arxiv: v2 [cs.lo] 6 Mar 2015 Note o paracosistecy ad reasoig about fractios Ja A. Bergstra ad Ige Bethke Iforatics Istitute, Uiversity of Asterda Sciece Park 904, 1098 XH Asterda, The Netherlads Abstract We apply a paracosistet strategy to reaso about fractios. Keywords: paracosistet reasoig, atheatics educatio, fractios 1 Itroductio Suppose we wat to defie a arithetic fraework i which it is possible to reaso about fractios i a cosistet ad reliable way ad i which the usual laws of arithetic hold: e.g. for atural ubers,l ad k 0 the equatios + l k +l = ad k k + l = +l should be valid. At the sae tie, we wat to cosider fractios as atheatical expressios with typical sytactic operatios like the uerator u( ) satisfyig u( ) =. The equatioal logic dictates +l = u( +l ) = u( + l ) = u(+l ) = +l. for arbitrary l, ad 0, ad our fraework is icosistet. Nevertheless, fractios are of great practical ad abstract iportace ad we should be able to reaso about the without lapsig ito absurdity. I atheatics educatio, oe ca get aroud this predicaet i various ways: avoidig the cocepts of uerator ad deoiator(see e.g.[8]), viewig fractios as heterogeeous subject (see e.g. [7]), or acceptig cogitive coflicts (see e.g. [9]). I this ote, we propose to apply paracosistet reasoig. Correspodig author. Eail:I.Bethke@uva.l 1
A paracosistet logic is a way to reaso about icosistet iforatio without explodig i the sese that if a cotradictio is obtaied, the everythig ca be obtaied. Paracosistet logics coe i a broad spectru, ragig fro logics with the thought that if a cotradictio were true, the everythig would be true, to logics that clai that soe cotradictios really are true. I this ote, we choose a particular paracosistet reasoig strategy to tackle the dilea sketched above. We do ot clai that this is the oly possible way how to proceed i our sceario; other paracosistet approaches ay be suitable as well. 2 The C & P structure The approach take here belogs to the preservatioist school. The fudaetal idea is that, give a icosistet collectio of preises, oe should ot try to reaso about the collectio of preises as a whole, but rather focus o iterally cosistet subsets of preises. I 2004, Brow ad Priest [4] itroduced the Chuk ad Pereate (C & P) strategy for dealig with reasoig situatios ivolvig icopatible assuptios. I this reasoig strategy, a theory is broke up ito chuks ad oly restricted iforatio is allowed to pass fro oe chuk to aother. I what follows we give a precise rederig of this idea. Let L be soe classical laguage ad let be a appropriate classical cosequece relatio. If Γ is a set of seteces i L, Γ deotes the closure of Γ uder. A coverig of Γ is a set Γ i i I} of classical cosistet sets of seteces such that Γ = i I Γ i. If C = Γ i i I} is a coverig of Γ, a pereability relatio ρ o C is a ap fro I I to sets of seteces of L. If i 0 I, C,ρ,i 0 is called a C & P structure o Γ. If P = C,ρ,i 0 isac&pstructureo Γ adaisasetecei the laguage uder cosideratio, the where Γ P A if ad oly if A Γ ω i 0 Γ 0 i = Γ i Γ +1 i = (Γ i j I (Γ j ρ(j,i))). The C & P cosequeces of Γ are thus seteces that ca be iferred i the desigated chuk i 0 whe iforatio has bee allowed to flow fro other chuks alog the pereability relatio. I our case, a siple biary C & P structure will be sufficiet. We partitio our icosistet theory ito two chuks: the source chuk Γ S ad the target chuk Γ T. The flow of iforatio is fro the forer to the latter oly ad the target chuk is the output chuk. Note that i this case, Γ ω S = Γ S ad hece Γ ω T = Γ1 T = (Γ T (Γ S ρ(s,t))). We let L be the laguage of equatioal logic with ters over the two-sorted sigature Σ cotaiig 0, 1, the uerator ad deoiator u ad deo, 2
