I this paper, we prove that i a fiite dimesioal probabilistic ormed space, every two probabilistic orms are equivalet ad we study the otio of D- compactess ad D-boudedess i probabilistic ormed spaces. Keywords. Probabilistic ormed space; fiite dimesioal ormed space; D-bouded; D-compact.. Itroductio ad prelimiaries K Meger itroduced the otio of a probabilistic metric space i 942 ad sice the the theory of probabilistic metric spaces has developed i may directios [8]. The idea of Meger was to use distributio fuctios istead of oegative real umbers as values of the metric. The otio of a probabilistic metric space correspods to situatios whe we do ot kow exactly the distace betwee two poits, but we kow oly probabilities of possible values of this distace. Such a probabilistic geeralizatio of metric spaces appears to be well adapted for the ivestigatio of physical quatities ad physiological thresholds. It is also of fudametal importace i probabilistic fuctioal aalysis. Probabilistic ormed spaces were itroduced by Šerstev [9] i 962 by meas of a defiitio that was closely modelled o the theory of (classical) ormed spaces, ad used to study the problem of best approximatio i statistics. I the sequel, we shall adopt the usual termiology, otatio ad covetios of the theory of probabilistic ormed spaces, as i [,2,4 8,0]. I the sequel, the space of probability distributio fuctios (briefly, d.f.) is + = {F: R [0,]: F is left-cotiuous, odecreasig, F(0)=0 ad F(+ ) = } ad the subset D + + is the set D + ={F + : l F(+ )=}. Here l f(x) deotes the left limit of the fuctio f at the poit x, l f(x)=lim t x f(t). The space + is partially ordered by the usual poit-wise orderig of fuctios, i.e., F G if ad oly if F(x) G(x), for all x i R. The maximal elemet for + i this order is the 483

A triagle fuctio is a biary operatio o +, amely a fuctio τ: that is associative, commutative, odecreasig ad which has ε 0 as uit, that is τ(τ(f,g),h)=τ(f,τ(g,h)), τ(f,g)=τ(g,f), F G= τ(f,h) τ(g,h), τ(f,ε 0 )=F for all F,G,H +. Cotiuity of triagle fuctios meas cotiuity with respect to the topology of weak covergece i +. Typical cotiuous triagle fuctios are τ T (F,G)(x) = sup s+t=x T(F(s),G(t)) ad τ T (F,G) = if s+t=x T (F(s),G(t)). Here T is a cotiuous t-orm, i.e., a cotiuous biary operatio o[0, ] that is commutative, associative, odecreasig i each variable ad has as idetity; T is a cotiuous t-coorm, amely a cotiuous biary operatio o[0,] which is related to the cotiuous t-orm T through T (x,y)= T( x, y). The defiitio below is more geeral, it has bee proposed i []. DEFINITION. A probabilistic ormed space (briefly, a PN space) is a quadruple (V,ν,τ,τ ), where V is a real vector space, τ ad τ are cotiuous triagle fuctios with τ τ ad ν is a mappig (the probabilistic orm) from V ito +, such that for every choice of p ad q i V the followig hold: (N) ν p = ε 0 if ad oly if p=θ (θ is the ull vector i V); (N2) ν p = ν p ; (N3) ν p+q τ(ν p,ν q ); (N4) ν p τ (ν λ p,ν ( λ)p ) for every λ [0,]. A PN space is called a Šerstev space if it satisfies (N), (N3) ad the followig coditio: For every α 0 R ad x>0 oe has ( ) x ν α p (x)=ν p, α which clearly implies (N2) ad also (N4) i the stregtheed form λ [0,], ν p = τ M (ν λ p,ν ( λ)p ). A PN space i which τ = τ T ad τ = τ T for a suitable cotiuous t-orm T ad its t-coorm T is called a Meger PN space. Lemma 2. [2]. If α β, the ν β p ν α p for every p i V.
