In this paper, we prove that the Cauchy integral operators (or Cauchy transforms) define continuous linear operators on the Smirnov classes for some certain domain with closed analytic boundary. 200 Mathematics Subject Classification. 30E20, 58C07. Keywords. Smirnov classes, Cauchy integral, Cauchy transform, boundedness, continuity.. Introduction As usual, we define the Hardy space H 2 H 2 ( ) as the space of all functions f : z n0 a nz n ( for which the norm f n0 a n 2) /2 is finite. Here, is the open unit disc. For a more general simply-connected domain Ω in the complex plane C with at least two boundary points, and a conformal mapping ϕ from Ω onto (that is, a Riemann mapping function), a function g analytic in Ω is said to belong to the Smirnov class E 2 (Ω) if and only if g (f ϕ)ϕ /2 for some f H 2 ( ) where ϕ /2 is an analytic branch of the square root of ϕ. The reader is referred to [4], [5], [8], [0], and references therein for a basic account of the subject. and Ω will be used to denote the boundary of open unit disc and the boundary of Ω respectively. Suppose that Γ is a simple σ-rectifiable arc (not necessarily closed). The notation L p (Γ) will denote the L p space of normalized arc length measure on Γ. Let Ω denote the complement of Γ. The Cauchy Integral of a function f defined on Γ and integrable relative to arc length is defined as: f(ζ) (.) C Ω f(z) 2πi Γ ζ z dζ (z Ω). C Ω f is analytic at each point of Ω. If Γ is not closed, then (.) defines a single analytic function. If Γ is closed, then Ω has two components, the interior and the exterior of Γ. Then in each component of (.) defines an analytic function.
2 Recall that a closed analytic curve is a curve γ k() where k is analytic and conformal in a neighbourhood U of. If γ is simple it is called an analytic Jordan curve. In this paper we prove Theorem.. Suppose that that D is a bounded simply connected domain and γ D is a closed analytic curve (e.g. ellipse). Then the Cauchy Integral f(ζ) C D f(z) 2πi D ζ z dζ defines a continuous linear operator mapping L 2 ( D) into E 2 (D). Remark.2. The result of the above Theorem is well known in the literature; see, for example, [3] and [6]. However, we give a basic and direct proof. To prove Theorem. we need the following Lemma and Remark. Lemma.3 ([4], p.70). Suppose that Ω is a simply connected and bounded domain and the boundary Γ Ω of Ω is a rectifiable Jordan curve. Then i.: Each f E 2 (Ω) has a nontangential limit function f L 2 ( Ω) and f 2 E 2 (Ω) f 2 L 2 ( Ω) f(z) 2 dz. 2π ii.: Each f E 2 (Ω)) has a Cauchy representation (.2) f(z) f(ζ) 2πi Ω ζ z Ωζ Ω (z Ω). In this case, for equation.2, we say that Cauchy Integral Formula is valid. A special case of the above theorem is the following Remark. In fact, we prove Theorem. using this Remark. Remark.4 ([], p.423). The Cauchy integral formula f(ζ) C f(z) 2πi ζ z dζ defines a continuous linear operator C : L 2 () E 2 ( ) with C. There is another integral operator C Γ on the curve Γ, which is sometimes called also Cauchy integral, viewed as an operator-valued function of the curve. This operator is given by a principal value singular integral: if f is a function on Γ, we define C Γ ( f) on Γ by C Γ f(z) 2πi P.V. f(ζ) Γ ζ z dζ (z Γ). The operator C Γ is probably less familiar than C Ω. These operators are very important in real and complex analysis, and have attracted many mathematicians to investigate them.
