Measuring Gaussian Quantum Information and Correlations Using the Rényi Entropy of Order arxiv:03.56v3 [quant-ph] 3 May 03 Gerardo desso, Davide Girolami, and lessio Serafini School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 RD, U.K. Department of Physics&stronomy, University College London, Gower Street, London WCE 6BT, U.K. (Dated: ugust 7, 0) We demonstrate that the Rényi- entropy provides a natural measure of information for any multimode Gaussian state of quantum harmonic systems, operationally linked to the phase-space Shannon sampling entropy of the Wigner distribution of the state. We prove that, in the Gaussian scenario, such an entropy satisfies the strong subadditivity inequality, a key requirement for quantum information theory. This allows us to define and analyze measures of Gaussian entanglement and more general quantum correlations based on such an entropy, which are shown to satisfy relevant properties such as monogamy. PCS numbers: a, Ta, Ud, 4.50.Dv In quantum information theory, the degree of information contained in a quantum state ρ is conventionally quantified via the von Neumann entropy of the states(ρ)= tr(ρ lnρ), that is the direct counterpart to the Shannon entropy in classical information theory []. The most fundamental mathematical implications and physical insights in quantum information theory, ranging from the Holevo bound [] all the way to the whole genealogy of quantum communication protocols [3, 4], rely on a key property satisfied by the von Neumann entropy, the strong subadditivity inequality [5, 6] S(ρ B )+S(ρ BC ) S(ρ BC )+S(ρ B ), () for an arbitrary tripartite stateρ BC. The strong subadditivity inequality implies in particular that the mutual information I(ρ :B )=S(ρ )+S(ρ B ) S(ρ B ), () which measures the total correlations between the subsystems and B in the bipartite stateρ B, is always nonnegative. However, in classical as well as quantum information theory, several other entropic quantities have been introduced and studied. In particular, Rényi-α entropies [7] are an interesting family of additive entropies, whose interpretation is related to derivatives of the free energy with respect to temperature [8], and which have found applications especially in the study of channel capacities [9], work value of information [0], and entanglement spectra in many-body systems []. They are defined as S α (ρ)=( α) ln tr(ρ α ), (3) and reduce to the von Neumann entropy in the limitα. Rényi entropies are powerful quantities for studying quantum correlations in multipartite states. For a bipartite pure state ρ B, any of the entropies in Eq. (3) evaluated on the reduced density matrix of one subsystem only, sayρ, is an entanglement monotone [], dubbed Rényi-α entanglement [3]. ny such measure can be extended to mixed states via conventional convex roof techniques [4]. Using the α = instance,s (ρ)= ln tr(ρ ), the ensuing Rényi- measure of entanglement has been defined and proven to satisfy the important monogamy inequality [5, 6] for multiqubit states [3, 7]. Nonetheless, Rényi-α entropies forα are not in general subadditive []; this entails, e.g., that if one replaces S bys α in (), the corresponding quantity can become negative, i.e., meaningless as a correlation measure; see [8] for explicit two-qubit instances of this fact when α =. In this Letter, we focus our attention on multimode quantum harmonic oscillators, and analyze the informational properties of general Gaussian states as measured by the Rényi- entropy. Gaussian states constitute versatile resources for quantum communication protocols with continuous variables [9, 0] and are important testbeds for investigating the structure of quantum correlations [], whose role is crucial in fields as diverse as quantum field theory, solid state physics, quantum stochastic processes, and open system dynamics. Gaussian states naturally occur as ground or thermal equilibrium states of any physical quantum system in the smalloscillations limit [, 3], and can be very efficiently engineered, controlled and detected in various experimental setups, including light, atomic ensembles, trapped ions, nano- /opto-mechanical resonators, and hybrid interfaces thereof [0]. Given the special role played by Gaussian