Ruzmaikina 1 Department of Phyic, Princeton Univerity, Princeton NJ 8544 Abtract We give a new etimate on Stieltje integral of Hölder continuou function and ue it to prove an exitence-uniquene theorem for olution of ordinary differential equation with Hölder continuou forcing. We contruct tochatic integral with repect to fractional Brownian motion, and etablih ufficient condition for it exitence. We prove that tochatic differential equation with fractional Brownian motion have a unique olution with probability 1 in certain clae of Hölder-continuou function. We give tail etimate of the maximum of tochatic integral from tail etimate of the Hölder coefficient of fractional Brownian motion. In addition we apply the technique ued for ordinary Brownian motion to contruct tochatic integral of determinitic function with repect to fractional Brownian motion and give tail etimate of it maximum. 1 Introduction. Fractional Brownian motion (fbm) wa firt introduced by Kolmogorov in 194 [Kl] and later tudied by Lévy and Mandelbrot [Lv, Mn]. Let (Ω, F, P) be a probability pace, and α IR, α < 1 be a parameter. FBm with exponent α i a elf-imilar, centered Gauian random proce ξ α (t, ω), (t, ω) [, ) Ω (often abbreviated a ξ α (t)) with tationary increment and the correlation function E(ξ α (), ξ α (t)) = C( 1+α + t 1+α t 1+α Γ(1 α) ), C = α co 1+απ 1+α π. For α = we recover the ordinary Brownian motion (obm). From the form of the correlation function of the increment ddt E(dξ α (), dξ α (t)) = Cα(α + 1) t 1 α, one can ee that fbm i not Markovian for all α. The trajectorie of fbm are almot urely Hölder-continuou with exponent le than 1+α, and not Hölder-continuou with exponent greater or equal to 1+α. The finite-dimenional ditribution of fbm are cale-invariant: r, t >, r 1+α ξ α (rt) dit = ξ α (t). 1 Preent addre: Department of Mathematic, Univerity of Virginia, Kerchof Hall, Charlotteville VA anataia@virginia.edu.
2 MAIN THEOREMS. The cale-invariance and long-range correlation make fbm important in application. In recent year there ha been much interet in fbm, ee for example [G, K1, K, Lb, Ml, Sn, T1, T, W, X, Yr]. The problem of the contruction of tochatic calculu with repect to fbm ha been conidered in [Ln, DH, DU]. The main difficulty i that fbm fail to be a emi-martingale for all < α < 1 [Ln]. Our goal i to contruct the tochatic integral with repect to fbm and to prove the general exitence-uniquene theorem for olution of tochatic differential equation (SDE ) with fbm. Due to the trongly non-markovian nature of fbm, the mot natural way to define the tochatic integral i to do it pathwie, for a.e. ω. Thi bring u to the quetion of exitence of Stieltje integral with repect to Hölder continuou function and of the exitence and uniquene of olution of ODE with Hölder continuou forcing (Section ). The exitence of Stieltje integral with repect to Hölder continuou function wa etablihed in [Yg, Kn]. Below we ue the method of Renormalization group to prove a formula (Theorem ) which allow u to etimate the L -norm of the Stieltje integral. We then ue thi etimate to prove the general exitenceuniquene theorem for olution of ODE with Hölder continuou forcing. In ection 3 we apply thee reult to contruct the tochatic integral with repect to fbm and how the exitence and uniquene of olution of tochatic differential equation with fbm. Previou reult in thi direction were obtained by [Ln, DH]. In ection 4 we ue Theorem to get etimate on the tail of the tochatic integral with repect to fbm. We alo conider the quetion of exitence of fbm tochatic integral of determinitic function and derive the probability ditribution of it maximum. Throughout the paper, C β (I) denote the pace of Hölder-continuou function on the interval I with exponent β. We will have many occaion to partition an interval into n ub-interval of equal ize; the i-th partition point of the interval under dicuion i denoted by n i, and we put f( + n i ) = f( + n i+1) f( + n i ) if f i a function defined on the interval. Main Theorem. In thi ection we conider the quetion of exitence of a Stieltje integral for function of unbounded variation, give a formula which allow to etimate it upper bound and prove the exitence-uniquene theorem for ordinary differential equation with Hölder continuou forcing. In application (uch a the contruction of the tochatic calculu for fbm), it i often intereting to conider Stieltje integral fdg for function of unbounded variation. The difficulty in contructing the integral i that the upper bound on Riemann um f g diverge. However thi problem can be olved on certain clae of f, g, ince, if g ocillate fat enough, the nearby term in the Riemann um f g may cancel. It i hown in [Yg, Kn] that the Stieltje integral exit on certain clae of Hölder continuou function. Theorem 1 (Young-Kondurar) Let f C β (IR), g C γ (IR). If β +γ > 1, then fdg exit a a Stieltje integral for all t >.
