A FINITENESS CONDITION ON THE COEFFICIENTS OF THE PROBABILISTIC ZETA FUNCTION DUONG HOANG DUNG AND ANDREA LUCCHINI arxv: v1 [math.gr] 16 Jan 2013 Abstract. We dscuss whether fnteness propertes of a profnte group G can be deduced from the coeffcents of the probablstc zeta functon P G(s). In partcular we prove that f P G(s) s ratonal and all but fntely many non abelan composton factors of G are somorphc to PSL(2,p) for some prme p, then G contans only fntely many maxmal subgroups. 1. Introducton Let G be a fntely generated profntegroup. As G has only fntely many open subgroupsof a gven ndex, for any n N we may defnethe nteger a n (G) as a n (G) = H µ G(H), wherethe sum s over all opensubgroupsh ofgwth G : H = n.hereµ G (H)denotes themöbusfunctonoftheposetofopen subgroups of G, whch s defned by recurson as follows: µ G (G) = 1 and µ G (H) = H<K µ G(K) f H < G. Then we assocate to G a formal Drchlet seres P G (s), defned as P G (s) = n N a n (G) n s. Notce that f H s an open subgroup of G and µ G (H) 0, then H s an ntersecton of maxmal subgroups of G. Therefore the formal Drchlet seres P G (s) encodes nformaton about the lattce generated by the maxmal subgroups of G, just as the Remann zeta functon encodes nformaton about the prmes, and combnatoral propertes of the probablstc sequence {a n (G)} reflect on the structure of G. If G contans only fntely many maxmal subgroups (.e. f the Frattn subgroup FratG of G has fnte ndex n G), then there are only fntely many open subgroups H of G wth µ G (H) 0 and consequently a n (G) = 0 for all but fntely many n N (.e. P G (s) s a fnte Drchlet seres). A natural queston s whether the converse s true. Let {G n } n N be a countable descendng seres of open normal subgroups wth the propertes that G 1 = G, n N G n = 1 and G n /G n+1 s a chef factor of G for each n N. The factor group G/G n s fnte, so the Drchlet seres P G/Gn (s) s also fnte and belongs to the rng D of Drchlet polynomals wth nteger coeffcents. Actually, P G/Gn (s) s a dvsor of P G/Gn+1 (s) n the rng D,.e. there exsts a Drchlet polynomal P n (s) such that P G/Gn+1 (s) = P G/Gn (s)p n (s). As explaned n [3], the Drchlet MSC(2010): Prmary: 20E18; Secondary: 20D06, 20P05, 11M41. Keywords: Probablstc zeta functon, specal lnear groups. 1
2 DUONG HOANG DUNG AND ANDREA LUCCHINI seres P G (s) can be wrtten as an nfnte formal product P G (s) = n NP n (s), and f we change the seres {G n } n N, the factorzaton remans the same up to reorderng the factors. Moreover t turns out that P n (s) = 1 f G n /G n+1 s a Frattn chef factor (.e. G n /G n+1 Frat(G/G n+1 ). Notce that G has fntely many open maxmal subgroups f and only f the chef seres {G n } n N contans only fntely many non-frattn factors. Thscould suggest a wrongargument: f the product P G (s) = n N P n(s) s a Drchlet polynomal, then P n (s) = 1 for all but fntely many n N and consequently the seres {G n } n N contans only fntely many non-frattn factors. The problem s that t s possble that a Drchlet polynomal can be wrtten as a formal product of nfntely many non trval elements of D. To gve an dea of what can occur, let us recall a related queston, wth an unexpected soluton: f G s prosolvable, then we can consder the p-local factor P G,p (s) = m N a p m p ms. It turns out that P G,p (s) = n Ω p P n (s) where Ω p s the set of ndces n such that G n /G n+1 has p-power order. It s not dffcult to prove that a fntely generated prosolvable group G contans only fntely many maxmal subgroups whose ndex s a power of p f and only f a chef seres of G contans only fntely many non-frattn factors whose order s a p-power. Therefore the prevous temptng wrong argument would suggest the followng conjecture: f the p-factor P G,p (s) s a Drchlet polynomal, then G has only fntely many maxmal subgroups of p-power ndex. However ths s false; n [4] t s constructed a 2-generated prosolvable group G such that, for any prme p, G contans nfntely many maxmal subgroupsof p-power ndex, whle P G,p (s) s a fnte Drchlet