states and operations, which are formally extremal with respect to several quantum primitives [3], a Gaussian-only theory of quantum information is actively pursued [4, 5]. In particular, a key conjecture which despite its disproof for general channels [6] still stands within the Gaussian scenario, is the socalled minimum output entropy conjecture for bosonic channels [4, 5, 7, 8]. Interestingly, the conjecture is verified (for all phase-insensitive channels) if using Rényi-α entropies withα [9], but to date is resisting an analytical proof for α [30]. This somehow raises the question whether the von Neumann entropy is indeed the most natural one within the Gaussian scenario [3]. Here we show that the Rényi- entropy should be regarded as a specially meaningful choice to develop a Gaussian theory of quantum information and correlations. We prove that the Rényi- entropys satisfies the strong subadditivity inequality () for all Gaussian states, is operationally linked to the Shannon entropy of Gaussian Wigner distributions (providing a natural measure of state distinguishability in phase space), and can be employed to define valid measures of Gaussian entanglement [3, 33] and general discord-like quantum correlations [34 38], whose monogamy properties [5, 6, 39 4] we investigate in detail. In particular, we obtain a truly bona
fide measure of genuine tripartite entanglement for threemode Gaussian states, based ons. Our study allows us to explore within a unified framework the various facets of nonclassicality in the Gaussian realm. Rényi- entropy for Gaussian states. We consider a n- mode continuous variable system; we collect the quadrature operators in the vector ˆR=(ˆq, ˆp, ˆq, ˆp,..., ˆq n, ˆp n ) T R n and write the canonical commutation relations compactly as [ ˆR j, ˆR k ]=i ( ω n) j,k withω=( 0 0) being the symplectic matrix. Gaussian state ρ is described by a positive, Gaussianshaped Wigner distribution in phase space, W ρ (ξ)= π n detγ exp( ξ T γ ξ ), (4) whereξ R n, andγis the covariance matrix (CM) of elementsγ j,k = tr[ρ{ ˆR j, ˆR k } + ], which (up to local displacements) completely characterizes the Gaussian stateρ. Let us now evaluate different entropic quantities on the Gaussian state ρ. ll the measures defined below are invariant under local unitaries, so we will assume our states to have zero first moments, ˆR =0, without loss of generality. The purity is easily computed as trρ = (π) n R n W ρ (ξ) dn ξ= (detγ). Hence the Rényi- entropy of an arbitrary n-mode Gaussian state is S (ρ)= ln(detγ), (5) ranging from 0 on pure states (detγ=) and growing unboundedly with increasing mixedness (i.e., temperature) of the state. The von Neumann entropy is instead a more complicated function that depends on the local temperatures of all the n normal modes ofρ, that is, on the full symplectic spectrum ofγ[, 3, 43, 44]. On the other hand, since the Wigner function is a valid probability distribution providing a fully equivalent description of ρ, we can alternatively compute the Shannon entropy of W ρ to obtain an alternative quantifier of the informational content of any Gaussian state. Such an entropy has a clear interpretation in terms of phasespace sampling via homodyne detections [45]. The continuous (Boltzmann Gibbs )Shannon entropy for a probability distribution P(x) is defined as H(P) = P(x) ln P(x) dx [46]. It can be shown that [47] (see the ppendix [48] for a derivation) H(W ρ ) = W ρ (ξ) ln[w ρ (ξ)] d n ξ R n = S (ρ)+ n(+lnπ). (6) Interestingly, we see that this sampling entropy coincides (modulo the additional constant) with the Rényi- entropy rather than the von Neumann one for Gaussian states. We can now take an extra step and introduce a relative sampling entropy, to quantify the phase-space distinguishability of two n-mode Gaussian quantum statesρ andρ (with CMsγ andγ, respectively), defined as the relative Shannon entropy (also known as Kullback-Leibler divergence [, 6]) between their respective Wigner distributions W ρ and W ρ, yielding [48] ( ) Wρ (ξ) d n ξ (7) W ρ (ξ) ) ] n. H ( ) W ρ W ρ W ρ (ξ) ln R n = [ ( ) detγ ln detγ + tr ( γ γ Let us evaluate Eq. (7) whenρ ρ B is a generic Gaussian state of a composite system, partitioned into two subsystems and B (of n and n B modes