Unon-ntersectng set systems Gyula O.H. Katona and Dánel T. Nagy March 4, 014 arxv: v1 [math.co] 1 Mar 014 Abstract Three ntersecton theorems are proved. Frst, we determne the sze of the largest set system, where the system of the parwse unons s l-ntersectng. Then we nvestgate set systems where the unon of any s sets ntersect the unon of any t sets. The maxmal sze of such a set system s determned exactly f s +t 4, and asymptotcally f s + t 5. Fnally, we exactly determne the maxmal sze of a k-unform set system that has the above descrbed (s, t-unon-ntersectng property, for large enough n. Keywords Extremal set systems, Intersectng famly, Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, -system, Forbdden subposets 1 Introducton In the present paper we prove three ntersecton theorems, nspred by the followng queston. What s the maxmal possble sze of F? We wll solve ths problem as a specal case of Theorem.1. (See Remark.. The paper s organzed as follows. In the rest of ths secton we revew some theorems that wll be used later. In Secton, the sze of the largest set system wll be determned, where the system of the parwse unons s l-ntersectng. In Secton 3, we nvestgate set systems where the unon of any s sets ntersect the unon of any t sets. The maxmal sze of such a set system s determned exactly f s+t 4, and asymptotcally f s+t 5. 3 Unon-l-ntersectng systems Defnton Let F be a set system and k N. Then F k denotes the set of the k-element sets n F. Defnton A set system F s called unon-l-ntersectng, f t satsfes (F 1 F (G 1 G l for all sets F 1,F,G 1,G F, F 1 F, G 1 G. Theorem.1. Let F be a unon-l-ntersectng set system whose elements are subsets of. (n 3 Then we have the the followng upper bounds for F. a If n+l s even, then b If n+l s odd, then = n+l 1 ( AK n, n+l 3,l. (8 + = n+l 1. (9 These are the best possble bounds. Proof. We can assume that F s an upset, that s A F, A B mply B F. (If there are sets A B, A F, B F then we can replace F by F A+B. After fntely many steps we arrve at an upset of the same sze that s stll unon-l-ntersectng. Frst, assume that l {1,}. Note that f A,B F, A B =, and A B = n+l 3 < n, then both A and B can not be n F at the same tme. A,B F and F beng an upset would mply that there are two sets C,D F such that A C, B D and (A C (B D = C D = l 1, wth contradcton. For all 0 < n+l 3 defne the bpartte graph G (S,T,E as follows. Let S be the set of all the -element subsets of, let T be the set of subsets of sze n+l 3, and connect two sets A S and B T f they are dsjont. Then both vertex classes contan vertces of the same degree, so t follows by Hall s theorem that there s a matchng that covers the smaller vertex class, that s S. Snce at most one of two matched subsets can be n F, t follows that ( ( F + F n+l 3 n n+l 3 0 < n+l 3. (10 Now let l 3. We wll show that (10 holds for all n. Assume that there are A,B F, A,B such that A B l 3. Take x A and y B. Then A {x}, B {y} F, snce F s an upset and (A (A {x} (B (B {y} = (A {x} (B {y} (A B {x,y} = l 3+ < l. So F {} s an (l -ntersectng system, so F s one too. Now use Theorem 1. wth t = l. (l s postve snce l 3. It gves us that (10 holds for all n and l. Assume that l s a postve nteger n+l s odd. Then the sets n F n+l 3 form an l-ntersectng famly. A,B F n+l 3, A B l 1 and F beng an upset would mply that there are two sets C,D F such that A C, B D and (A C (B D = C D = l 1. So Theorem 1.1 provdes an upper bound: ( F n+l 3 AK n, n+l 3,l. (11 3
mply The upper bounds of the theorem follow after some calculatons. When l, the nequaltes of (10 F = =0 F = F n+l 3 + n+l =0 ( F + F n+l 3 + =n+l F F n+l 3 + Let l 3. Snce F s (l -ntersectng, F = 0 for all < l. Usng (10, we get F = =l 3 F = F n+l 3 + n+l =l 3 ( F + F n+l 3 F n+l 3 + = n+l 1 = n+l 1. (1. (13 We got the same nequalty n the two cases. The upper bounds of the theorem follow mmedately, snce F n+l 3 =, f n+l s even, and F n+l 3 AK ( n, n+l 3,l, f n+l s odd (see (11. To verfy that the gven bounds are best possble, consder the followng unon-l-ntersectng set systems. When n+l s even, take all the subsets of sze at least n+l 1. When n+l s odd, take all the subsets of sze at least n+l 1 and an n+l 3 -unform l-ntersectng set system of sze AK ( n, n+l 3,l. Remark.. Let us formulate the specal case l = 1 what was orgnally asked by Körner. The Erdős- Ko-Rado theorem [3] states that the sze of the largest k-unform ntersectng system of subsets of s k 1, when n k. It means that AK(n, n 1,1 = ( n 1 n, so the best upper bound for F when l = 1 s f n s odd, =(n 1/ n ( (14 n n + f n s even. = n 3 Consderng the unon of more subsets In ths secton we nvestgate a varaton of the problem where we take the unon of s and t subsets nstead of and. Defnton A set system F s called (s,t-unon-ntersectng f t has the property that for all s + t parwse dfferent sets F 1,F,...F s,g 1,...G t F ( s t F. (15 =1 j=1 The sze of the largest (s, t-unon-ntersectng system whose elements are subsets of s denoted by f(n,s,t. G j In ths secton we determne the value of f(n,s,t exactly when s+t 4 and asymptotcally n the other cases. Snce f(n,s,t = f(n,t,s, we can assume that s t. Theorem 3.1. Let n 3. 4
