A NOTE ON ODD PERFECT NUMBERS JOSE ARNALDO B. DRIS AND FLORIAN LUCA arxv:03.437v6 [math.nt] 23 Aug 206 Abstract. In ths note, we show that f N s an odd perfect number and q α s some prme power exactly dvdng t, then σ(n/q α /q α > 5. In general, we also show that f σ(n/q α /q α < K, where K s any constant, then N s bounded by some functon dependng on K.. Introducton For a postve nteger N we wrte σ(n for the sum of the dvsors of N. A number N s perfect f σ(n = 2N. Even perfect numbers have been characterzed by Euler. Namely, N s an even perfect number f and only f N = 2 (2 p, where 2 p s prme. Hence, the only obstructon n provng that there are nfntely many of them les wth provng that there exst nfntely many prmes of the form 2 p. We know less about odd perfect numbers. No example has been found, nor do we have a proof that they don t exst. If they exst, then they must have at least 7 dstnct prme factors, a result of Pomerance from [6]. The bound 7 has been rased to 9 recently n [5]. Brent et. al. [2] showed that N > The exponent 300 has been rased to 500 n the recent work [7]. Let N be perfect and let q α N, where q s prme. Recall that the notaton q α N stands for the power of q exactly dvdng N, namely q α N but q α+ N. Then 2N = 2q α ( N q α = σ(n = σ(q α σ and snce q α s coprme to σ(q α, t follows that σ(n/q α /q α s an nteger dvsor of 2N. When N = 2 (2 p s even, then σ(n/q α { 2 f q = 2 q α = f q = 2 p. ( N q α Here, we study ths statstc when N s an odd perfect number. We prove: Theorem.. If N s an odd perfect number and q α N s a prme power exactly dvdng N, then σ(n/q α /q α > 5., Ths mproves on a prevous lower bound obtaned by the frst author n hs M. S. thess [3]. The lower bound 5 can lkely be easly mproved although t s not clear to us what the current numercal lmt of ths mprovement should be. We leave ths as a problem for other researchers. In lght of the above result, one may ask whether t could be the case that by mposng an upper bound on the amount σ(n/q α /q α, the number N ends up beng bounded as well. Ths s ndeed so as shown by the followng result. Theorem.2. For every fxed K > 5, there are only fntely many odd perfect numbers N such that for some prme power q α N we have that σ(n/q α /q α < K. All such N are bounded by some effectvely computable number dependng on K. MONTH YEAR
THE FIBONACCI QUARTERLY The proof of Theorem. s elementary. The proof of Theorem.2 uses the arguments from the proof of the partcular case Theorem. together wth two more ngredents. The frst ngredent s a result of Heath Brown [4] to the effect that an odd perfect number N wth s dstnct prme factors cannot exceed 4 4s+. The second ngredent s a well-known result from the theory of Exponental Dophantne Equatons (for the man results n ths area, see [8] regardng the largest prme factor of f(n for large n, where f(x Z[X] s a polynomal wth at least two dstnct roots. One of the man tools for the proof of both Theorems. and.2 s the followng result due to Bang (see []. Lemma.3. Let a > be an nteger. For all n 7, there s a prme factor p of a n whch does not dvde a m for any m < n. Moreover, such a prme p s congruent to modulo n. Throughout the paper, we use p, q, r, P and Q wth or wthout subscrpts for prme numbers. 2. Prelmnares Put N = p λ pλs s qα, where the prmes p,..., p s, q are dstnct and not necessarly ordered ncreasngly. We wrte σ(p λ = m q β, =,...,k, and σ(p λ = q β, = k+,...,s, (2. where m 2 for =,...,k, and α = β + +β s. For both proofs of Theorem. and.2 we wll need facts about equatons (2. for some ether n {,...,k} and wth a fxed value of m 2, or wth {k+,...,s}. Observe that λ s even for all = k+,...,s, and λ s even for at most one {,...,k}. We treat frst the case of a fxed m 2. For smplcty, put p := p, β := β, m := m, and λ := λ for some =,...,k. Then the frst equaton (2. for the ndex s Here, p and q are odd. We prove the followng lemma. Lemma 2.. In equaton (2.2, we have λ+ m 2. = mq β. (2.2 Proof. For a postve nteger n coprme to p let l p (n be the multplcatve order of p modulo n. Let u n := (p n /(p. Then m dvdes u λ+. It s then well-known that λ + s dvsble by the number z p (m defned as where z p (m := lcm[z p (r δ, r δ m], { z p (r δ r δ f p (mod r, = l p (r δ otherwse. Clearly, 2 z p (m m. Equalty s acheved f and only f each prme factor of m s also a prme factor of. Assume that λ+ > m 2. Wrte λ+ = z p (md, where d > z p (m. We look at u d = (p d /( whch s a dvsor of mq β. If d 7, then by Lemma.3 there s a prme factor P of u d whch does not dvde u zp(m. Snce all prme factors of m dvde u zp(m, we must have that P = q. But then all prme factors of u λ+ dvde ether q; hence, u d, or m; hence u zp(m, contradctng Lemma.3. So, we have a contradcton f d 7. 2 VOLUME, NUMBER
