1 HAPPILY EVER AFTER: LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD Retold by Alex Field Illustrated by Celeste Hulme Published by New Frontier Publishing SYNOPSIS Little Red Riding Hood visits her sick grandmother in the woods. Her mother warns her to stay on the path and not wander into the woods. But the wolf is clever and Little Red Riding Hood soon finds herself in a spot of bother. THEMES The story of Little Red Riding Hood addresses several significant moral issues, which you may like to explore further with your students. Taking care of your family, respecting your parent s wishes and health and safety are all themes worth discussing. WRITING STYLE Red Riding Hood is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a Big Bad Wolf. The story, first published by Charles Perrault has been changed considerably in various retellings and subjected to numerous modern adaptations and readings. In this retelling Alex Field has simplified the original story for a younger audience with a focus on action and dialogue. ILLUSTRATOR STYLE Celeste starts each illustration with a charcoal sketch before scanning it and colouring it digitally. We first see the wolf as a shadow building up the suspense until he is finally revealed. AUTHOR BACKGROUND Alex has written numerous articles for print and online media. She has written five picture books including the Mr Darcy series. The first three books in the Happily Ever After series will be released this year. ILLUSTRATOR BACKGROUND Celeste Hulme has illustrated numerous picture books and junior fiction novels. She dreams of running off to join the circus as a lion tamer or human cannonball. However, it turns out that she s much better at doodling lion tamers, human cannonballs and other such exciting things in a tatty notebook while pretending to be a grown-up. STUDY NOTES 1. Before reading Little Red Riding Hood, you could introduce the fairy tale by asking your student s prior knowledge of the story. Show your children the book cover to arouse their interest and trigger their memories. Who can they see on the cover? (Little Red Riding Hood) What s she wearing? Where is she? Where s she going? Is she a good girl? Why/not? 2. Did Little Red Riding Hood ever get told off for disobeying her Mum? Why didn t her Mum go with her? Did the wolf get his just desserts? Discuss this with your students. 3. In some versions of this story, the wolf is killed and its stomach is cut open to reveal Little Red Riding Hood and/or Grandma. In others, the Wolf is hit over the head and the barely digested Grandma pops out of its mouth. Other more alternative versions include the wolf fainting at the sight of the axe or simply running off to find its mother! Which ending do your students prefer? 4. Pick three of your favourite pictures and describe the mood of the character in the picture.

The dictionary can be completed in stages either in class or at home. Print pages 4 and 5 double-sided to make the dictionary. Story Review After reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood, your students might like to review it using either of the formats below (see pages 6 and 7). 1. In the first review the children draw a picture of their favourite character and their favourite part of the story. They then rate the story by colouring the stars, for example, =terrible! =OK =fantastic! 2. In the second review the children also say why they like the character and a particular part of the story. For this review, you may like to give examples from the children and/or show them a model, for example: Mum/Little Red Riding Hood/Grandma I like this character because she s good/kind/beautiful/little/old. The wolf I like this character because it s bad/terrible/scary. The ending I like this part because it s happy/funny/ I like cake! What s the Time, Mr Wolf? This is a great energiser for both smaller and larger classes where large, open areas are available, such as a playground, a gym or a hall. Resources: Clock Teacher: (for demonstration purposes) You are Mr Wolf. You are very hungry. Children: You are Little Red Riding Hood and all her friends. Use the clock to demonstrate and practise What s the time? It s 1/2/3/4/5/6 o clock. Ask what time the children have dinner. Show them on the clock and say, It s dinner time! I m hungry! Now ask the Little Red Riding Hoods to stand at one end of the open area. The Wolf stands at the opposite end, with his back turned away from the Little Red Riding Hoods. The Little Red Riding Hoods chant, What s the time, Mr Wolf? The Wolf answers, It s 1 o clock! The Little Red Riding Hoods move forward 1 step. The Little Red Riding Hoods ask again, What s the time, Mr Wolf? and move forward the same number of steps, e.g. 2 o clock, 2 steps; 5 o clock, 5 steps.

Now the wolf must catch one of the Little Red Riding Hoods before they can run back to their starting point. The first Little Red Riding Hood to be caught now becomes Mr Wolf and the game continues. Alternatives: 1. If you are playing in a playground or small area, Mr Wolf could also move forward the same number of steps as the Little Red Riding Hoods. 2. With larger classes, Mr Wolf may catch more than one Little Red Riding Hood, and they all become Wolves.