THE BOUNDEDNESS OF CAUCY INTEGRAL OPERATOR 3 In fact, there are other types of Cauchy integrals and there have been extensive literature about them and theirs applications as papers and books. For the books concerning Cauchy type integrals and related subjects; see, for instance, [], [2], [2], [4] and [5]. For the books concerning boundedness of Cauchy type integrals; see, for example, [7], [9] and [3]. 2. Proof of Theorem. We are now ready to give the proof of Theorem.. Proof. Suppose that ϕ is a conformal map of D onto. Let ψ ϕ : D. Consider the maps C : L 2 () E 2 ( ) is given by C f f(ζ) 2πi ζ z dζ and Ũψ:L 2 ( D) L 2 () is given by Ũ ψ f(z) f(ψ(z))ψ (z) /2 and U ϕ :E 2 ( ) E 2 (D) is given by U ϕ f(z) f(ϕ(z))ϕ (z) /2. U ϕ and Ũψ are unitary operators. The situation is illustrated in the Figure. L 2 () Ũ ψ Ũ ϕ L 2 ( D) C C D E 2 ( ) U ϕ E 2 (D) Figure. the maps U ϕ and Ũψ so that For f L 2 (), we have U ψ C D Ũ ϕ f Uψ C D ( f ϕ)ϕ /2 and C D ( f ϕ(w))ϕ (w) /2 f(ϕ(ζ))ϕ (ζ) /2 dζ 2πi ζ w Then we have kernel U ψ C D Ũ ϕ f(z) ψ (z) /2 f(ϕ(ζ))ϕ (ζ) /2 dζ 2πi D ζ ψ(z) f(w)ψ (w) /2 ψ (z) /2 dw 2πi ψ(w) ψ(z) D K(z,w) w z H(z,w) (z ).
4 where H(z,w) (w z)ψ (w) /2 ψ (z) /2. ψ(w) ψ(z) For any < r, denote r and σ r by r {z : z < } and σ r r {z : z r}. Since D is analytic (closed) curve, ψ is analytic and conformal in a neighbourhood of. So without loss of generality, we may assume that ψ is analytic and conformal on R for some R >. Then ψ is analytic and conformal on and inside σ r where R > r >. Choose r,s such that < r < s < R. We shall show that H is analytic on r r. Hence, because r is arbitrary, it will follow that H is analytic on R R. Fix z R. Then w F z (w) H(z,w) is analytic in R except at w z. But since residue at w z is 0, the singularities of H for w z is removable. Hence w H(z,w) is analytic on R s r. We can thus apply Cauchy s integral formula to it, giving (2.) H(z,w) H(z,v) 2πi σ r v w dv (for w r and fixed z s,v σ r ). Hence since z s is arbitrary, for all z s and w r, equation 2. is valid. By symmetry, for every v R the function z H(z,v) is analytic on R. Hence (2.2) H(z,v) H(u,v) 2πi σ s u z du (z s,v R,u σ s ). H is separately continuous on R R, so it is (jointly) continuous on R R. Substitute the value of H(z,v) from (2.2) in the integrand of (2.). Since the function H(u,v) is continuous, we obtain ( ) 2 H(u,v)dudv H(z,w) (z s,w r, v σ r,u σ s ) 2πi (u z)(v w) σ r Since r is arbitrary, we will show that H(z,w) is analytic on R R. Now, σ s (u z)(v w) z m u m+ w n v n+ (v σ r,u σ s ) and this series is uniformly convergent for z s,w r, v σ r,u σ s. Hence (2.3) H(z, w) ( ) 2 2πi σ r σ s z m w n u m+ v n+h(u,v)dudv (z s,w r, v σ r,u σ s ) Since H is bounded, the series zm u m+ w n v n+ H(u,v) is uniformly convergent for z s,w r, v σ r,u σ s. (2.4) Because of uniformly convergence, we can integrate the series (2.3) term-by-term and we obtain ( ) 2 H(z, w) z m w n H(u,v) 2πi u m+ v n+dudv (z s,w r, v σ r,u σ s ) a mn z m w n σ r σ s
