On the fundamental eigenvalue ratio of the Lalacian Jacqueline Fleckinger, Evans M. Harrell II, François de Thélin arxiv:math/0403v [math.sp] 3 Oct 2004 Abstract It is shown that the fundamental eigenvalue ratio λ 2 λ of the Lalacian is bounded by a quantity deending only on the dimension and. Mathematics subject classification 35J60 35J70. keywords: Lalacian, eigenvalue ga I. Introduction The linear Lalacian on a domain or a manifold can be realized as a self adjoint oerator, and the theory of its sectrum is a well develoed subject [4,5]. For the Lalacian on a domain, with vanishing Dirichlet boundary conditions, it has been known since the work of Anane and Tsouli [] that a sequence of real eigenvalues can be defined by a variational rocedure analogous to the min-max rincile for the linear case = 2, but many rather basic questions about the sectrum remain to be addressed. For background on the Lalacian, which arrives from the first variation of the functional u, () u we refer to [8, 9, 6]. In this article will be a smooth, bounded Euclidean domain, and u will vary in the Sobolev sace W, 0 (), corresonding to Dirichlet conditions on the boundary. Several useful estimates are available in the linear case for the lowest two eigenvalues, esecially the lowest, or fundamental, eigenvalue, and some of these have been extended to the nonlinear cases. For instance, see [6, 7, 8]. In this article we seek information on the ratio of the first two eigenvalues, which to our knowledge has not been much studied excet when = 2, for which case it is known, for examle, that the ratio is bounded universally above by the ratio attained when is a ball [2]. We are guided by some earlier analysis of the case = 2 in [, 2, 3] as well as [2, 3], but the unavailability of the sectral theorem eliminates some essential arts of the analysis. Therefore we attemt to rely instead on certain integral inequalities as in [0]. c 2004 by the authors. 2 Let us recall some roerties of the Dirichlet Lalacian:. The Lalacian is defined for u W, () by u := ( ) u 2 u. (Here we always equi the Lalacian with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions.) 2. It is then natural to define an eigenvalue λ j as a value of λ for which the eigenvalue roblem u := λ u 2 u in ; u = 0 on (2) has a nontrivial solution. 3. It is not, however, known whether every such quantity is a variational eigenvalue as for the case = 2. Of course it is also ossible to consider the variational eigenvalues but it is not known in general whether these numbers coincide. evertheless, it has long been known that the first eigenvalue λ, which is isolated and simle, is the infimum, for u W, 0 (), of the Rayleigh quotient defined by (). 4. The infimum is achieved for a multile of a function ϕ that may be chosen ositive on. Henceforth we imose the normalization ϕ =. The air (λ, ϕ ) is referred to as the rincial eigenair. 5. In 996 Anane and Tsouli [] gave a characterization of the variational eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Lalacian For any ositive integer j, let λ j := inf max C C j u C u, (3) u with C j = {C W, 0 ()/C = C; γ(c) j}, where γ denotes the Krasnosel skii genus [4]. (By definition, the Krasnosel skii genus of a subset A of a Banach sace B is the smallest integer j for which there exists a nontrivial continuous odd maing A B.) 6. Finally, it was roved by Anane and Tsouli that λ 2 defined by (3) is effectively the second eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Lalacian defined on, in the sense that the eigenvalue roblem (2) has no other eigenvalue between λ and λ 2. Hence the ratio λ 2 /λ is well defined and amenable to variational analysis. Uer bounds on the fundamental eigenvalue ratio When = 2, bounds on λ 2 /λ can be derived from variational estimates of the ga λ 2 λ. When 2, the same will be true here in certain situations, but for > 2 we are led by Lemma 3. in [0] to consider instead the difference λ 2 ˆkλ with a suitable constant ˆk. In [0] constants (deending on and the dimension ) were defined as: and m := max 0 x (( x)x + ( x ), (4) 2, = : ˆm = m = ˆk = k = 2 ( 2, 2 : ˆm = 2 ( 2) ( 2) 2 ( ) ˆk = ( (5) < 2, = : ˆm = m ˆk = k = < 2, 2 : ˆm = 2 (2 ) 2 m ˆk = Our main result is 2