seres. Knowng that P G,p (s) can be a polynomal even when Ω p s nfnte, could lead to beleve n the exstence of a counterexample to the conjecture that P G (s) D mples G/Frat(G) fnte. However, usng results from number theory, n [4] t was prove that f G s prosolvable and P G,p (s) s a polynomal, then ether Ω p s fnte or, for every prme q, there exsts n Ω p such that the dmenson of G n /G n+1 as F p G-module s dvsble by q; usng standard arguments of modular representaton theory one deduce that ths s possbleonly f nfntely many prmesappearsbetween thedvsors of theorder of thefnte mages of G; but then P G,r (s) 1 for nfntely many prmes r and P G (s) cannot be a polynomal. So P G (s) can be a polynomal only f Ω p s fnte for every prme and empty for all but fntely many, and therefore only f G/Frat(G) s fnte. Really a stronger result holds: f G s a fntely generated prosolvable group, then P G (s) s ratonal (.e. P G (s) = A(s)/B(s) wth A(s) and B(s) fnte Drchlet seres) f and only f G/FratG s a fnte group. Partal generalzaton has been obtaned n [5] and n [6]. All these results can be summarzed n the followng statement: Theorem 1.1. Let G be a fntely generated profnte group. Assume that there exst a prme p and a normal open subgroup N of G such that the set S of nonabelan composton factors of N satsfes one of the followng propertes: all the groups n S are alternatng groups;
RATIONAL PROBABILISTIC ZETA FUNCTION 3 all the groups n S are of Le type over felds of characterstc p, where p s a fxed prme; all the groups n S are sporadc smple groups. Then P G (s) s ratonal f and only f G/Frat(G) s a fnte group. The man ngredent n the proof of the prevous results s the followng result, proved wth the help of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech Theorem and where π(g) s the set of the prmes q wth the propertes that G contans at least an open subgroup H whose ndex s dvsble by q. Proposton 1.2. Let G be a fntely generated profnte group, assume that π(g) s fnte and let r be the sequence of the composton lengths of the non-frattn factors n a chef seres of G. Assume that there exsts a postve nteger q and a sequence c of nonnegatve ntegers such that the formal product ( 1 c ) (q r ) s s ratonal. Then c = 0 for all but fntely many ndces. In our applcatons, c /(q r ) s s one of the summands of the Drchlet polynomal P (s) assocated to the chef factor G /G +1 and must be chosen so that the polynomals P (s) = 1 c /(q r ) s satsfy two condtons: (1) f P (s) 1 for nfntely many N, then also P (s) 1 for nfntely many N; (2) f the nfnte product P (s) s ratonal, then also P (s) s ratonal. Thechoce of the approxmaton P (s) of P (s) s not easy and we are not able to use ths strategy n the general case; roughly speakng, t requres an order on the set of the prmes numbers wth the property that small smple groups n S have order not dvsble by large prmes. When S s the set of the alternatng groups, we just consder the natural order, but when S conssts of smple groups of Le type n characterstc p, we say that a prme q 1 s smaller than a prme q 2 f the multplcatve order of p mod q 1 s smaller than ts order modulo q 2. Ths order depends on the choce of p and our arguments do not work f S contans groups of dfferent knds, for example groups of Le type n dfferent characterstcs. However we expect that our statement remans true n the general case. In the present paper we prove a new result n ths drecton: Theorem 1.3. Let G be a fntely generated profnte group. Assume that there exsts a normal open subgroup N of G such that any nonabelan composton factor of N s somorphc to PSL(2,p) for some prme p. Then P G (s) s ratonal f and only f G/Frat(G) s a fnte group. 2. Prelmnares and notatons LetRbetherngofformalDrchlet sereswthntegercoeffcents. WesaythatF(s) = n N a n/n s R s a Drchlet polynomal f a n = 0 for all but fntely many n N. The set D of the Drchlet polynomals s a subrng of R. We wll say that F(s) R s ratonal f there exst A(s),B(s) D wth F(s) = A(s)/B(s).
