κ-deformed Kinematics and Addition Law for Deformed Velocities arxiv:hep-th/0070v1 Jul 00 Jerzy Lukierski Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Wroc law pl. M. Borna 9, Wroc law, Poland Anatol Nowicki Institute of Physics, University of Zielona Góra pl. S lowiański 6, Zielona Góra, Poland February 1, 008 Abstract In κ-deformed relativistic framework we consider three different definitions of κ-deformed velocities and introduce corresponding addition laws. We show that one of the velocities has classical relativistic addition law. The relation of velocity formulae with the coproduct for fourmomenta and noncommutative space-time structure is exhibited. 1 Introduction Recently due to increasing interest in deformed relativistic space-time framework see. e.g. [1-6]) it is important to understand the deformation of Einsteinian relativistic kinematics. In particular the problems occur if the classical Poincaré symmetries are replaced by quantum ones, with modification Supported by KBN grant 5PO3B0560 To appear in special issue of Acta Physica Polonica B, dedicated to 60-th birthday of Stefan Pokorski 1
of classical Abelian addition law for the momenta. Here we shall consider as distinguished example the so called κ-deformed quantum Poincaré symmetries see e.g. [7-11]), which recently were also used as possible framework for describing the quantum gravity effects see. e.g. [1-16]). The κ-deformed relativistic Hopf algebra framework in bicrossproduct basis is characterized by classical Lorentz algebra of O3, 1) generators M µν M i, N i ), commuting fourmomenta P µ P i, P 0 E ) and κ-deformed commutation relations of threemomenta P i with boost generators N i : c [N i, P j ] i [ δ ij κc1 e E κc ) + 1 P κc ] i κc P ip j 1) All remaining Poincaré algebra relations remain classical. The mass square Casimir M for κ-deformed Poincaré algebra in bicrossproduct basis looks as follows [3,8,9] cosh E κc 1 κ c e E κc p 1 + M ) κ One can consider the formula ) as describing the deformation of classical energy-momentum dispersion relation ω p) p +m 0c ) 1/ for free particles [3] ) ω p) E κ p) κc ln 1 + M κ 1 + M + p κc κ c κc ln cosh m 0 κ ) sinh m 0 κ ) + p 3) κ c where the value M is related with the rest mass of particle as follows [15] M κ cosh m 0 κ 1). 4) The quantum group structure of κ-deformed Poincaré algebra is provided by nonprimitive coproducts, which for threemomenta P i and energy E take the following form P i P i 1 + e E κc P i, E E E. 5) The κ-deformed relativistic framework is described by dual pair of Hopf algebras describing κ-deformed Poincaré algebra and κ-deformed Poincaré group
[17-19]. Considering noncommutative translations x µ of κ-deformed Poincaré group as describing noncommutative space-time coordinates one can show that [ x 0, x i ] i h κc x i, [ x i, x j ] 0. 6) The relations 6) describe κ-deformed Minkowski space [17,9,3]. Further, by considering semidirect product of κ-deformed Poincaré algebra and κ- Poincaré group so-called Heisenberg double [18]) one obtains κ-deformed generalized phase space [18 19]. The aim of this note is to consider the possible definitions of κ-deformed velocities and study their addition law. Due to non-primitive coproduct 5) one can introduce three different velocity formulae: i) The one following from classical Hamilton equation Ẋ i V i E κ p). 7) By considering κ-deformed phase space in bicrossproduct basis see e.g. [18 0]) one confirms that the symplectic form defining Hamiltonian equations 7) are not deformed. ii) Two other types of velocities are linked with nonabelian addition law of three-momenta. By considering P i 1 p i, 1 P i δ L p i one can write p + e E κc δ L p p + δ p δ L p e E κc δ p. 8) We define the left-covariant velocity as follows: V L i E κ p + δ p) E κ p) lim δp i 0 δ L p i e E p) E κ p) κc e E p) κc V i. 9) Using the assignment P i 1 δ R p i, 1 P i p i one obtains δ R p + e δe κc p p + δ p δ R p δ p + 1 e δe κc ) p κc p E ) δ p. 10) where assuming that momenta and velocities are parallel, i.e. p V E p) we used the relation p E δ p i ) p E)δ p i. 11) 3
