Answer the following questions in the margins of your notes: 1. Why does a meniscus form when a liquid is held in a graduated cylinder/volumetric flask? 2. Write a set of measurements that are accurate but not precise if the correct measurement is 100 L cm = mm?

15 Accuracy vs. Precision Accuracy The closeness of measurements to the correct or accepted value of the quantity measured. Precision The closeness of the set of measurements of the same quantity made in the same way.

21 Le Système Internationale SI units are units of measurement standardized for international trade. As of 2006, 95% of the world s population lives in metricated countries. There are only 3 countries on Earth that do not use the metric system: USA, Liberia, and Myanmar (Burma)

25 Measurement SI is NOT the metric system. The basic units used are: Length: Meter (m). 1m ~ 3.2 feet. Mass: Kilogram (kg) 1kg ~ 2.2 lbs. Time: Second (s)

26 Derived Units All other measurements are derived from (or a combination of) the seven SI units. They have special names. Examples Frequency = per second = Hertz (Hz) (s -1 ) DENSITY = mass volume 4.21 g 1 ml = 4.21g/mL Volume = multiplying lengths 3.2 m 1.0 m = 3.2 m 2
