7 PS : Indian Standard RECOMMENDATION ON NOMINAL CAPACITIES FOR PROCESS EQUIPMENT 0. FOREW ORD 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 18 August 1964, after the draft finalized by the Chemical Engineering Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council. 0.2 Chemical equipment come in various capacities and are designed to various temperature and pressure conditions. To help the fabricator to offer standard equipment and for the user to order equipment on such basis, it is very necessary to lay down a rationalized series of preferred capacities, diameters, temperatures and pressures. 0.3 The capacities recommended in this standard are based on series of preferred numbers ( see IS: * ), R 5 series being used up to litre capacities and R 10 series after that. 0.4 In preparation of this standard, considerable assistance has been taken from DIN Nominal capacities of chemical equipment, issued by the Deutscher Normenausschuss. 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expresiing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2.196Ot. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE I.1 This standard deals with the nominal capacities of containers and process vessels used in chemical industry. 2. TERMlNOLOGY 2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the following definition shall apply, *Preferred nunibers. ( Since revised j. *Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). 3

8 IS : Nominal Capacity- The capacity used in designating the process vessel. It is a rounded off ( lower ) value of the calculated capacity of the container which includes the volume of the lids and dished ends, but does not include the volume of nozzles and corrections due to internals. 3. NOMINAL CAPACITY 3.1 The recommended nominal capacities shall be as given in Table 1.
