We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Green currents in codimension one. It is known that we may define a linear pullback map f : H, (X, R) H, (X, R). In general, however, this linear action is not compatible with the dynamics of the map f. We say that f is -regular whenever (f n ) = (f ) n for n =, 2,... on H, (X, R). In the sequel, we will assume that f is -regular. By a standard Perron Frobenius type argument, there exists α H, (X, R) such that f α = λ (f )α, where λ (f ) is defined to be the spectral radius of f.let H := { α H, (X, R) : f α = λ (f )α }. Then it follows that H N H H, (X, R) and H N has a non-empty interior in H. In general, a class α H N is not numerically effective (nef). Boucksom [3] has defined the minimal multiplicity ν(α,x) of a class α H, (X, R) at a point x X. This is a local obstruction to the numerical effectiveness of α H, (X, R) at x.the set E nn (α) := { x X : ν(α,x) > 0 } is called the non-nef locus of α. A property of E nn (α) is that if C X is an irreducible algebraic curve such that α C<0, then C E nn (α). WeletI f k denote the indeterminacy locus of the iterate f k. Theorem. Let f : X X be a dominant meromorphic map. If f is -regular and λ (f ) >, then E nn (α) k= I f k for every α H N. As a corollary, we obtain that every curve C such that α C<0 is a subset of k= I f k. Moreover, the non-nef locus E nn (α) does not contain any hypersurface of X. Many authors have constructed positive closed invariant currents to represent the invariant classes. These constructions, however, assume that the class is nef or sometimes even Kähler. Here we consider some cases where the invariant class is merely pseudo-effective (). Let us fix a smooth representative θ α. We say that an upper semi-continuous function φ L (X) is a θ-psh function if θ + dd c φ 0 in the sense of currents. T α is a positive closed (, ) current satisfying f T α = λt α. Furthermore, () T α is minimally singular among the invariant currents which belong to the class α. (2) T α is extreme within the cone of positive closed (, ) currents whose cohomology class belongs to R + α. We have seen that such α exists for λ = λ (f ), but we can also allow other values of λ as well. We also prove that ( ) is a necessary condition under natural dynamical assumptions (see Proposition 4.3). The following result provides and algebraic criterion for the existence of Green currents when X is projective. Theorem.3 Let X be a projective manifold and f : X X be a dominant -regular rational map. Assume that λ := λ (f ) > is a simple eigenvalue of f, with f α f = λα f. If α f C 0 for every algebraic irreducible curve C Ef := f(i f ), then λ n vmin α f n 0 in L (X). In the last part of this work, we present some examples of birational maps in higher dimensions which fall into the framework of Theorem.2; nevertheless, the invariant class is not nef. If a i 0 for every i S, then condition ( ) in Theorem.2 holds. The outline of the paper is as follows. In Sect. 2, we provide the basic definitions and results that we will use in the sequel. In Sect. 3, we discuss invariance properties of closed convex cones in H, (X, R) and prove Theorem.. Section 4 is devoted to the proof of Theorem.2. We also discuss some cases for which ( ) holds in Sect. 4. In Sect. 5, we discuss rational maps and prove Theorem.3. In the last section, we prove Theorems.4 and.5. 2 Preliminaries 2. Positive Cones Let X be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension k, and ω be a fixed Kähler form satisfying X ωk =. All volumes will be computed with respect to the probability volume form dv := ω k.leth, (X) denote the Dolbeault cohomology group, and let H 2 (X, Z), H 2 (X, R), and H 2 (X, C) denote the de Rham cohomology groups with coefficients in Z, R, C.Wealsoset H, (X, R) := H, (X) H 2 (X, R). Definition 2. Aclassα H, (X, R) is called Kähler if α can be represented by a Kähler form. We denote the set of all Kähler classes by K. A class α is called numerically effective (nef) if it lies in the closure of the Kähler cone. The set of all nef classes will be denoted by H, nef (X, R).