3 MAIN THEOREMS. 3 Generalization of Theorem 1 can be found in [Dy]. The next formula i ueful in etimating the L -norm of the Stieltje integral and i the main tool ued in thi paper. Theorem Let f, g, β, and γ be a in Statement 1. Then f(τ)dg(τ) = f()(g(t) g()) + k=1 k 1 1 i= f( + k i) g( + k i+1). (1) A far a we know thi form of the Stieltje integral ha not appeared before. The idea behind the proof of Theorem i to write a recurion between the Riemann um on finer partition of the interval and the Riemann um on coarer partition of the interval, very much like in Renormalization group. The ame idea i ued in [Ru] to give a new proof of Theorem 1, which amount to howing that the right hand ide of the equation (1) doe not depend on the equence of partition we chooe. Below we will need the change of variable formula which i a determinitic analog of the Itô formula for Brownian motion. Lemma.1 Let u : [, ) IR IR, e, f : [, ) IR, 1 > γ > 1, β > 1 γ, T >. Suppoe f C β ([, T]), g C γ ([, T]), e i continuou, u i differentiable in t with continuou u/ t and twice differentiable in x.for t T, conider the Stieltje integral η(t) = η() + e()d + f()dg(). Then for all t T, v(t) = u(t, η(t)) i alo a Stieltje integral whoe differential i dv = u t u dt + dη. () η Note that for γ > 1, the change of variable formula i the ame a in the cae of ordinary calculu. Thi follow from the fact that the quadratic variation of g i zero and therefore the term of order dη are negligible. Theorem 1 and can be ued to prove the following general theorem on the exitence and uniquene of olution of ordinary differential equation with Hölder continuou forcing. Theorem 3 Let b, σ : [, ) IR IR, g C γ (IR) and 1/ < γ 1. Suppoe b i globally Lipchitz in t and x, and σ C 1 (IR) with σ, σ t, σ x globally Lipchitz in t and x. Then for every T > and γ > β > 1 γ, the ordinary differential equation ha a unique olution in C β ([, T]). dx(t) = b(t, x(t))dt + σ(t, x(t))dg(t), x() = x (3)
4 3 APPLICATIONS TO FRACTIONAL BROWNIAN MOTION. 4 3 Application to fractional Brownian motion. The natural way of contructing the fbm tochatic integral f(τ, ω)dξ α(τ, ω) i to define it a a Stieltje integral for a.e. ω. Since ξ α (τ, ω) C γ (IR) for γ 1+α with probability one, Theorem 1 implie that the fbm tochatic integral f(τ, ω)dξ α(τ, ω) exit for all f C β (IR) with β > 1 α. The paper [Ln] contain a pecial cae of thi reult for function f(ξ α (, ω)) C 1 (IR) for a.e. ω, derived by expanding f in Taylor erie in ξ α and uing the fact that the quadratic variation of ξ α i zero. Similarly, Theorem hold with probability one for f(τ, ω)dξ α(τ, ω) for all f C β (IR) with β > 1 α. Itô formula for fbm can be tated pathwie, a a corollary of Lemma.1, however it can be tated alo under weaker aumption. Itô formula for fbm ha been etablihed under very different aumption in [DH] for < α < 1, and in [DU] for 1 < α < 1. Lemma 3.1 Let u : [, ) IR IR, e, f : [, ) Ω IR, < α < 1, β > 1 α, T >. Suppoe f C β ([, T]), e i continuou, u i differentiable with continuou u/ t and u/ x C γ ([, T]). For t T, conider the tochatic integral η(t, ω) = η(, ω) + e(, ω)d + f(, ω)dξ α (, ω). Suppoe up E ( u (t, η(t, ω)) ) ( η) <. Then for all t T, v(t) = u(t, η(t, ω)) i alo t T a tochatic integral whoe differential i dv = u u dt + t η dη. Note that for < α < 1, Itô formula for fbm i the ame a in the determinitic cae. Thi follow from the fact that the quadratic variation of fbm i zero. Theorem 3 implie the following exitence-uniquene theorem for SDE with fbm: Theorem 4 Let b, σ : [, ) IR IR, Z : Ω IR and < α < 1, 1 α < β < 1+α. Suppoe b i globally Liphitz in t and x, and σ C 1 (IR) with σ, σ t, σ x globally Liphitz in t and x. Then for every T > the SDE dx(t, ω) = b(t, X(t, ω))dt + σ(t, X(t, ω))dξ α (t, ω), X(, ω) = Z(ω) (4) ha a unique olution in C β ([, T]) with probability 1. In [Ln, DH], the exitence and uniquene theorem for olution of tochatic differential equation wa proved when the diffuion coefficient i a function of time t only; in [Ln], the exitence theorem wa proved alo when the drift and diffuion coefficient are function of X only. Both paper adapt the method ued for obm. The new idea in thi paper i to ue the formula in Theorem, which allow u to prove the exitence and uniquene theorem in the general cae, when the drift and diffuion are function of both t and X.