Using 10) one can introduce right-covariant velocity V R i E κ p + δ p i ) E κ p) lim δp i 0 δ R p i κc p V ) 1 E κ p). 1) The velocities 7) have been introduced in standard basis still in 199 by Bacry [1] in bicrossproduct basis see []). The velocities Vi L were introduced in [3,4] and both velocities 9) and 1) for massless case in [4] as left and right group velocities. We shall show that the most interesting with its properties is the velocity Vi R - it has classical velocity addition law, which for parallel velocities 0, 0, V1 R R ), 0, 0, V ) looks as follows 1 V 1 R + V R. 13) 1 + V 1 RV R c V R We shall discuss below all the three velocities described by formulae 7), 9) and 1) for arbitrary value of mass parameter M see also 4)). Three Velocities - General Properties Three velocities 7), 9) and 1) are related with each other by the following formulae V L i V R i where from 7) and 1-) follows that 1 e Eκ p) κc 3 V i, V i κc p v, 14a) 14b) V κ One can calculate that 1 p ) 1 e E κc p κ c V c e E κc 1 p e E κc κ [ cosh m 0 κ ) e E κc ]. 15) sinh m 0 ) κ cosh m 0 ) E κ e 1 Further we denote V V, E E κ p) and p p. ) κc. 16) 4

From the formulae 14) and 15) one gets V L κ e E κc p 1 e E κc p κ c ) p κ [ cosh m 0 ) ]. 18) E κ e κc and after simple algebraic manipulation V R κ p ) 1 e E κc + p κ c p e E κc κ [. 19) e E κc cosh m 0)] κ We get V L ) c sinh m 0 κ 1 ) cosh m 0 ) E κ e V R ) c 1 sinh m 0 κ ) cosh m 0 κ ) e E ) κc ) κc, 0). 1) One can show: i) for all energies V L ) c and V R ) c ii) for M < E < we get dv L ) > 0 and dv R ) de de 0) and 1) are monotonic. iii) if M 0 equivalent to m 0 0) both velocities Vi L classical absolute value i.e. V L ) V R ) c > 0, i.e. both functions and V R i 3 Right Group Velocity - Addition Formula Let us write the formula 19) as follows: The observation iii) has been made also in [4]. have p κ Bm 0, E) V R, ) 5

Using ) we have the formula From 7) and 4.b) one gets pα) κbm 0, Eα)) W R. 7) W R Bm 0, E) WE, n p ;α) + Bm 0, E) 1 { V R + n [ n V R )cosh α 1) c sinh α ]}, 8) and further we obtain W R V R + n[ n u)cosh α 1) c sinh α] cosh α[1 1 n u) tanh α]. 9) c Introducing the relative velocity u of two κ-deformed Lorentz frames, one at rest α 0) and second described by boost parameter α nα u c n tanh α, 30) 6
the relation 9) can be written in the form see e.g. [6]) W R V 1 + R 1 ) u 1/ V c R 1 u c V + u 1 + R u V R ) 1/ u 1 u u u c. 31) The formula 31) describes the general Einsteinian composition law of two arbitrary three-velocities V R, u, which for parallel velocities V R u reduces to the formula 13). It should be stressed that basic ingredient in the derivation of classical addition law 31) is the relation ). If we use other two formulae 15) or 18) for deformed velocities, analogous reasoning leads to the deformation of classical addition formulae 13) and 31). To complete the argument we shall show that the definition 30) is equivalent to the relation ). Indeed, let us solve the relation pα) 0 describing the transformation from the moving system with nonvanishing momentum pα 0) to the rest system with p 0 α 0). From 4.b) one gets pα) 0 p + n p)cosh α 1) κc Bm 0, E) sinh α 0. 