respectively, with n + n B = n), andρ ρ ρ B is the tensor product of the two marginals of ρ B. Writing the CMs in block form, ( ) γ ς B γ γ B =, γ γ γ B, (8) ς T B we have tr ( ) γ γ = (n + n B )=n, which entails γ B H ( ) W ρb W ρ ρ B = H(Wρ )+H(W ρb ) H(W ρb ) = ( ) ln detγ detγ B detγ B = S (ρ )+S (ρ B ) S (ρ B ) I (ρ :B ). (9) The above equation defines the Gaussian Rényi- (GR) mutual information I for an arbitrary bipartite Gaussian stateρ B. It follows thati (ρ :B ) 0, as it coincides exactly with the Shannon continuous mutual information of the Wigner function ofρ B, which is positive semidefinite. The expression in Eq. (9), which is analogous to the more familiar von Neumann one [Eq. ()], has thus a precise operational interpretation as the amount of extra discrete information (measured in natural bits) that needs to be transmitted over a continuous variable channel to reconstruct the complete joint Wigner function ofρ B rather than just the two marginal Wigner functions of the subsystems [45, 46]; in short,i (ρ :B ) measures the total quadrature correlations of ρ B. We can then enquire whether a more general property such as the strong subadditivity inequality () which would independently imply the nonnegativity ofi holds in general fors in the Gaussian scenario. Letρ BC be a tripartite Gaussian state whose subsystems encompass arbitrary number of modes. Writing its CM in block form as in Eq. (8), and using the definition (5), we have the following Theorem The Rényi- entropys satisfies the strong subadditivity inequality for all Gaussian statesρ BC, S (ρ B )+S (ρ BC ) S (ρ BC ) S (ρ B ) = ( ) ln detγb detγ BC 0. detγ BC detγ B (0) Proof. The result follows by applying a particular norm compression inequality to the CMγ BC. Given a positive Hermitian matrix M m, and given any two index sets α,β N={,..., m}, the Hadamard-Fisher inequality [49]
3 states that det α β det α β det α det β. Recalling that any CMγ BC is a positive real symmetric matrix [50], the claim follows upon identifying α with the indices of modes B andβwith the indices of modes BC. Beyond its apparent simplicity, Theorem has profound consequences. It yields that the core of quantum information theory can be consistently reformulated, within the Gaussian scenario [4, 5], using the simpler and physically natural Rényi- entropy in alternative to the von Neumann one. In the rest of this Letter we will focus on defining GR quantifiers of entanglement and other correlations for Gaussian states. Gaussian Rényi- measures of correlations. The GR entanglemente can be defined as follows. Given a n-mode bipartite Gaussian stateρ B with CMγ B, E (ρ :B ) inf σ B : { ±iω n σb γ B, detσ B = } ln (detσ ). () For a pure Gaussian stateρ B = ψ B ψ B, the minimum is saturated byσ B = γ B, so thate (ψ :B ) = S (ρ ) = ln(detγ ), whereγ is the reduced CM of subsystem. For a generally mixed state, Eq. () where the minimization is over pure n-mode Gaussian states with CMσ B smaller thanγ B amounts to taking the Gaussian convex roof of the pure-state Rényi- entropy of entanglement, according to the formalism of [, 3]. Closed formulae fore can be obtained for special classes of two-mode Gaussian states [33, 5, 5] exploiting the same procedure adopted for the Gaussian entanglement of formation [3, 48]. Like the latter measure (and all Gaussian convex-roof entanglement measures), it follows from the results of [3] that the GR entanglement is in general monotonically nonincreasing under Gaussian local operations and classical communication, and is additive for twomode symmetric Gaussian states. We can also introduce a GR measure of one-way classical correlations in the spirit of Henderson and Vedral [35]. We definej (ρ B ) as the maximum decrease in the Rényi- entropy of subsystem, given a Gaussian measurement has been performed on subsystem B, where the maximization is over all Gaussian measurements i.e. those that map Gaussian states into Gaussian states [37, 38]. ny such measurement on, say, the n B -mode subsystem B=(B... B nb ), is described by a positive operator valued measure (POVM) [53] of the formπ B (η) = π n B [ n B j= Ŵ B j (η j )]Λ Π B [ n B j= Ŵ B j (η j )] where Ŵ B (η j )=exp(η j ˆb j η ˆb j j ) is the Weyl operator, ˆb j = (ˆq