4 DUONG HOANG DUNG AND ANDREA LUCCHINI For every set π of prme number, we consder the rng endomorphsm of R defned by: F(s) = n N a n n s Fπ (s) = a n n s n N where a n = 0 f n s dvsble by some prme p π, a n = a n otherwse. We wll use the followng remark: Remark 2.1. For every set π of prme numbers, f F(s) s ratonal then F π (s) s ratonal. The followng result s a consequence of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech Theorem (see [4] for more detals): Proposton 2.2. Let I N and let q,r,c be postve ntegers for each I. Assume that () for every n N, the set { I r dvdes n} s fnte; () there exsts a prme t such that t does not dvde r for any I. If the product F(s) = I ( 1 c ) (q r ) s s ratonal, then I s fnte. Proposton 2.3. [5, Corollary 5.2] Let G be a fntely generated profnte group and assume that π(g) s fnte. For each n, there are only fntely many non-frattn factors n a chef seres whose composton length s at most n. Moreover there exsts a prme t such that no non-frattn chef factor of G has composton length dvsble by t. Proof of Proposton 1.2. It follows mmedately from Propostons 2.2 and 2.3. Fnally let us recall the followng result. Proposton 2.4. [5, Proposton 4.3] Let F(s) be a product of fnte Drchlet seres: F(s) = I F (s), where F (s) = n N b,n n s Let q be a prme and Λ the set of postve ntegers dvsble by q. Assume that there exsts a set {r } I of postve ntegers such that f n Λ and b,n 0 then n s an r -th power of some nteger and v q (n) = r (where v q (n) s the q-adc valuaton of n). Defne If F(s) s ratonal, then the product w = mn{x N vq (x) = 1 and b,x r 0 for some I} (2.1) F (s) = I s also ratonal. ( 1+ b ),w r (w r ) s
RATIONAL PROBABILISTIC ZETA FUNCTION 5 Now let G be a fntely generated profnte group and let {G } N be a fxed countable descendng seres of open normal subgroups wth the property that G 0 = G, N G = 1 and G /G +1 s a chef factor of G/G +1 for each N. In partcular, for each N, there exst a smple group S and a postve nteger r such that G /G +1 = S r. Moreover, as descrbed n [3], for each N a fnte Drchlet seres (2.2) P (s) = n N s assocated wth the chef factor G /G +1 and P G (s) can be wrtten as an nfnte formal product of the fnte Drchlet seres P (s): b,n n s (2.3) P G (s) = NP (s). Moreover, ths factorzaton s ndependent on the choce of chef seres (see [2, 3]) and P (s) = 1 unless G /G +1 s a non-frattn chef factor of G. We recall some propertes of the seres P (s). If S s cyclc of order p, then P (s) = 1 c /(p r )s, where c s the number of complements of G /G +1 n G/G +1. It s more dffcult to compute the seres P (s) when S s a non-abelan smple group. In that case a relevant role s played by the group L = G/C G (G /G +1 ). Ths s a monolthc prmtve group and ts unque mnmal normal subgroup s somorphc to G /G +1 = S r. If n S r, then the coeffcent b,n n (2.2) depends only on the knowledge of L ; more precsely we have b,n = µ L (H). L :H =n L =Hsoc(L ) Some help n computng the coeffcents b,n comes from the knowledge of the subgroup X of AutS nduced by the conjugaton acton of the normalzer n L of a composton factor of the socle S r (note that X s an almost smple group wth socle somorphc to S ). More precsely, gven an almost smple group X wth socle S, we can consder the followng Drchlet polynomal: (2.4) P X,S (s) = c n (X) n s, where c n (X) = µ X (H). n The followng can be deduced from [7]: X:H =n X=SN Lemma 2.5. If S s nonabelan and π s a set of prmes contanng at least one dvsor of S then P π (s) = Pπ X,S (r s r +1). In partcular, f n s not dvsble by some prme n π, then there exsts m N wth n = m r and b,n = c m (X ) m r 1. For an almost smple group X, let Ω(X) be the set of the odd ntegers m N such that X contans at least one subgroup Y such that X = YsocX and X : Y = m; f X = YsocX and X : Y = m, then Y s a maxmal subgroup f X.
6 DUONG HOANG DUNG AND ANDREA LUCCHINI Note that f m Ω(X), X = YsocX and X : Y = m, then µ X (Y) = 1: n partcular c m (X) < 0. Combned wth Lemma 2.5, ths mples: Remark 2.6. If m Ω(X ), then b,m r < 0. Lemma 2.7. Let X be an almost smple group wth soc(x) = PSL(2,p), where p 5 s an odd prme and let w(x) = mn{m m Ω(X)}. Then we have: q(q 1)/2 f q 3 mod 4 and q / {5,7,11,19,29}, q(q +1)/2 f q 1 mod 4 and q / {5,7,11,19,29}, 5 f q = 5, 7 f q = 7 and X = PSL(2,7), 3 7 f q = 7 and X = PGL(2,7), w(x) = 11 f q = 11 and X = PSL(2,11), 11 5 f q = 11 and X = PGL(2,11), 19 3 f q = 19 and X = PSL(2,19), f q = 19 and X = PGL(2,19), 29 7 f q = 29 and X = PSL(2,29), f q = 29 and X = PGL(2,29). Proof. Assume that S = PSL(2,q) where q 5 be an odd prme: Aut(S) = PGL(2,q) and X = PSL(2,q) or X = PGL(2,q). In both the cases the concluson follows easly form the lst of maxmal subgroups of X gven n [1]. 3. Proof of Theorem1.3 We start now the proof of our man result. We assume that G s a fntely generated profnte group G wth the propertes that P G (s) = n a n/n s s ratonal. As descrbed n Secton 2, P G (s) can be wrtten as a formal nfnte product of Drchlet polynomals P (s) = n N b,n/n s correspondng to the factors G /G +1 of a chef seres of G. Let J be the set of ndces such that G /G +1 s a non-frattn chef factor. Snce P (s) = 1 f / J, we have P G (s) = j JP j (s). For C(s) = n N c n/n s R, we defne π(c(s)) to be the set of the prmes q for whch there exsts at least one multple n of q wth c n 0. Notce that f C(s) = A(s)/B(s) s ratonal then π(c(s)) π(a(s)) π(b(s)) s fnte. Let S be the set of the fnte smple groups that are somorphc to a composton factor of some non-frattn chef factor of G. The frst step n the proof of Theorem 1.3 s to show that S s fnte. The proof of ths clam requres the followng result. Lemma 3.1 ([5, Lemma 3.1]). Let G be a fntely generated profnte group and let q be a prme wth q / π(p G (s)). If q dvdes the order of a non-frattn chef factor of G, then ths factor s not a q-group.