3) Further if n p one obtains p p ) p cosh α κc Bm 0, E) sinh α 0. 33) We see that inserting in 33) the velocity u from formula 30) u c tanhα) we obtain the relation ) p κbm 0, E)u). 4 Velocity and Noncommutative Space-Time In order to describe velocity formula in noncommutative space-time one should use the corresponding deformed Hamiltonian formalism. For κ-deformed relativistic phase space such a framework has been proposed in [3] 3 The κ-deformed noncommutative phase space kinematics is determined by basic Poisson brackets of relativistic phase space variables Y A x µ, p µ ) given in bicrossproduct basis by the following relations [18,19]: 3 see formulae ) and 4. in [3]. {p i, x j } δ ij, 7
Writing down 34) in compact form {p 0, x 0 } 1, {p 0, x i } 0, {x 0, x i } x i κc, {x 0, p i } p i κc, {p µ, p ν } 0. 34) {Y A, Y B } ω κ) AB x, p). we obtain the κ-deformed Hamilton equations describing evolution with respect to the parameter s dy A ds H κ) ωκ) AB. 35) Y B where H κ) H κ) x, p) determines the dynamics. Assuming translational invariance one should take one-particle Hamiltonian as H κ) H κ) p 0, p) and explicitely from 35) one gets ds ds Hκ), 36a) 1 κc p i H κ) + Hκ) p 0. 36b) and dpµ 0 i.e. p ds µ are s-independent. The physical interpretation of the parameter s depends on the choice of the Hamiltonian H κ). We can consider the following two basic cases: i) The Hamiltonian H κ describes the energy dispersion relation E E κ p) by means of the formula H κ) H κ p 0, p) cp 0 E κ p). In such a case if κ standard relativistic framework) i.e. H p 0, p) cp 0 c p + m 0 c ) 1/ one can identify the parameter s with time variable 1 x ds 0 s + const.) and one obtains the standard velocity formula p i. 37) p + m 0c ) 1/ If κ 0 such identification is not possible, because from 36b) it follows that ds c 1 κc p H κ i. 38) 8
and further we get ds ds Hκ c 1 1 κc p i H κ ). 39) i.e after using 7) we obtain our favoured velocity formula 14b). ii) One can use also as the Hamiltonian H κ) the κ-invariant mass Casimir by assuming that H κ) M c 4. In classical relativistic case H ) E c p c p 0 p ) the parameter s corresponds to Poincaré-invariant length parameter. One gets ds c p i, ds c p 0. 40) and on the mass-shell H ) m 0 c4 const.) we obtain the formula 37). In general case κ ) the deformed mass shell condition ) can be written as identity H κ) E κ p), p) M c 4 where E κ p) is given by 3). One obtains H κ) p 0 E κ + Hκ) 0 Hκ) After inserting 41) into 36a-36b) one gets V i H κ) p 0. 41) ds V H κ) i, p 0 ds and we obtain again the formula 14b) κc p iv i ) H κ) p 0. 4) 5 Final Remarks Following the philosophy advocated firstly by Majid [7] quantum-deformed space-time kinematics describes generalized symmetries and noncommutative geometries at ultra-short Planck scales. The real challenge is to find observable physical effects caused by such modification of short distance behaviour of quantum phenomena. The study presented here has much more modest aim: it provides a contribution to the description of kinematics obtained in the framework of deformed quantum theories. It should be pointed out that such a kinematical framework requires still several problems to be solved, in particular understanding the relation between κ-deformed kinematics and description of macroscopic bodies. The 9
basic question is to understand how the κ-effects cancel if we consider very large summ of elementary objects described by deformed κ-kinematics. We would like to stress that in such a case we should obtain for macroscopic bodies the classical relativistic kinematics. References [1] S. Dopplicher, K. Fredenhagen and J. Roberts, Phys. Lett.