B j +i ˆp B j )/,π n B ΠB (η)d n B η=, andλ Π B is the density matrix of a (generally mixed) n B -mode Gaussian state with CMΓ Π B which denotes the seed of the measurement. The conditional stateρ η of subsystem after the measurementπ B (η) has been performed on B has a CM γ Π independent of the outcome η and given by the Schur complement [54] γ Π =γ ς B (γ B +Γ Π B ) ς T B, () where the original bipartite CMγ B of the n-mode stateρ B has been written in block form as in (8). We have then J (ρ B ) sup Γ ln detγ. (3) Π det γ Π B The one-way classical correlationsj (ρ B ), with measurements on, can be defined accordingly by swapping B. We can now define a Gaussian measure of quantumness of correlations based on Rényi- entropy. Following the seminal study by Ollivier and Zurek [34], and the recent analysis of Gaussian quantum discord using von Neumann entropy [37, 38], we define the GR discord as the difference between mutual information (9) and classical correlations (3), D (ρ B ) I (ρ :B ) J (ρ B ) = inf Γ Π ln detγ B det γ Π (4). detγ B B For the case of and B being single modes, that is,ρ B being a general two-mode Gaussian state, closed formulae can be obtained for Eqs. (3,4) thanks to the results of [37]. We report them in the ppendix [48] for completeness. We remark that Theorem is crucial to guarantee the nonnegativity and the faithfulness of the GR discord [55 57]. Notice also that I (ρ :B )=J (ρ B )=D (ρ B )=S (ρ ) for pure bipartite Gaussian statesρ B. trade-off relation between the entanglemente and the classical correlationsj can be written for arbitrary tripartite pure Gaussian statesρ BC [37], following Koashi and Winter [59]. One can essentially exploit the fact that all possible Gaussian POVMs on B induce all possible Gaussian purestate decompositions of the subsystem C (see also [6]), which implies S (ρ )=J (ρ B )+E (ρ :C ). (5) This relation can be manipulated to express the conservation of different types of correlations in a generic pure tripartite Gaussian stateρ BC, along the lines of [60]. We now look at monogamy properties of the GR measures. For an entanglement monotone E and a n-partite stateρ... n, the monogamy relation (choosing party as the focus), which constrains the distribution of bipartite entanglement among different splits, can be written as [5] E(ρ :... n ) n j= E(ρ : j ) 0. The Rényi- entanglement measure [3, 7], as well as the tangle (squared concurrence) [5, 6], satisfy this inequality for general n-qubit states. Gaussian version of the tangle (based on squared negativity) has been defined that obeys the inequality for all n-mode Gaussian states [40]. We now show thate does too. Theorem The GR entanglement defined in Eq. () is monogamous for all n-mode Gaussian statesρ... n, E (ρ :... n ) n j= E (ρ : j ) 0, (6) where each j comprises one mode only. Proof. The structure of the proof follows closely the one for the tangle of n-qubit systems [6]. It suffices to prove the inequality for tripartite Gaussian statesρ where 3 3 comprises n modes (with n arbitrary), as iterative applications toe (ρ : ) would then imply Eq. (6). It is further enough 3 to prove the inequality on pure states, as it would then extend to mixed ones by convexity [5, 6, 39, 40]. Exploiting
4 the phase-space Schmidt decomposition [, 43, 6], when ρ is pure, the state of subsystem 3 3 is locally equivalent to a -mode state, tensored by n 4 irrelevant vacuum modes. The problem reduces to proving thate (ρ :BC ) E (ρ :B )+E (ρ :C ) for an arbitrary pure Gaussian stateρ BC, where and B are single modes, while C groups two modes. Noting thate (ρ :BC )=S (ρ ), and exploiting Eq. (5), we see that Eq. (6) is verified if one establishes that J (ρ B ) E (ρ :B ) (7) holds for all (mixed) two-mode Gaussian statesρ B. The inequality (7) is proven in the ppendix [48], which concludes the proof of the Theorem. Let us analyze in detail the case ofρ 3 being a pure 3-mode Gaussian state, whose CM is characterized up to local unitaries by three parameters (local symplectic invariants) a j, withs (ρ j )=ln a j ( j=,, 3) [48, 5]. We define the residual entanglement emerging from the monogamy inequality ase (ρ : : 3 )=E (ρ : 3 ) E (ρ : ) E (ρ : 3 ). This quantity, which can be calculated exactly [39, 5], depends