Theorem. Let be a smooth, dimensional bounded Euclidean domain, and denote the two lowest Dirichlet eigenvalues for the Lalacian by λ, λ 2. If 2 and >, then or, equivalently, For 2, or, equivalently, Γ := λ 2 λ ˆm We reare the roof with two estimates. uncertainty rincile inequality: ( λ, (6) [ ( λ 2 + ˆm ]. (7) λ Γ := λ 2 ˆkλ ˆm 2 λ, (8) λ 2 [ˆk + ˆm 2 ]. (9) λ The first is a standard (and known) Lemma 2. Given a bounded domain IR, with >, for any u W, 0 (), ( ) u x 2 u 2, where x = (x,..., x ) are the Cartesian coordinates and where x := (x + +x )/. In articular, ( ) ϕ x 2 λ, (0) This follows easily from an inequality of Boggio, as shown in [0]. Lemma 3. Given a bounded domain IR, if 2, Proof. with = x 2 ϕ λ. = ϕ = ϕ x = [ ] / [ ϕ as usual, by Hölder s inequality. Therefore [ λ 3 x ϕ ϕ x 2 ϕ x 2 ϕ ]. ] /,
If = 2, this establishes the claim. Otherwise, > 2, that is, <, and by Hölder s inequality, [ λ [ λ [ = λ ( x 2 ϕ ϕ x 2 ϕ x 2 ϕ ] [ ]. ( 2) ( ) ϕ ] ] 2 Proof of Theorem. For a unified treatment, we write Γ := λ 2 ˆkλ, noting that for 2, ˆk =. Let δ be a given real constant and set ω := {x = (x,..., x ), with x k < δ}. Assume that δ is chosen so that meas(ω) > 0 and meas( \ ω) > 0. In other words δ min < δ < δ max. ow choose g C 0 () such that g(x) x k =δ = 0. We define where C := {ϕ G α,β : α IR, β IR; α + β = }, G α,β := g(x)(αχ ω + βχ \ω ). (2) It is easy to see that the set C has the following roerties; () C = C (change α to α and β to β). (2) γ(c) = 2. From the variational characterization (4), for any k, any δ, and any function g C 0 () satisfying g(x) xk =δ = 0, it follows that where with and λ 2 max R(α, β), (3) α + β = R(α, β) := (α, β) := D(α, β) := From Lemma 3. in [0], it follows that (α, β) ˆm = ˆm (α, β) D(α, β) (ϕ G α,β ) ϕ G α,β. (G α,β )ϕ + ˆk ϕ G α,β ( ϕ ) (G α,β )ϕ + ˆkλ G α,β ϕ. 4
Therefore: Γ = λ 2 ˆkλ ˆm α ω max ϕ g + β \ω ϕ g α + β = α ω ϕ G α,β + β \ω ϕ G α,β, suosing that G α,β = 0 on {x j = δ}. The maximization in this exression is elementary: writing t for α, the roblem is to maximize an exression of the form at+b( t) ct+d( t) for 0 t. Unless this exression is constant and equal to b d = a c = a+b c+d, its derivative is always nonzero. If not constant, it is therefore maximized when t = 0 as b d or else when t = as a. We conclude that c { } Γ ˆm max ω ϕ ω ϕ x j δ, \ω ϕ \ω ϕ x j δ. (4) Observe that each of the integrals in (4) deends continuously on δ, and that as δ aroaches the minimal value of x j in, ω ϕ +, while ω ϕ x j δ \ω ϕ \ω ϕ x j δ remains bounded. The converse is the case as δ aroaches the maximal value of x j in. By continuity, there is a value of δ for which ω ϕ ω ϕ x j δ = \ω ϕ \ω ϕ x j δ = ϕ ϕ x j δ. Hence ϕ x j δ ˆm Γ. Let us henceforth choose the origin of the coordinate system so that δ = 0, and then sum on j, obtaining ϕ x ˆm Γ. Therefore Γ ˆm ϕ x. (5) Suose now that > and 2. According to the Cauchy Schwarz inequality, ( = 2 ( ϕ = ) 2 ϕ /2 x /2 ϕ /2 x /2 ϕ x ϕ x. (6) We recall that since the dimension is finite and since 2, we have x x 2. Hence, from (6) and (0) we derive: ϕ x ϕ x 2 5 ( λ ϕ x. (7)
Combining (7) with (5), we derive (6) and (7) for 2. In case 2, a tighter bound can be derived. Since for 2, x deduce from Inequality (5) that 2 2 x 2, we Γ ˆm 2 ϕ x 2. (8) Combining (8) with Lemma 3, we derive Inequalities (8) and (9). It is reasonable to ask how shar is this bound. Unfortunately, other than in the one dimensional (or radial) case, eigenvalues of the Lalacian are only known numerically, and then essentially only the rincial eigenvalue [5]. A comarison is ossible in onedimension, where the eigenvalues are known exlicitly [6, 7] and λ 2 λ = 2. Since the Hardy constant in one dimension is, this comares to our bound of 2 ( +(( ) for 2. For = 2 it is reasonably shar (5 rather than 4), but for higher values of it is less so. As a final remark, we observe that it has been shown recently in [4] that for the first two eigenvalues Λ, Λ 2 of the Lindqvist eigenvalue roblem, Λ k = lim λ k () /. As a direct consequence of Theorem, we therefore have: Corollary 4. lim ( ) / λ2 () ˆm. λ () =========================== REFERECES [] A.