Notice that a qpsh function is locally the sum of a smooth function and a psh function. A closed (, ) current T is called almost positive if there exists a real smooth (, ) form γ such that T γ. The Lelong number of a positive closed (, ) current T is defined by ν(t,x) := lim inf z x φ(z) log x z, where φ is a local potential for T, that is, T = dd c φ near x. This definition is independent of the choice of the potential φ and the local coordinates. If T is almost positive, then the Lelong numbers are still well defined since the negative part contributes for zero. It follows from a theorem of Thie that ν([d],x)= mult x D, where [D] is the current of integration along an effective divisor and mult x is the multiplicity of D at x. We denote the sub-level sets by E c (T ) := {x X : ν(t,x) c}. A theorem of Siu asserts that E c (T ) is an analytic set of codimension at least. We also set E + (T ) := E c (T ). c>0 Aclassα H, (X, R) is called pseudo-effective () if there exists a positive closed (, ) current T such that {T }=α. The set of all classes, H, (X, R), is a closed convex cone containing H, nef (X, R). A positive closed current T is called Kähler if there exists small ɛ>0 such that T ɛω. A class α H, (X, R) is said to be big if there exists a Kähler current T such that α ={T }. We denote the set of all big classes by H (,) big (X, R). This is an open convex cone, and coincides with the interior of H, (X, R). Finally, we stress that these definitions coincide with the classical ones in complex geometry [6]. Theorem 2.2 [3, 7] Aclassα H, nef (X, R) is big if and only if αn Currents with Analytic Singularities Following [6] and [3], a closed almost positive (, ) current T = θ + dd c φ is said to have analytic singularities along a subscheme V(I) defined by a coherent ideal sheaf I if there exists c>0 and locally φ = c 2 log( f f N 2) + u, where u is a smooth function and f,...,f N s are holomorphic functions which are local generators of I. Blowing up X along V(I) and resolving the singularities in the sense of Hironaka, we obtain a modification μ : X X. Theorem 2.3 [6] Let T γ be an almost positive closed (, ) current on X. Then there exists a sequence of positive real numbers ɛ n decreasing to 0 and a sequence of almost positive closed (, ) currents T n {T } with analytic singularities such that T n T weakly, T n γ ɛ n ω, and ν(t n,x) increases uniformly to ν(t,x) with respect to x X. 2.3 Currents with Minimal Singularities Let ϕ and ϕ 2 be two qpsh functions. Following [8], we say that ϕ is less singular than ϕ 2 if ϕ 2 ϕ + C for some constant C. IfT and T 2 are two closed almost positive currents, we write T i = θ i + dd c ϕ i, where θ i {T i } is a smooth closed form and ϕ i is a qpsh function. We say that T is less singular than T 2 if ϕ 2 ϕ + C. Notice that this definition is independent of the choice of the representatives θ i and potentials ϕ i. For a class α H, (X, R) and a real smooth (, ) form γ, we denote the set of all closed almost positive (, ) currents T α satisfying T γ by α[γ ]. Since the right-hand side in the definition of ν(α,x) is increasing as ɛ decreases, the sup coincides with the limit. This definition is independent of the choice of the Kähler form ω. We also remark that for every positive closed (, ) current T α and x X, wehave0 ν(α,x) ν(t,x) C, where C>0isaconstant depending only on the cohomology class α.

Aclassα H, (X, R) is called nef in codimension if ν(α,d) = 0 for every prime divisor D X. We denote the set of all such classes by E. It follows from the next proposition that E H, (X, R) is also a closed convex cone. Proposition 2.4 [3] Let α H, (X, R) beaclass (i) α is nef if and only if ν(α,x) = 0 for every x X. (ii) α ν(α,x) is sub-additive and homogenous in α for every x X. (iii) α ν(α,x) is lower semi-continuous on H, (X, R) and continuous on H, big (X, R) for every x X. That is, x E nn(α). To prove the reverse inclusion, let x E nn (α). Then by the definition of ν(α,x), there exists ɛ>0 such that 0 <ν(tα,ɛ min,x).now,lett α[ɛ] have analytic singularities. An irreducible algebraic curve C is called α-negative if the intersection product α C<0. Proposition 2.9 [4] For α H, (X, R), every α-negative curve C is contained in E nn (α). Remark 2.0 Thus, the non-nef locus contains the union of the α-negative curves. However, in general, the non-nef locus of a pseudo-effective class α is not equal to union of α-negative curves (see [4]). 3 Dynamics of Meromorphic Maps Let X be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension k and f : X X be a meromorphic map that is f is holomorphic on the set X\I f such that the closure of the graph Ɣ f of f : X\I f X in X X is an irreducible analytic set of dimension k. Let π i : X X X denote the canonical projections. Then I f coincides with the set of points z for which π (z) Ɣ f contains more than one point. The set I f, called the indeterminacy set of f, is also an analytic set of codimension at least 2. In fact, for every z I f,thesetπ (z) Ɣ f has positive dimension. Moreover, X\I f is the largest open set where f is holomorphic. We also set I := n I f n. For a subset Z X, we define the total transform of Z under f by f(z):= π 2 ( π (Z) Ɣ f ). With the above convention, we define E f := f(i f ). We say that f is dominant if the projection π 2 restricted to Ɣ f is surjective. This is equivalent to saying that the Jacobian determinant of f does not vanish identically