ON ODD PERFECT NUMBERS Thus, all prme factors of u d are among the prme factors of u zp(m and so d 6. In partcular, the prme factors of d must be among the prme factors of z p (m, for otherwse, namely f there s some prme factor Q of d whch does not dvde z p (m, then u Q = (p Q /( s a dvsor of u d = (p d /( whch s coprme to u zp(m, a multple of m, whch n turn s false. Thus, all prme factors of d are ndeed among the prme factors of z p (m, and snce d > z p (m, there s a prme factor Q of d whch appears n the factorzaton of d wth an exponent larger than the exponent wth whch t appears n the factorzaton of z p (m. Hence, d Q 2, and snce d 6, we get that Q = 2. Ths mples that u λ+ s a multple of u 4 ; hence, a multple of 4, whch s false. Ths shows that ndeed λ+ m 2. We next treat the case of {k +,...,s}. Lemma 2.2. The equatons mply that α+ s a multple of p λ. Proof. The left equaton n (2.3 s = q β and p λ qα+ q p λ + +p 2 +p = q β, showng that p q β. Ths mples easly that p q lq(p. Now the concluson follows mmedately from the dvsblty relaton from the rght hand sde of equaton (2.3. Let m := m m k. We put M := s =k+ pλ. We label the numbers λ,...,λ k such that β β 2 β k. Applyng Lemma 2.2 for = k +,...,s, we get that s s α+ p α /2 = M /2. (2.4 =2 p α Let Λ := lcm[λ + : =,...,k]. Then Λ k = m2 = m2. Observe that p λ (mod q β for =,...,k. In partcular, Lemma 2.3. One of the followng holds: ( q m; ( q β < (2Mqm (m2 + for =,...,k. =2 (2.3 p Λ (mod q β for all =,...,k. (2.5 Proof. If q m, we are through. So, suppose that q m. We wrte q α+ ( 2M = σ(q α = p λ q m pλ k k. We rase the above equaton to the power Λ and use congruences (2.5 gettng ( Λ ( 2M Λ (mod q β. q m Hence, q β (2M(q Λ ±m Λ. The last expresson s nonzero, snce f t were zero, we would get 2M(q = m, whch s mpossble because 2M(q s a multple of 4, whereas m s a dvsor of 2N, so t s not a multple of 4. Thus, q β (2M(q Λ +m Λ < (2M(q +m Λ < (2Mqm Λ < (2Mqm m2. MONTH YEAR 3
THE FIBONACCI QUARTERLY Ths takes care of thecase = of (. For thecase of a general n (, suppose, by nducton, that 2 and that we have proved that q β < (2Mqm (m2 + Then p λ < σ(p λ = m q β for =,...,. Thus, ( q α+ 2Mp λ = pλ q m holds for all =,...,. p λ p λ k k. (2.6 We rase congruence (2.6 to the power Λ and reduce t modulo q β obtanng q β (2M(q p λ pλ Λ ±m Λ. The last expresson above s not zero snce 2M(q p λ pλ s a multple of 4 and m s not. Hence, whch s what we wanted to prove. q β (2M(q p λ p λ Λ +m Λ m Λ ((2M(q Λ +(q β q β Λ (2qMm Λ q Λ(β + +β < (2qMm m2 (+(m (m 2 + < (2qMm (m2 +, 3. The proof of Theorem. Snce m 5 and at most one of the m s s even for =,...,k, we get that k. Then Lemma 2.3 shows that ether q 5, or Assume that q > 5. Then leadng to q β (20Mq 25 for all =,...,k. (3. q M q α = ( 2M p λ m pλ k k < 2Mqβ + +β k < 2M(20qM 25 < (20qM 26, 3 M 27 q M 27 < (20M 26, whch mples that M < Snce s 8 and k, there exsts {k +,...,s} such that p β < M /7 6. Ths s false because p β 3 2 = 9. Thus, q {3,5}. The equaton from the rght hand sde of (2. wth p := p 2, λ := λ 2 and β := β 2 becomes = q β. Observe that λ+ s odd. If λ+ 7, we get a contradcton from Lemma.3 because q 5. Thus, λ {2,4} and we get one of the four equatons p 2 +p+ = 3 β, p 4 +p 3 +p 2 +p+ = 3 β, p 2 +p+ = 5 β, p 4 +p 3 +p 2 +p+ = 25 β. 4 VOLUME, NUMBER
ON ODD PERFECT NUMBERS Arguments modulo 9 and 25 show frst that the exponents β from the above equatons are n {0, }, whch mmedately mples that none of the above equatons has n fact any solutons. 4. The Proof of Theorem.2 Here, we have m = m m k K, so m K and k (logk/(log2. Heath Brown proved that N < 4 4s+ (see [4]. Hence, we may assume that s > k. Then M 2 s k. Now the argument from the proof of Theorem. shows that ether q K, or q M q α < σ(q α < 2Mq β + +β k < (2KMq (K2 + k+. In the second case, we get that M s bounded, hence s s bounded, so N s bounded by Heath-Brown s result. In the frst case, Lemma.3 shows that n equatons appearng n the rght hand sde of equatons (2., the numbers λ + are bounded for = k+,...,s. Let Γ be a bound for λ for = k +,...,s. For each λ {2,...,Γ} and fxed value of q K, equaton = p λ +p λ + +p+ = q β n the unknowns p and β has only fntely many effectvely computable solutons (p, β. Indeed, ths follows because f we wrte P(t for the largest prme factor of the postve nteger t, then t s known that f f(x Z[X] s a polynomal wth at least two dstnct roots, then P(f(n tends to nfnty wth n n an effectve way. Now we only have to nvoke ths result for the polynomal f(x = (X λ+ /(X whose λ 2 roots are all dstnct, and for the equaton P(f(p = q K. Thus, all prmes p k+,...,p s are bounded, and therefore so s ther number s k. Hence, s s bounded, therefore N s bounded by Heath Brown s result. Acknowledgements.
