (.3 by (.4 and by using that =, we obtain +( s + s + s =( s+t (k +4 s, (.5 which can be rewritten, using Binet s formula for k-lucas numbers and using a clear condition that t has to be even, by the following way L k,s =(k +4 s. (.6 For s= the last equality holds for any k.fors with respect to Lemma.3 and the clear fact that (k + s < (k +4 s holds for every positive integers k, s, we see that the solution does not exist. The proof is then complete. REFERENCES [] FALCON, S. PLAZA, A.: On the Fibonacci k-numbers, Chaos Solitons Fractals 3 (007, [] FALCON, S.