a f(n,1,1 = n 1. (16 b f(n,1, = =n/ n 3 + n =(n+1/ f n s even, f n s odd. (17 c =(n 1/ f(n,, = n n + =n/ f n s odd, f n s even. (18 d f(n,1,3 = =n/ n 1 + n =(n+1/ f n s even, f n s odd. (19 e If t 4, then n ( ( ( n n 1 f(n,1,t n 1 + n/ n/ + t n +O(n. (0 f If s and t 3, then n n 1 + n/ n+ f(n,s,t n 1 + ( ( n 1+ t+s 3 +O(n. (1 n/ n Proof. a (See [3]. f(n,1,1 s the sze of the largest ntersectng system among the subsets of. It s at most n 1, snce a subset and ts complement cannot be n the ntersectng system at the same tme. By choosng all the subsets contanng a fxed element, we get an ntersectng system of sze n 1. b Let F be a (1,-unon-ntersectng system. We can assume that F s an upset. Note that f A,B F, A B =, and A B = n 1, then A and B can not be n F at the same tme. To see ths, take let {x} = (A B. Then A (B (B {x} = A (B {x} =. For all 0 < n 1 defne the bpartte graph G (S,T,E as follows. Let S be the set of all the -element subsets of, let T be the set of subsets of sze n 1, and connect two sets A S and B T f they are dsjont. Then both vertex classes contan vertces of the same degree, so t follows by Hall s theorem that there s a matchng that covers the smaller vertex class, that s S. Snce at most one of two matched subsets can be n F, t follows that ( ( F + F n 1 n n 1 0 < n 1. ( 5
When n s even, these nequaltes together mply =n/. (3 Assume that n s odd. Then F n 1 s an ntersectng famly. A,B F n 1, A B = and F beng an upset would mply that there s a set C F such that B C and A (B C = A C =. So the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem provdes an upper bound: ( F n 1 n 1. (4 Ths, together wth the nequaltes of ( mples 1 n 3 + n 3 =(n+1/. (5 To verfy that the gven bounds are best possble, consder the followng (1,-unon-ntersectng set systems. When n s even, take all the subsets of sze at least n. When n s odd, take all the subsets of sze at least n+1 and the subsets of sze n 1 contanng a fxed element. c We already solved ths problem as the case l = 1 n Theorem.1. (See Remark.. d Let F be a (1,3-unon-ntersectng system of subsets of. Let F = { F F F}, and let G = F F. Now we prove that G s K 1, -free and K,1 -free. (See Secton 1 for the defntons. Snce G s nvarant to takng complements, t s enough to show that G s K 1 -free. Assume that there are three parwse dfferent sets A,B,C G, such that A B and A C. Then the sets A, A, B, C F would satsfy A (( A ( B ( C = A ( A =. (6 Theorem 1.3 gves us the followng upper bound for a set system that s K 1 -free and K 1 -free: 1 G n 1. (7 Snce n + G, we have n n 1 = =n/ n 1 + n =(n+1/ f n s even, f n s odd. (8 To verfy that the gven bounds are best possble, consder the followng (1,3-unon-ntersectng set systems. When n s even, take all the subsets of sze at least n. When n s odd, take all the subsets of sze at least n+1 and the subsets of sze n 1 not contanng a fxed element. e Let F be a (1,t-unon-ntersectng system of subsets of. Defne G as above, and note that G s K 1,t 1 -free. Theorem 1.4 mples G ( ( n 1+ (t +O(n. (9 n/ n 6
Snce n + G, we have n 1 + The lower bound follows obvously from f(n,1,t f(n,1,3 = n 1 + ( ( n 1 n/ + t n +O(n. (30 1 n 1 n (31 n/ f Let F be an (s,t-unon-ntersectng system of subsets of. Defne G as above. Now we prove that G s K s,t -free. Assume that A 1,A,...A s,b 1,...B t G are parwse dfferent subsets and A B j ( s t for all (,j. Then A ( B j =. It s a contradcton, snce B j F for all j. Theorem 1.5 mples =1 G Snce n + G, we have The lower bound follows from j=1 n 1 + ( ( n + (s+t 3 +O(n. (3 n/ n ( ( n 1+ t+s 3 +O(n. (33 n/ n f(n,s,t f(n,, n 1 + n n/ n+. (34 (The second nequalty can be verfed by elementary calculatons snce the exact value of f(n,, s known. Equalty holds when n s even. 4 The k-unform case In ths secton we determne the sze of the largest k-unform (s, t-unon-ntersectng set system of subsets of for all large enough n. Theorem 4.1. Assume that 1 s t and F ( k s an (s,t-unon-ntersectng set system. Then 1 +s 1 k 1 holds for all n > n(k,t. Remark 4.. There s k-unform (s,t-unon-ntersectng set system of sze k 1 + s 1. Take all k-element sets contanng a fxed element, then take s 1 arbtrary sets of sze k. We need some preparaton before we can start the proof of Theorem 4.1. Defnton A sunflower (or -system wth r petals and center M s a famly {S 1,S,...S r } where S S j = M for all 1 < j r. 7
Lemma 4.3. (Erdős-Rado [4] Assume that A ( k and A > k!(r 1 k. Then A contans a sunflower wth r petals as a subfamly. Proof. We prove the lemma by nducton on k. The statement of the lemma s obvously true when k = 0. Let A ( k a set system not contanng a sunflower wth r petals. Let {A1,A,...A m } be a maxmal famly of parwse dsjont sets n A.