5 4 ADDITIONAL RESULTS FOR FRACTIONAL BROWNIAN MOTION. 5 4 Additional reult for fractional Brownian motion. When the integrand i of the form f(τ, ξ α (τ, ω)), we can obtain etimate of the tail of the maximum of tochatic integral from Theorem and from tail etimate of the Hölder coefficient of fbm. Theorem 5 Let f : [, 1] IR IR and 1 < γ < 1+α, δ = 1+α γ. Suppoe f i differentiable with bounded f t(t, x), f x(t, x). Write f t = up f t(t, x) and f x = up f x(t, x). [,1],IR [,1],IR Then where P(max t 1 ν = γ 1 1 f x f(τ, ξ α (τ, ω))dξ α (τ, ω) > λ) γ + 1 γ 1 π ( f(, ) + f t γ+1 ) + (1 δ)n n=1 4 γ f x λ f(, ) f t ν exp{ γ 1 γ + 1 ν nδ 1 }. (5). (6) γ+1 More information on the tochatic integral i available when f i a function of t only, ince in thi cae the technique ued for obm can be applied. Statement 4.1 Let < α < 1, and let f(t, ω) = f(t) be a function of t only. If f L 1+α ([, )), then the fbm tochatic integral t f(τ)dξ α(τ, ω) exit in L ([, ) Ω) for all t [, ). The proof i baed on the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality (ee [LL]). Since f(τ)dξ α(τ, ω) i a Gauian proce, we can how the following propertie: Statement 4. Let α and f be a in Theorem 4.1, and let < β < α. Write q f (, t) = f(u)f(v) dudv. If f L u v 1 α 1+β ([, 1]), then 1. for a.e. ω, f(τ)dξ α(τ, ω) ha a t-continuou verion for all t [, 1] ;. for every real r, P(max t t 1 f(τ)dξ α(τ, ω) > λ) i bounded from above by λr/ q f+ (,1) + λ(1 r)/ q f (,1) / dx, where f π e x ± = f ± f ; 3. for every integer m and real λ 1 + log m 4, P(max t 1 f(τ)dξ α(τ, ω) > λ) i bounded from above by 5 λ/c m e x / dx, where c = up q f (, t)+(+ ) up q f (, t)dx <.,t 1 1 t <m x (1) follow from Kolmogorov continuity criterion, the bound () follow from Slepian lemma [Sl] (the intereting cae i < r < 1), and (3) follow from Fernique inequality [F].

We have S n (f) = S n 1 (f) + = = S (f) + n k=1 n 1 1 i= k 1 1 i= f( n i) g( n i+1) f( k i ) g(k i+1 ). A n, S n (f) converge to f(τ)dg(τ) by Theorem 1. Proof: The proof will be reached via the tep-by-tep procedure ued for obm. Fix t >. Step 1. Let φ : [, ) IR be a imple function of the form n 1 i= φ( n i )χ [ n i,n i+1 ], where χ i an indicator function and n i = i t. Define n φ(τ)dξ α (τ) = n 1 i= φ( n i ) ξ α( n i ). Step. Let g C ([, )). Approximate g by a equence of imple function: φ n (τ) = n 1 i= g( n i )χ [ n i,n i+1 ] (τ). Then φ n g uniformly on [, t] and g(τ) φ n(τ) 1+α dτ. Therefore the equence φ n i Cauchy in L 1+α ([, )). To how that the equence φ n(τ)dξ α (τ) i Cauchy in L ([, ) Ω), we ue the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality: ( E φ m (τ)dξ α (τ) = Cα(α + 1) cont φ m φ n 1+α ) φ n (τ)dξ α (τ) (φ m (u) φ n (u))(φ m (v) φ n (v)) u v 1 α dudv a m, n. Thu the integral f(τ)dξ α(τ) exit a an L -limit of g n(τ)dξ α (τ). Thu, for all f L 1+α ([, 1]), we can chooe imple function φn converging in L 1+α to f uch that the L -limit of φ n(τ)dξ α (τ) exit. 5.8 Proof of Statement Lemma We begin with three lemma. The firt i Slepian lemma [Sl, Kl]. Lemma 5.6 (Slepian) Let Γ be a countable et, and let X(t), Y (t) be two real Gauian procee indexed by t Γ. Suppoe EX (t) = EY (t) and EX()X(t) EY ()Y (t) for all, t Γ. Then, for all real λ, P(max X(t) λ) P(max Y (t) λ). t Γ t Γ Conequently, if X and Y have continuou verion, Lemma 5.6 