THE BOUNDEDNESS OF CAUCY INTEGRAL OPERATOR 5 where the coefficients a mn are given by the integral formula ( ) 2 H(u,v) a mn 2πi u m+ v n+dudv. Since H is bounded, we obtain a mn where H sup u,v σ H(u,v) < and so σ r ( ) 2 2πi σ r σ s σ s H(u,v) u n+ v m+dudv 4π 2(2πs)(2πr) H s m+ r n+ s 2 H r m+ r n+ a mn < (i.e. the series a mn is absolutely convergent ). Hence a mnz m w n is absolutely convergent on r r. Thus H(z,w) is analytic on r ( s ) r and so since r is arbitrary it is analytic on R R. Now the series H(z,w) a mnz m w n is uniformly convergent for z s,w r. If we set A U ψ C D Ũ ϕ, then we have (2.5) Af(z) U ψ C D Ũ ϕ f(z) (f L 2 (),z ) f(w)ψ (w) /2 ψ (z) /2 dw 2πi ψ(w) ψ(z) 2πi 2πi w z H(z,w)f(w)dw a mn z m w n f(w)dw. w z (w ) In fact, we will show that the sum and the integral in the equation 2.5 can be permutable. For f L 2 (),z, we have w z a mnz m w n f(w) dw 2πi w z a mn z m w n f(w) dw 2π ( ) ( /2 ) /2 a mn z m f(w) 2 dw dw 2π w z 2 2π ( ) /2 a mn z m f ( z ) 2 < and by Tonelli Theorem (2.6) 2πi w z a mn z m w n f(w)dw a mn z m 2πi w z wn f(w)dw
6 and so Af(z) a mn z m 2πi w z wn f(w)dw Now consider the following series of operators (f L 2 (),z ). a mn M m C N n where M m : H 2 ( ) H 2 ( ) is defined by M m f(z) z m f(z) so that M m z m, and N n : L 2 () L 2 () is defined by N n f(z) z n f(z) so that N n z n. So we have Af(z) a mn M m C N n f(z) (f L 2 (),z ) Then the series A a mnm m C N n is absolutely convergent in operator norm in the space B(L 2 (),H 2 ( )), in fact, M m C N n f H 2 ( ) M m C N n f (f L 2 ()) f L2 () and so that M m C N n a mn M m C N n (i.e. a mnm m C N n converges absolutely) and Af E 2 ( ) a mn M m C N n f f E 2 ( ) a mn M m C N n f (since a mn M m C N n f a mn < a mn < a mn M m C N n converges absolutely) a mn... f and so A a mn M m C N n a mn. This shows that A U ψ C D Ũ ϕ is a continuous operator. It follows that C D is a continuous operator. Second proof of of the continuity of A
THE BOUNDEDNESS OF CAUCY INTEGRAL OPERATOR 7 Since in a Banach space X (here X B(L 2 (),H 2 ( )) ), every absolutely convergent series is convergent, in the norm of X, to an element of X, a mnm m C N n converges to an element B B(L 2 (),H 2 ( )), in the sense that i.e. Then B m lim m,n k0 l0 k0 l0 Our aim is to show that B A, (i.e. Bf(z) 2πi i.e. Hence Now Bf(z) lim a kl M k C N l B a kl M k C N l 0 as m,n. Bf m k0 l0 Bf lim k0 l0 m,n k0 l0 lim m,n 2πi lim m,n 2πi 2πi 2πi Af(z). w z H(z,w)f(w)dw). Fix z and f L2 (). a kl M k C N l f 0 m,n k0 l0 a kl M k C N l f. a kl M k C N l f(z) Bf(z) a kl M k C N l f(z) k0 l0 f(w) w z k0 l0 0 a kl z k w l f(w) dw w z a kl z k w l f(w) dw w z a mn z m w n dw (from equation 2.6) 0 f(w) w z H(z,w)dw So for z and f L 2 (), Bf(z) Af(z). Hence B A. Therefore, since B is a continuous operator it follows that A U ψ C D Ũ ϕ is a continuous operator. Therefore C D is a continuous operator.