RATIONAL PROBABILISTIC ZETA FUNCTION 7 Lemma 3.2. If G satsfes the hypothess of Theorem 1.3, then the sets S and π(g) are fnte. Proof. Snce P G (s) s ratonal, we have that π(p G (s)) s fnte. Therefore, t follows from Lemma 3.1 that S contans only fntely many abelan groups. Assume by contradcton that S s nfnte. Ths s possble only f the subset S of the smple groups n S that are somorphc to PSL(2,p) for some prme p s nfnte. Let I := {j J S j S }, A(s) := P (s) and B(s) := P (s). I / I Notce that π(b(s)) S S\S π(s) s a fnte set. Snce P G(s) = A(s)B(s) and π(p G (s)) s fnte, f follows that the set π(a(s)) s fnte. In partcular, there exsts a prme number q 5 such that q / π(a(s)) but PSL(2,q) S. Let Λ be the set of the odd ntegers n dvsble by q but not dvsble by any prme strctly greater than q and set r := mn{r S = PSL(2,q)}, I := { I S = PSL(2,q) and r = r}, w := mn{w(x ) S = PSL(2,q) and r = r}, β := mn{n > 1 n Λ,v q (n) = r and b,n 0 for some I}. Assume I, n Λ and b,n 0. We have that S = PSL(2,q ) for a sutable prme q and, by Lemma 2.5, n = x r and X contans a subgroup whose ndex dvdes x ; usng the classfcaton of the maxmal subgroups of X n [1], one can notce that q dvdes the ndces of all the subgroups of X wth odd ndex. Hence q dvdes x and consequently n. Snce q s the largest prme dvsor of S and q s the largest prme dvsor of n, we deduce that q = q. It follows that β = w r and b,β 0 f and only f I and w(x ) = w; moreover n ths last case b,β < 0. Hence the coeffcent c β of 1/β s n A(s) s c β = I,w(X )=w b,β < 0. Ths mples that q π(a(s)) whch s a contradcton. So we have proved that S s fnte. By [5, Lemma 3.2], f follows that π(g) s also fnte. Proof of Theorem 1.3. Let T be the set of the almost smple groups X such that there exsts nfntely many J wth X = X and let I = { J X T }. By Lemma 3.2, J \I s fnte. We have to prove that J s fnte; ths s equvalent to show that I =. Let I : by the hypothess of Theorem 1.3, there exsts a prme q such that S {C q,psl(2,q )}. Set q = max{q I} and let Λ be the set of odd ntegers n dvsble by q. Assume n Λ and b,n 0 for some I. If S s cyclc, then P (s) = 1 c n /n s where n = G /G +1 = q r and c n s the number of complements of G /G +1 n G/G +1 : ths mples q = q. Otherwse S = PSL(2,q ) wth q q and, by Lemma 2.5, n = x r and X contans a subgroup whose ndex dvdes x ; snce x dvdes SL(2,q ), q dvdes x and q q, we must have q = q. In both the cases, we have n = x r where x a postve nteger wth v q (x ) = 1. Let w = mn{x Λ v q (x) = 1 and b,x r 0 for some I}.
8 DUONG HOANG DUNG AND ANDREA LUCCHINI Snce J \I s fnte and P G (s) = J P (s) s ratonal, also I P (s) s ratonal. In partcular, the followng seres s ratonal: Q(s) = P {2} (s). I Let I = { I b,w r 0}. By the above consderatons and Remark 2.6, I f and only f ether S = Cq and w = q or soc(x ) = PSL(2,q) and w(x ) = w. In partcular f I then there exst nfntely many j I wth X = Xj and all of them are n I, hence I s an nfnte set. Moreover b,w r < 0 for every I, and therefore applyng Proposton 2.4to the Drchlet seres Q(s), we deduce that the product H(s) = I ( 1+ b ),w r w r = ( 1+ b ),w r s w r s I s ratonal. By Corollary 1.2 the set I must be fnte, a contradcton.
