6 page 6 of 12 Metric Conversions Work Sheet page # 4 Science 8: Volume of a Box or Cube Volume of Cube: The volume of solid object with regular shapes such as boxes or cubes can be measured using a ruler. Volume = Lenght x Width x Height The units for the volume of a cube would be in cubic units. If the the length, width, and height are in cm, then the volume would be in cm3. example:

9 page 9 of 12 Measurement Work Sheet page # 6 Science 8: Reading Scales How to read the scale on a Centigram Balance: Step #1: Read the 100's g arm of the Centigram Balance. eg. #1 = 100 geg. #2 = 0 g Step #2: Read the 10's g arm of the Centigram Balance. eg. #1 = 20 geg. #2 = 50 g Step #3: Read the 1's g arm of the Centigram Balance. eg. #1 = 2 geg. #2 = 9 g Step #4: Read the 0.10's g arm of the Centigram Balance. First read the numbered division to the left of the pointer. eg. #1 = 0.5 geg. #2 = 0.2 g Step #5: Next count the unnumbered division to the left between the numbered division and the pointer. eg. #1 = 6 unnumbered divisionseg. #2 = 4 unnumbered divisions = 0.06 g= 0.04 g Step #6: Estimate the distance between the unnumbered divisions to the left and right of the pointer. eg. #1 = pointer exactly on unnumbered division = g eg. #2 = pointer exactly on unnumbered division = g Note: If the pointer was half way between the unnumbered division then we would have g. If the pointer was a quarter the way between the unnumbered division then we would have g which would be rounded to g.