It is well known that f induces a linear action on H p,p (X, R) as follows. Let Ɣ f denote a desingularization of Ɣ f. Then the diagram Ɣ f π π 2 X f X commutes. Let θ be a smooth closed (p, p) form on X. Then we set f θ = (π ) (π 2 ) θ, where (π 2 ) θ is a smooth form and the latter is push-forward as a current. Since pull-back and push-forward commute with the d operator, f θ is a d-closed (p, p) current. Then we set f {θ}={f θ}, where {θ} denotes the de Rham cohomology class of θ and {f θ} is the de Rham cohomology class of f θ. Similarly, one can define push-forward by f θ = (π 2 ) (π ) θ. It follows that the action of pull-back on H p,p (X, R) is dual to that of push-forward on H k p,k p (X, R) with respect to the intersection product. We say that f is p-regular whenever (f n ) = (f ) n on H p,p (X, R) as linear maps for n =, 2,... We also denote δ p (f ) := f ω p ω k p, X\I f and the p-th dynamical degree of f by [ ( λ p (f ) := lim sup δp f n )] n. n In particular, if f is p-regular, then λ p (f ) coincides with the spectral radius of f H p,p (X,R). 3. Invariant Classes and Singularities We denote the set of all positive closed (, ) currents by T (X). Following [9], we define the pull-back of T as follows. We fix a point x 0 X\I f ; then locally we can write T = dd c u for a psh function u near f(x 0 ) and define f T = dd c u f near x 0 that is independent of the choice of the local potential u. Therefore, we obtain a well-defined positive closed (, ) current on X\I f. Now, since I f is an analytic set of codimension at least 2, it follows from [22] that it extends trivially to a unique positive closed (, ) current f T on X. Furthermore, since f is dominant, the action T f T is continuous with respect to weak topology on positive closed (, )

Notice that H (X, R) is a closed, convex cone which is strict (i.e., H,, (X, R) H (X, R) ={0}). Since H, (X, R) is invariant under the linear action f : H, (X, R) H, (X, R), it follows from a Perron Frobenius type argument [0] that there exists a class α H, (X, R) such that f α = r (f ) α, where r (f ) is the spectral radius of f H, (X,R). In particular, if f is -regular, then r (f ) = λ (f ). The following argument is adapted from [3]. We choose a basis for H, (X, C) = H, (X, R) R C so that the associated matrix of f is in Jordan form. Let J λj,m j denote its Jordan blocks for j r. Finally, since f is -regular, I does not contain any divisors, and hence, α E. Without the assumption α H N, the assertion of Theorem 3.3(2) is not true in general. The following example was communicated by V. Guedj. Example 3.4 Let f : P 2 P 2 be a holomorphic map of degree λ 2 with a totally invariant point p, i.e., f (p) = p. We define π : X P 2 to be the blow-up of P 2 at p. Letf X denote the induced map and E := π (p) denote the exceptional fiber. Then fx {E}=λ{E}. It seems that the first two assumptions (-regularity and λ > ) in Theorem.2 are quite natural. Indeed, if λ (f ) =, then it follows from the concavity of the function j log(λ j ) and the upper bound for the entropy [2] that h top (f ) = 0. What about the condition ( )? If α is a Kähler class, then vα min 0; thus, ( ) holds. More generally, if α can be represented by a semi-positive form, then vα min is bounded; hence, ( ) holds. This is the case for complex homogenous manifolds (i.e., when the group of automorphisms Aut(X) acts transitively on X). Indeed, if X is a complex homogeneous manifold, then every positive closed current T can be approximated by positive smooth forms θ ɛ {T } (see [23]). Therefore, any class can be represented by a semi-positive form. If X is a compact Kähler surface and λ (f ) 2 >λ 2 (f ), it is well known that λ is a simple eigenvalue (see [0]). Furthermore, the corresponding eigenvector α H, (X, R) can be represented by a positive closed (, ) current with bounded potentials (see [9]). Thus, in this case ( ) holds. However, there are some examples for which the condition ( ) does not hold. Example 4.2 Let f : P 2 P 2 f [x 0 : x : x 2 ]= [ x 2 0 : x2 : x2 2].
