Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, Vol. 22, 2016, No. 1, ENERGY TRANSFORMATION DURING THE PIERCE PROCESS IN THE PRODUCTION OF SEAMLESS PIPES Ladislav Lazić 1)*, Martina Lovrenić - Jugović 1), Željko Grubišić 1) 1) University of Zagreb, Faculty of Metallurgy, Sisak, Croatia Received: Acceted: * Corresonding author: lazic@simet.hr, Tel.: , Deartment of Mechanical Metallurgy, Faculty of Metallurgy, University of Zagreb, Aleja narodnih heroja, 4410 Sisak, Croatia Abstract In the line for roduction of seamless ies the ierce and ilger method, also known as the Mannesmann rocess, are used for the roduction of seamless tubes. Following the cross roll iercing oeration, the tick-walled hollow shell is rolled out in the same internal energy in the ilgering stand, in which the tick-walled hollow shell is elongated to the finished tube dimensions by the discontinuous forging action of the ilger rolls on a mandrel located inside the hollow shell. On the basis of the measured essential arameters, the formulated mathematical model for energy transformations during the iercing rocess was validated. The model allows the calculation of temerature increment of the rounds deending on the temerature rounds before iercing and consumed electricity of electric motor for drive of the stand rolls. Keywords: metal forming, iercing rocess, energy transformation 1 Introduction Steel and iron making industries have been driven by the requirements of maintaining or imroving roduct quality and minimization of roduction costs. Within these requirements the overall energy management and energy efficiency lay imortant roles [1-4]. Energy efficiency of a reheating furnace for stock heating rior to hot forming deends on various arameters of the heating rocess [5-8]. The greatest influence on the furnace energy efficiency has the temerature of the heated stock at the outlet of the furnace, and in connection therewith the set furnace temerature regime. The stock heating is being realized in the rotary hearth furnace in the line for seamless ie roduction, of the nominal heating caacity of 27 t/h. Heated material has the following features: roundshae of mm, length of mm, mass of kg, steel quality - St 7, St 5, St 52 etc. Passing through various temerature zones in a natural gas fired rotary hearth furnace, the round conticast stock is heated to rolling temerature, which deends on the material comosition but generally in the range from 1260 to 1280 C. In the line for roduction of seamless ies the ierce and ilger method, also known as the Mannesmann rocess, are used for the roduction of seamless tubes. The iercing mill consists of two secial countered work rolls which are driven in the same direction of rotation. Their axes are inclined by arox. to 6 in relation to the horizontal stock lane. Generally, the roll ga is closed by a non-driven suort roll at the to and a suort shoe at the bottom. Fig. 1 shows a schematic reresentation of the sequence of cross roll iercing rocess [9]. The round is thrust into the mill, gried by the taered inlet section of the rolls to be formed in a

Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, Vol. 22, 2016, No. 1, siral motion over the iercing mandrel to roduce the tick-walled hollow shell. Once the mandrel engages in the newly formed mouth of the worked round, the material is continuously deformed as it asses between the rolls and over the mandrel. Fig. 2 shows a iercing mill in the line for seamless tubes roduction. Following the cross roll iercing oeration, the tick-walled hollow shell is rolled out in the same internal energy in the ilgering stand, in which the tick-walled hollow shell is elongated to the finished tube dimensions by the discontinuous forging action of the ilger rolls on a mandrel located inside the hollow shell [9]. Fig. 1 Schematic reresentation of the sequence of cross roll iercing rocess [9] Fig. 2 The hotograhs of iercing mill in the line for seamless tubes roduction Numerous exerimental and analytical studies and the comuter rograms that can analyze the deformation and temerature of a material during roll iercing rocesses in seamless ie roduction have been erformed [10-15]. This aer aims to formulate a mathematical model for energy transformations during the iercing rocess, i.e. to determine comutationally the temerature increase of the the tick-walled hollow shell after the cross roll iercing oeration. The first ste is to formulate a mathematical model, and then to carry out validation rocedure of the model with measurement results.

Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, Vol. 22, 2016, No. 1, The structure of the formulated calculation model Calculation model of temerature increment deending uon the amount of used mechanical energy is based on the calculation method described in Ref. [16]. The total heat flow ( ) being absorbed by a round during cross roll iercing oeration, as a result of the transformation of mechanical energy for drive of the work rolls to internal energy of rolled round, is: mc t, W (1) in out / m - mass of the round, kg c - secific heat caacity of the round, J/(kg K) in out - inlet temerature of the round, - outlet temerature of the round, - deformation time, s Transformed mechanical energy to internal energy of the rolled round, discounting the energy loss by friction and heat transfer by convection and radiation on the environment, is: t P, (2) P C C - electromotor ower during the cross roll iercing oeration (discounting the energy loss by friction and heat transfer by convection and radiation on the environment), W - iercing mill efficiency. Considering that =1 and with combination of above two exressions, the equation for calculation of the temerature increase of the tick-walled hollow shell is obtained in the next form: t out in P, mc C. () Taking into account the energy loss by convection and radiation from the rolled iece on the environment, the next energy balance in the differential form may be set for the cross roll iercing oeration: dt V c d A d, (4) - density of material, kg/m m V - volume of rolled iece, 2 A - outer surface of rolled iece, m 2 - total coefficient of heat transfer, W/(m K) - temerature of environmental air, C With the increase of temerature the density generally decreases according to the following exression: kg/m, (5)

Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, Vol. 22, 2016, No. 1, density of material at ϑ, kg/m - density of material at ϑ = 20 C, kg/m - linear coefficient of exansion of the round material,1 K. The solution of differential equation (4) may be resented in the next forms [4]: out A At At cv cv 1 e in e out in Ain At At cv cv 1 e e, (6). (7) Taking into account the ratio of the mass m and surface A of the body, the factor K 1 may be introduced in calculation in the following way: m V S (8) A A K 1 K 1 S - factor which deends on the shae of the body (for cylinder K1 2 ) - calculation thickness or characteristic dimension of the body (for cylinder ), m The heat flow from the body to the environment with resect to the initial temerature of the body: S r 0 A. (9) In the calculation is necessary to define whether it is massive or thin body according to the value of the Biot number (Bi) S Bi. (10) Bodies can be assumed to be thin at Bi 0.25, massive at Bi 0.5 and 0.25<Bi<0.5 is transitional area in which bodies can be referred to one or the other class deending on the desired accuracy of calculation [17]. Introducing the factor of massiveness of the body (), which is determined based on the Biot number [16]: 1 Bi 1 K 2 1 for Bi 4, (11) and substituting equations (8), (9) and (11) into (7), the following equation is obtained: out in 0 K1 t K1 t S c S c 1 e e. (12) Introducing the Biot(10) and Fourier number (F 0) as well as the coefficient of thermal diffusivity (a),

Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, Vol. 22, 2016, No. 1, at Fo, a, 2 S c (1) a t S 1 t and taking into account the equality of Fo Bi, the exression (12) can 2 S S c be written as: out 1 e e in 0 K1 FoBi K1 FoBi. (14) The exression (14) was used in the calculation model. Measurement and calculation results The quality of round conticast was Č880 (API N-80) ( % C, 0.4% Si, % Mn, 0.05% P, 0.05% S, % V). Fig. shows a diagram of the recorded changes of the basic indicators of work of the electric motor during cross roll iercing oeration. The red curve shows the current strength of the electric motor and the blue curve the number of revolutions of rolls. Fig. Changing the current strength and the number of revolutions of the electric motor during cross roll iercing oeration Table 1 shows the inut data in the calculation of the increase of temerature. The averaged value of the current strength is determined based on the diagram in Fig.. The values of averaged ower (P) and the consumed electricity (E) are shown in Table 1. According to the methodology of calculation of heat transfer by convection described in Ref. [18], the overall heat transfer coefficient from the round on the environment deending on the initial temerature of round is calculated (Fig. ).

On the basis of the measured essential arameters, the formulated mathematical model for energy transformations during the iercing rocess was validated.

Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, Vol. 22, 2016, No. 1, The urose of the model is for a certain format and chemical comosition of the round, taking into account the necessary initial rolling temerature in the next ilger rocess, to determine the otimum round temerature on the exit of the furnace. By lowering the stock outut temerature the significant savings in fuel consumtion of rotary hearth furnace could be achieved. In the rocess of otimizing the energy consumtion in line for the roduction of seamless tubes, it is necessary to consider that lowering the initial round temerature in the cross roll iercing rocess causes an increase in the consumtion of electric energy for drive of the rollers as well as an increased wear of rolls.