in general on the focus mode (say ) chosen for the decomposition of the bipartite entanglements. Remarkably, we find that for all pure three-mode Gaussian states which are fully inseparable and display entanglement in all global and reduced bipartitions (E (ρ i : j ) > 0,E (ρ i : j k ) > 0, i j k), the residual GR entanglemente (ρ : : 3 ) is invariant under mode permutations, thus representing (to the best of our knowledge) the first and only known intrinsically bona fide measure of genuine tripartite Gaussian entanglement [6]. We report its explicit formula here, while a derivation is provided in [48], E (ρ : : 3 ) = ln (8a a a 3 ) (8) ln [ δ+ 3 i= (a i a 4 i )+ 3 i j= (a i a j )], withδ= µ,ν=0 ( (a + ( ) µ a + ( ) ν a 3 ) ). The formula (8) holds when a i a j +<a k < (a i+ a j ). We finally remark that, importantly, the GR discord Eq. (4) also turns out to be a monogamous measure of quantum correlations for arbitrary pure three-mode Gaussian statesρ 3 (unlike the von Neumann entropy-based discord [37, 38, 4]). By using Eq. (5), one finds (see also [59, 60]) D (ρ : : 3 ) D (ρ 3 ) D (ρ ) D (ρ 3 ) = E (ρ : : 3 ). In other words, the residual tripartite discord equates the residual tripartite entanglement for pureρ 3. This extends to the multipartite case the equivalence between entanglement and general quantum correlations valid for pure bipartite states [34, 64, 65], and placesd as the only known measure of quantumness beyond entanglement in continuous variable systems that fulfills monogamy [66]. Conclusions. In this Letter we planted the seeds for a full Gaussian quantum information theory [5] using the Rényi- entropys. This is possible thanks to the fact, proven in Theorem, that such an entropy satisfies the strong subadditivity inequality for arbitrary Gaussian states of quantum harmonic systems. We employeds to define valid measures of entanglement, total, classical, and quantum correlations, highlighting their properties. The Rényi- mutual information is intimately related to Wigner distribution sampling by homodyne detections in phase space. The residual Rényi- entanglement measure allows for a quantification of genuine tripartite entanglement in three-mode fully inseparable pure Gaussian states, which is invariant under mode permutations. We argue that the measures defined in this Letter should be adopted as privileged tools to address the quantification of relevant correlations in Gaussian states. very recent application to relativistic quantum information has been reported [68]. By conception, this work has been biased towards Gaussian states and operations. However, the approach pursued here can be extended to arbitrary, even non-gaussian n-mode states ρ of continuous variable systems, provided one chooses the Wehrl entropy [6] to quantify the informational content of ρ. Such an entropy is operationally associated to phasespace sampling via heterodyne detections [45] as it corresponds to the continuous Boltzmann Gibbs Shannon entropy of the Husimi Q distribution ofρ, Q(α)=π n α ρ α, which is a valid (nonnegative) probability distribution for all quantum states []. One can then adopt a distance measure between any twoρ andρ in terms of the relative Shannon entropy between their respective Q distributions, define ensuing correlation measures, and so on. Such a formalism could also accommodate a measure of non-gaussianity of quantum states [69], and one might then naturally compare Gaussian with non-gaussian operations for the realization of specific tasks [7] such as extracting classical correlations [70, 7], maximizing information-disturbance trade-off [7] and performing optimal cloning of coherent states [73]. [6] The other currently known Gaussian entanglement measures that satisfy a monogamy inequality, namely the so-called contangle [39] and Gaussian tangle [40], do not enjoy this property: the genuine tripartite entanglement in those cases had to be defined by adding a minimum ad hoc over the three possible residual entanglements, each dependent on the focus mode used in the decomposition [5]. The GR residual entanglement behaves instead truly like the residual tangle for three pure qubits, which is invariant under permutations [5] being related to a hyperdeterminant [63].

