2 2 MACIEJ ULAS AND B LAŻEJ ŻMIJA There are many papers devoted to the study of arthmetc propertes of the sequence countng m-ary parttons The case of m = 2 was nvestgated by Euler However, t seems that the frst non-trval result concernng ths case was proved by Churchhouse [5] He proved that the sequence of the 2-adc valuatons of (b(n n N s bounded by 2 More precsely, we have b(0 = 1,b(1 = 1 and f n 2, we have ν 2 (b(n = 2 f and only f n or n 1 can be wrtten n the form 4 r (2u + 1 for some r N + and u N In the remanng cases the value of ν 2 (b(n s equal to 1 Churchhouse also stated some conectures concernng the 2-adc behavour of the dfference a 2 (4n a 2 (n These conectures were ndependently proved by Rødseth [11] and Gupta [7] (see also the presentaton gven n Chapter 10 n the Andrews book These results motvated the study of the dvsblty of the dfference a m (m r+1 n a m (m r n by powers of m (n the case of odd m or by powers of m/2 (n the case of even m See for example the papers of Gupta [10, 8], Andrews [2], Rødseth and Sellers [12, 13] Another knd of generalzatons appeared n a recent work of Gawron, Mska and the frst author [6] More precsely, for k N + one can defne the sequence (A m,k (n n N, where F m (x k = 1 (1 x mn k = A m,k (nx n The sequence (A m,k (n n N, as the sequence (a m (n n N, can be nterpreted n a natural combnatoral way More precsely, the number A m,k (n counts the number of representatons of n as sums of powers of m, where each summand has one among k colors Equvalently, we are lookng for the number of solutons n nonnegatve ntegers of the system ε = k =1 ε,, where ε comes from the m-ary representaton gven by (1 In [6], the sequence of the 2-adc valuatons of A 2,k (n was nvestgated The authors proved that the sequence (ν 2 (A 2,k (n n N wth k = 2 s 1,s N +, s bounded by 2 In fact the precse descrpton whether ν 2 (A 2,k (n = 1 or 2 s presented n the paper Let m = p, where p s a prme number A queston arses: s t possble to fnd a smple expressonfor an exponent k, such that the sequence (ν p (A p,k (n n N s bounded or even can be descrbed n smple terms? Ths natural queston was the man motvaton for wrtng ths paper As we wll see the requred generalzaton can be gven and s presented n Theorem 31 Let us descrbe the content of the paper n some detals In Secton 2 we present some prelmnary result needed n the sequel and present the proof of the lemma whch contans precse nformaton on the p-adc valuaton of certan sums whch arecloselyrelatedtothecoeffcentsofthepowerseresexpansonoff p (x r, where r {1,,p 1} In Secton 3, among other thngs we present the computaton of the exact value of the p-adc valuaton of the number A p,(p 1(p s 1(n, where p P 3 and s N + More precsely, for n p s, we prove the equalty ν p (A p,(p 1(p s 1(n = 1 Note that the number k = (p 1(p s 1 for p = 2 reduces to the exponent consdered n [6] However, n the mentoned paper the sequence ofthe 2-adcvaluatons of2 s 1- colored parttons s not eventually constant (and t s not perodc Ths shows strkng dfference between the case of p = 2 and p 3 Moreover, we obtan some result concernng the boundedness of the sequence (ν p (A p,(p 1(ups 1(n n N for p P 3,u {2,,p 1} and s N +
3 ON p-adic VALUATIONS OF COLORED p-ary PARTITIONS 3 Fnally, n the last secton we state some conectures on the shape of exponents k whch (accordng to numercal calculatons lead to bounded (but not-eventually constant sequences (ν p (A p,k (n n N 2 Prelmnary results and the man lemma Before we state our theorems we wll need some notaton and prelmnary results concernng varous obects related to unque representaton of nteger n n the base p For a gven p (non-necessarly a prme, an nteger n and {0,,p 1} we defne k N p (,n = { : n = ε p,ε {0,,p 1} and ε = } =0 The abovenumber counts the number of the dgts equal to n the base p representaton of the nteger n From the defnton, we mmedately deduce the followng equaltes: { N p (,n, f (2 N p (,0 = 0, N p (,pn+ = N p (,n+1, f = Lemma 21 Let r {1,,p 1} We have F p (x r = (1 x pn r = D p,r (nx n, where p 1 ( Np(,n r (3 D p,r (n = ( 1 Np(,n, wth the conventon that ( a b = 0 for b > a and 0 0 = 1 Moreover, for {0,,p 1} and n N + we have ( r D p,r (pn+ = ( 1 D p,r (n Proof The frst equalty s a smple consequence of the unqueness of the base p representaton of a gven number n and the equalty r ( r (1 x pn r = ( 1 x pn =0 Indeed, the number D p,r (n can be wrtten as D p,r (n = { p 1 ( 1Np(,n( r Np(,n, f Np (,n = 0 for all > r 0, f N p (,n 0 for some > r, and hence our compact formula In order to get the second part of our lemma we note that N p (,n = 1 for n {0,1,r} and N p (,n = 0 for n {r +1,p 1} Wth our conventon
4 4 MACIEJ ULAS AND B LAŻEJ ŻMIJA we have that D p,r (n = ( 1 n( r n n ths case Wrtng now n = pn + for some {0,,p 1} we get p 1 ( Np(,pn D p,r (pn + = ( 1 Np(,pn + r + p 1 ( Np(,n = ( 1 Np(,n r ( Np(,n ( 1 (Np(,n +1 r +1 = ( 1 ( r and our lemma follows p 1 ( 1 Np(,n ( r Np(,n = ( 1 ( r D p,r (n, The above results are true wthout the assumpton p P However, from now up to the end of the paper we assume that p s an odd prme Moreover, n order to shorten the notaton a bt we defne the number D p (n as In partcular D p (n 0 for all n N D p (n := D p,p 1 (n Lemma 22 Let k N + and suppose that p 1 k Then F p (x k (1 x k p 1 (mod p νp(k+1 Proof Letus recallthat fthe congruencea b (mod p holds, then foranyt N + we have a pt b pt (mod p t+1 From the defnton of the functon F p (x we get (1 xf p (x = n=1 1 1 x pn = F p (x p, and thus we mmedately deduce that F p (x p 1 (1 x (mod p Invokng now the property mentoned above wth t = ν p (k we get F p (x pνp(k (p 1 (1 x pνp(k (mod p νp(k+1 Wrte k = p νp(k (p 1δ Rasng the both sdes of the last congruence to the power δ we get the result We are ready to present the crucal lemma whch wll be the man tool n our study of the p-adc valuaton of the number A p,(p 1(up s 1(n n the sequel More precsely, the lemma contans nformaton about behavour of the p-adc valuaton of the expresson ( u ( 1 D p (n Lemma 23 Let p 3 be prme and u {1,,p 1} Let n p be of the form n = n p s+1 + kp s + for some n N,k {1,,p 1},s N + and {0,,p 1} Then the followng equalty holds: ( ( u ν p ( 1 D p (n ( ( p+u 1 = ν p (p k +k ( p+u 1 p+