hold when the index et Γ i [, 1]. The next lemma give u Markov property. Lemma 5.7 Let α, f be a in Theorem 4.1, and let < β < α. Let Y (t) be a Gauian proce uch that EY (t) = and EY ()Y (t) = q f (, ) = f(u)f(v) dudv doe not u v 1 α depend on t whenever t. If f L 1+β ([, 1]), then Y (t) i Markov and ha a continuou verion. Proof: To how that a proce i Markov, it i ufficient to how that it non-overlapping increment are independent. For a Gauian proce thi amount to checking that any two non-overlapping increment are uncorrelated: for 1 < t 1 < < t, E(Y (t 1 ) Y ( 1 ))(Y (t ) Y ( )) = EY (t 1 )Y (t ) EY (t 1 )Y ( ) EY ( 1 )Y (t ) + EY ( 1 )Y ( ) = q f (, t 1 ) q f (, t 1 ) q f (, 1 ) + q f (, 1 ) =. Next we how that Y (t) ha a continuou verion. E(Y (t) Y ()) = q f (, t) q f (, ) + q f (, ) dudv = Cα(α + 1) f(u)f(v) u v + Cα(α + 1) 1 α = I 1 + I. dudv f(u)f(v) u v 1 α
15 5 PROOFS OF THEOREMS. 15 I 1 can be etimated by the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality: I 1 = q f (, t) Cα(α + 1) t α β f(u)f(v) u v 1 βdudv cont t α β f. (5) 1+α I can be etimated by the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev and Hölder inequalitie: I cont fχ [,] fχ [,t] 1+α 1+α cont fχ [,] t α β t α+β ( f(τ) 1+β 1+β dτ) 1+α. 1+α Chooing an integer m uch that (α β)m > 1 and α β m > 1, we can enure α+β E (Y (t) Y ()) m cont t γ, where γ > 1. Y ha a continuou verion by Kolmogorov continuity criterion. Finally, we have a reflection principle: Lemma 5.8 Let Y (t) be a centered Gauian Markov proce with continuou path. Then for all λ > and T, P( max Y (t) λ) = P(Y (T) λ). t T The proof i exactly analogou to the obm cae. Now we are ready to prove Theorem Proof of Part (1). Proof: Chooe an integer m uch that (α β)m > 1. Then E( f(τ)dξ α (τ) f(τ)dξ α (τ)) m cont (E( = (Cα(α + 1) cont t (α β)m, f(τ)dξ α (τ) f(u)f(v) u v 1 αdudv)m f(τ)dξ α (τ)) ) m where the firt inequality hold becaue f(τ)dξ α(τ) i a Gauian random variable, and the econd by (5). By Kolmogorov criterion the proce f(τ)dξ α(τ) admit a continuou verion.
16 5 PROOFS OF THEOREMS Proof of Part (). Proof: Let X(t) = f(τ)dξ α(τ). X(t) i a Gauian proce with EX(t) = and EX()X(t) = f(u)f(v) dudv. Define Y (t) to be a Gauian proce with EY (t) = and EY ()Y (t) = u v 1 α q f (, ) for t. Clearly EX(t) = EY (t). It can be hown that the proce Y (t) i welldefined for all t. Suppoe f. Then EX()X(t) EY ()Y (t) for, t [, 1]. Therefore the procee X(t) and Y (t) atify the aumption of Slepian lemma (Lemma 5.6). By Lemma 5.7, Y (t) i a Markov proce with continuou path, and by Lemma 5.8, Y obey the reflection principle: P(max Y (t) λ) = P(Y (1) λ) = / dx. t 1 λ/ q f (,1) π e x Hence for f, P(max X(t) λ) / dx. t 1 λ/ q f (,1) π e x Let f L 1+β ([, )). Write X± = f ±(τ)dξ α (τ). Define procee Y ± (t) by replacing f by f ± in the definition of Y (t). Since Slepian lemma applie alo to X (t) and Y (t), we have P(max ±X ±(t) λ) / dx. t 1 λ/ q f± (,1) π e x Therefore P(max X(t) λ) = P(max X +(t) + max ( X (t)) λ) t 1 t 1 t 1 P(max X +(t) λr) + P(max t 1 λr/ q f+ (,1) + λ(1 r)/ q f (,1) ( X (t)) λ(1 r)) t 1 / dx. π e x Proof of Part (3). Proof: Inequality (5) how that q f (, t) cont t α β, o 1 up t <m x q f (, t)dx <. Thi i the condition of applicability of Fernique inequality [F], of which the claim i a direct conequence.