[66] similar property is satisfied by the geometric discord [67] for pure three-qubit states [4], but with the residual geometric discord being partition-dependent and different from the residual tangle [5] in such a case. In general, measures of nonclassical correlations other than entanglement cannot be monogamous for all mixed multipartite states of arbitrary-dimensional systems [4]. [67] B. Dakić, C. 7 Supplemental Material Measuring Gaussian Quantum Information and Correlations Using the Rényi Entropy of Order Gerardo desso, Davide Girolami, and lessio Serafini ppendix : Derivation of formulae (6) and (7) For the sake of completeness, here we provide the reader with an explicit derivation of Eqs. (6) and (7), on which the operational interpretation of the Rényi- entropy is ultimately based. Direct substitution of Eq. (4) into (6) yields H(W ρ )= Ê n π n detγ exp( ξ T γ ξ ) [ξ T γ ξ+ n lnπ+ ln (detγ) ] d n ξ. The first term in the square bracket is conveniently handled by performing the integration in phase space coordinates ξ that diagonalize the symmetric, positive definite matrixγ(whose eigenvalues will be denoted byγ j ), and by noting that, for any γ>0, one has () + exp( γ x )x dx= γ πγ. () Hence, by applying () as well as the normalization of the Wigner function to (), one obtains Eq. (6): H(W ρ )= n j= γ j γ j + n lnπ+s (ρ)=n+n lnπ+s (ρ). (3) Next, the substitution of (4) into (7) leads to: H(W ρ W ρ )= H(W ρ )+ Ê n π n exp ( ξ T γ detγ ξ)[ ξ T γ ξ+n lnπ+ ln( ) ] detγ d n ξ. (4) Once again, it is expedient to carry out the integration in phase space coordinates whereγ is diagonal (with eigenvaluesγ, j, while the entries ofγ will be denoted byγ, jk ). Then, Eq. () and the normalization of W ρ lead to (7) H(W ρ W ρ )= ( ) ln detγ detγ n n+ j= γ, j j γ, j = ln ( ) detγ detγ where the last step follows from the invariance of the quantity tr(γ γ ) under changes of basis. n+ tr(γ γ ), (5) ppendix B: Explicit formulae for two-mode Gaussian correlations Standard form. The CMγ B of any two-mode Gaussian stateρ B can be transformed, by means of local unitary operations, into a standard form of the type [] γ B = γ ς B ς T B γ B = a 0 c a 0 c, (B) c + 0 b 0 0 c 0 b where a, b, [( a )( b ) c c + abc + + ( )] c ab+c + 0, and we can set c+ c without losing any generality. These conditions ensure that the uncertainty relationγ B iω is verified, which is a bona fide requirement for the CMγ B to be associated with a physical Gaussian state in a two-mode infinite-dimensional Hilbert space []. Recall that for pure Gaussian states, b=a, c + = c = a.