0 k 0 k 0 +0 = (1) (+)+l = +(+l) (2) + = + (3) 1 = (4) ( ) l = ( l) (5) = (6) (+l) = + l (7) l = l k k (8) + l = k+l k k (9) + l = +l (10) (α+β)+γ = α+(β +γ) (11) α+β = β +α (12) (α β) γ = α (β γ) (13) α β = β α (14) α (β +γ) = α β +α γ (15) 0 a u( ) = (16) 0 a deo( ) = (17) Table 1: The icosistet equatioal theory Γ the fractio, sybols for additio ad ultiplicatio of atural ubers ad fractios, respectively, ad a additioal error eleet a produced by divisio by zero. The icosistet theory Γ is the equatioal theory of the set of axios give i Table 1. Here k,l,, rage over atural ubers, ad α,β,γ deote fractios. The biary C & P structure for our proble is Γ S,Γ T },ρ,t where the source chuk Γ S is the theory of the axios (1) (8), (11) (17) of Table 1 ad the axios (18) ad (19) of Table 2, the target chuk Γ T cosists of the axio (20) of Table 2, ad the iforatio ρ that is allowed to flow fro source to target cosists of the axios of the source except for (16) ad (17). Observe that i the source, fractios with idetical deoiators ca be 3
0 0 k k k = 1 1 = + 1 = (18) (19) (20) Table 2: Alterative axios for source ad target added ( ): for 0 we have + k = k 1 1 (18) = ( 1 + k 1 ) 1 = +k 1 = +k 1 (6),(7) (19) (18) This fact together with axio (20) yields axio (9). Thus Γ S,Γ T } covers Γ. That Γ S is cosistet ca be see as follows. We let M be the Σ-algebra with the sorts N a = N a} ad F = N N where the operatios are iterpreted as follows. If +, }, the : N a N a N a is defied by x y if x,y N x y = a otherwise, ad : N a N a F is defied by x y = (x,y) if x N,y N (0, 0) otherwise, u,deo : F N a are defied by u((,)) = if 0 a otherwise, ad deo((,)) = if 0 a otherwise, 4
ad +, : F F F are defied by (+l,) if = k 0 (,)+(l,k) = (0, 0) otherwise, ad (,) (l,k) = (l,k) if 0 k (0, 0) otherwise. Note that M does ot satisfy the full axio of fractio additio (9). It is easy to see that M is a odel for Γ S. Clearly, Γ T is cosistet. Γ T ρ is cosistet too: Q 0 ad Q a the zero-totalized ad the a-totalized eadow of the ratioal ubers (see e.g. [1, 3]), respectively are both odels of Γ T ρ. We have thus arrived at a cosistet theory where we have full additio of fractios: for 0 l 3 Coclusio + k l = l l + k l (20) = l l + k l = l+k l M is oly oe of a uber of possible structures that icorporate fractios i such a aer that the opratios uerator ad deoiator ca be properly defied. We do ot exclude that ore covicig datatypes ca be foud as odels for Γ S. For istace with / represetig iteger divisio, the defiig equatio + k l (6) ( ). = ( l+k )/gcd(,l) l/gcd(,l) is copatible with havig fuctios u ad deo aroud i cobiatio with associativity ad the rule + k = +k. We will ot explore such alteratives i this ote. For eadows differet fro coo eadows see e.g. [2]. The relatio betwee the views Γ S ad Γ T requires further attetio. Followig the origial lie of thought, Γ S is a steppig stoe towards Γ T which i our case iplies that the applicatio of the C & P strategy does ot lead to a picture where fractios ad ratioals coexist with the operatios u ad deo. It sees plausible to iagie that a perso thikig alog these lies about fractiosswitchesbackadforthbetweeγ S adγ T. Thesituatioaythebe 5
copared with how a hua observerlooks at the Necker cube [5, 6]. This cube is a 2-diesioal figure which ivites a observer to see i a alteratig aer two differet 3-diesioal iterpretatios of it. Istead of the 3rd diesio we cosider a logic, iforally uderstood. Ad Γ S ad Γ T represet two logics of fractios the alteratio of which sees to be adequately described by the icosistecy-tolerat techique of C & P. Refereces [1] Bergstra, J.A., Bethke, I., ad Pose, A.