ll the formulae presented in the following will be written explicitly for standard form CMs for simplicity. However, they can be recast in a locally invariant form by expressing them in terms of the four local symplectic invariants of a generic twomode Gaussian state [44], I = detγ, I = detγ B, I 3 = detς B, I 4 = detγ B. This is accomplished by inverting the relations I = a, I = b, I 3 = c + c, I 4 = (ab c + )(ab c ) so that the{i j } 4 j= appear explicitly in the formulae below []. The obtained expressions would then be valid for two-mode CMs in any symplectic basis, beyond the standard form. GR entanglement. For generally mixed two-mode Gaussian statesρ B, the Rényi- entanglement measuree (ρ :B ), defined by Eq. () in the main text, admits the following expression if the CMγ B is in standard form [3, 33], E (ρ :B )= ( ) ln inf m θ(a, b, c +, c ), (B) θ [0,π] with [ [a b(ab m θ (a, b, c +, c ) = + c + (ab c ) c + cosθ c ) ][ b a(ab c ) ] ] ( [ ] )( ) ( ab c a + b + c + c + sinθ a b ) c+ (ab c )+c [ a b(ab c ) ][ b a(ab c ) ] cosθ[ abc 3 + ( a + b ) c + c + (( b ) a + b ) c ab ( a + b ) ] c + [ a b(ab c ) ][ b a(ab c ) ]. (B3) The optimal θ minimizing Eq. (B3) can be found numerically for general two-mode Gaussian states [3], and analytically for relevant subclasses of states (including symmetric states [5], squeezed thermal states, and so-called GLEMS Gaussian states of partial minimum uncertainty [33]). GR classical correlations and discord. For generally mixed two-mode Gaussian statesρ B, the Rényi- measures of oneway classical correlationsj (ρ B ) and quantum discordd (ρ B ), defined by Eqs. (3) and (4) in the main text, respectively, admit the following expression if the CMγ B is in standard form [37] ) J (ρ B ) = ln a (inf ln det λ,ϕ γπ λ,ϕ D (ρ B ) = ln b ln( detγ B ) + ln, (B4) ( ) inf det λ,ϕ γπ λ,ϕ, (B5) withλ (0, ),ϕ [0, π], and ( )( det γ Π λ,ϕ = a (b+λ)(+bλ) a c + + c bλ+λ + ) + c + c λ+a( c + )( c λ ) cos(ϕ). (B6) (b+λ)(+bλ) The optimal values ofλandϕminimizing Eq. (B6) can be found analytically for all two-mode Gaussian states [37]. In particular, for standard form CMs, one gets ) ( ( ))( ( )) a (a inf det λ,ϕ γπ λ,ϕ c +b, if ab c c + a+bc ab c + c a+bc + < 0 ; = c c + (B7) (a(b ) bc )(a(b ) bc +)+(a(b ) bc )(a(b ) bc +)+c c +, otherwise. (b ) Inserting Eq. (B7) into Eqs. (B4,B5) one gets closed formulae for the one-way GR classical correlations and for the GR discord of general two-mode Gaussian states. In general, given thats (Λ Π B ) is concave on the convex hull of the set of Gaussian states having inherited the property from the Shannon entropy of the corresponding Wigner distributions, via Eq. (6) and given that every Gaussian state admits a convex decomposition into pure Gaussian states (see [8, 37, 70] for more details), it follows that the optimizations in Eqs. (3,4) for an arbitrary number of modes are always achieved by pure Gaussian seed elements, i.e., det(γ Π B )=. This simplifies considerably the evaluation of GR one-way classical correlations and discord.
3 Here we prove that the inequality ppendix C: Proof that GR classical correlations exceed GR entanglement J (ρ B ) E (ρ :B ), (C) holds for all two-mode Gaussian statesρ B. This is a central step in the proof of the general monogamy inequality for the GR entanglement measure, reported in Theorem in the main text (see also [6]). Without loss of generality, we can assume the CMγ B in standard form. We observe from Eqs. (B,B4) that setting any value ofθin (B3) provides an upper bound toe, while setting any value of λ,ϕ in (B6) provides a lower bound toj, E (ρ :B ) ln( m θ (a, b, c +, c ) ), J (ρ B ) ln a ln( det γ Π ) λ,ϕ, We will then setθ=π (similarly to what done in [40]), andλ=,ϕ=0 (corresponding to heterodyne detections on B [38]), and proceed to prove that ln a ln( ) det γ Π,0 ln( m π (a, b, c +, c ) ), which implies (C). We then want to prove the inequality +F /G J, where F = c + (ab c ) c + [a b(ab c ) ][ b a(ab c ) ], G = ( )( ) abc 3 ab c a + b + c + c +( a + b ) c + c +(( b ) a + b ) c ab ( a + b ) c + + [ a b(ab c ) ][ b a(ab c ) ], J = a (+b) (a+ab c +)(a+ab c ). This is equivalent to show that, defining K=K(a, b, c +, c ) J F /G, we have min (a,b,c+,c ) K= 0. Let us search for the absolute minimum of K. This function has no singularities apart from the trivial case of two-mode vacuum states (a=b=, c ± = 0) for which we know that lim (a,b,c+,c ) (,,0,0) K= 0. Thus, we can focus on the stationary points of K and on the values at the boundaries of its domain. We adopt the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker method [74, 75]. Given constraints f i = f i (a, b, c +, c ) 0 and associated multipliersλ i 0, the coordinates (a, b, c +, c,λ i ) associated to a minimum of K satisfy the following conditions: (a) (, Λ i ) L(a, b, c+, c,λ i ) (a,b,c +,c,λ i ) = (, Λ i ) (K+ iλ i f i ) (a,b,c +,c,λ i ) = 0 (b)λ i f i (a, b, c +, c )=0, Λ i 0 i (c) there exists a vector x={x i } such that ( K i x i f i ) (a,b,c +,c )= 0. Conditions (a) and (b) are necessary, while condition (c) is sufficient. In this case, we have f = a + b + c + c (ab c + )(ab c ), f = a b + c + c + +(ab c + )(ab c ), f 3 = c + c. bit of algebra reveals that condition (a) is verified by the solutions to the following system K f a b = K f b a K = K + c c + K a ( f c f c + ) f a ( f +Λ + f f f ). c + c + c c (C) It follows that, among the stationary points, the absolute minimum of K is again reached at a=b=, c ± = 0, yielding K= 0: it is immediate to verify that the conditions (b) and (c) are satisfied as well at (,, 0, 0). Finally, we have to check the values of K
at the boundaries of its domain. The relevant cases are a, b, c + = ab, c + = c, c = 0, and somewhat tedious yet straightforward analysis reveals that K 0 always holds for all those cases. We therefore conclude that the function K is always nonnegative, which proves Eq. (C), thereby proving that the entanglement measuree satisfies the general monogamy inequality [Eq. (6) of the main text] for all n-mode Gaussian states of continuous variable quantum systems. 4 ppendix D: Residual tripartite GR entanglement for pure three-mode Gaussian states Up to local unitaries, the CMγ 3 [5] of any pure three-mode Gaussian state can be written in the following standard form γ 3 = a 0 c c a 0 c 3 0 c c a 0 c c 3 0 a 0 c c + 0 c + 0 a c 0 c 0 a 3 (D) where c ± i = [(ai ) (a j a k ) ][(a i + ) (a j a k ) ]± [(a i ) (a j + a k ) ][(a i + ) (a j + a k ) ] 4 a j a k, and a j a k + a i a j + a k, with{i, j, k} being all possible permutations of{,, 3}. The GR entanglement in the two-mode reduced state with CMγ i j is with [33] Here we have set α k = E (ρ i : j )= ln g k,, if a k a i+ a j ; β g k = 8a, ifα k < a k < a i+ a j ; k a i a j a k, if a k α k. (a i + a j )+(a i a j ) + a i a j (a i a j ) + 8(a i+ a j ) (a i+ a j ), β = +a + a + a 3 + a a + a a 3 + a a 3 a4 a4 a4 3 δ, δ = ( +a a a 3 )(+a a a 3 )( +a + a a 3 )(+a + a a 3 ) ( +a a + a 3 )(+a a + a 3 )( +a + a + a 3 )(+a + a + a 3 ). (D) (D3) The residual GR entanglement, with respect to the focus mode i, is E (ρ i : j : k ) = E (ρ i : j k ) E (ρ i : j ) E (ρ i : k ) = ln a i. g k g j (D4)
In general, this expression is dependent on the choice of the focus mode. However, let us consider the relevant case of a fully inseparable three-mode pure Gaussian state, for which entanglement is nonzero for all global splittings and for all reduced two-mode bipartitions,e (ρ i : j k )>0,E (ρ i : j )>0, {i, j, k}. In our parametrization, this occurs when [33] a i a j +<a k < a i+ a j, for all mode permutations. It is immediate to see that the simultaneous verification of such a condition for all mode permutations imposes a k >α k k=,, 3. In this case, exploiting Eq. (D3), the residual GR entanglement becomes E (ρ i : j : k )= ln 64a i a j a k which is manifestly invariant under mode permutations, as reported in Eq. (8) in the main text. This symmetry is broken on states for which some of the reduced two-mode bipartitions become separable. β, 5 (D5) (D6)