3 Fiite-dimesioal probabilistic ormed spaces 485 Lemma 3. [2]. If τ is Archimedea, the for every p i V such that ν p ε ad every h>0, there is a δ > 0 such that α <δ = ν α p (h)> h. I this case PN space is a topological vector space (shortly, TVS). We call every PN space with the above properties as strog TVS. DEFINITION 4. [8]. Let (V,ν,τ,τ ) be a PN space. For each p i V ad λ > 0, the strog λ -eighborhood of p is the set N p (λ)={q V: ν p q (λ)> λ}, ad the strog eighborhood system for V is the uio p V N p where N p = {N p (λ): λ > 0}. The strog eighborhood system for V determies a Hausdorff topology for V. DEFINITION 5. [8]. Let (V,ν,τ,τ ) be a PN space, a sequece {p } i V is said to be strogly coverget to p i V if for each λ > 0, there exists a positive iteger N such that p N p (λ), for N. Also the sequece {p } i V is called strogly Cauchy sequece if for every λ > 0 there is a positive iteger N such that ν p p m (λ)> λ, wheever m,>n. A PN space (V,ν,τ,τ ) is said to be strogly complete i the strog topology if ad oly if every strogly Cauchy sequece i V is strogly coverget to a poit i V. DEFINITION 6. [5]. Let(V,ν,τ,τ ) be a PN space ad A be the oempty subset of V. The probabilistic radius of A is the fuctio R A defied o R + by { l if{ν p (x): p A}, if x [0,+ ), R A (x)= DEFINITION 7. [5]., if x=+. A oempty set A i a PN space(v,ν,τ,τ ) is said to be: (a) certaily bouded, if R A (x 0 )= for some x 0 (0,+ ); (b) perhaps bouded, if oe has R A (x)<, for every x (0,+ ) ad l R A (+ )=; (c) perhaps ubouded, if R A (x 0 )>0 for some x 0 (0,+ ) ad l R A (+ ) (0,); (d) certaily ubouded, if l R A (+ )=0, i.e., if R A = ε. Moreover, A is said to be distributioally bouded, or simply D-bouded if either (a) or (b) holds, i.e., R A D +. If R A + \D +, A is called D-ubouded. Theorem 8 [5]. A subset A i the PN space(v,ν,τ,τ ) is D-bouded if ad oly if there exists a d.f. G D + such that ν p G for every p A. If A R is D-bouded the i geeral A is ot classically bouded.
4 486 Reza Saadati ad Massoud Amii Example 9. We cosider the PN space (R,ν,τ,M), where τ is a triagle fuctio such that τ(ε c,ε d ) ε c+d, M is the maximal triagle fuctio ad the probabilistic orm ν: R + is defied by ν p = ε p for every p i R ad for a fixed a > 0, with a+ p ν p (+ )= (see Theorem 5 of [3]). With this orm, R is D-bouded because ν p ε. DEFINITION 0. We say that the probabilistic orm ν: R + has the Lafuerza Guillé property (briefly, the LG-property) if, for every x>0, lim p ν p (x)=0, or, equivaletly, lim p ν p = ε. Example. The probabilistic orm i the last example does ot have the LG-property. Example 2. The quadruple(r,ν,τ π,τπ), where ν: R + is defied by 0, if x=0, ν p (x)= exp( p /2 ), if 0<x<+,, if x=+, ad ν 0 = ε 0 is a PN space (see []) but is ot Šerstev space ad the probabilistic orm has the LG-property. Lemma 3. I a PN space (R,ν,τ,τ ) i which the probabilistic orm has the LGproperty, if A R is D-bouded the it is classically bouded. Proof. If A R is D-bouded, there exists a d.f. G D + such that ν p G, for every p A but if A is ot classically bouded, the for every k > 0 there exists a p A such that p >k. Hece lim p ν p (x)=0. Therefore for every x (0,+ ) we have G(x)=0, which is a cotradictio. The coverse of the above lemma is, i geeral, ot true. See Example 2. Here the oly D-bouded set is the sigleto{θ}. Theorem 4. If the PN space(r,ν,τ,τ ) is a TVS the it is complete. Proof. Let{p m } be strogly Cauchy sequece, for every m, N m> we have lim ν p m, m p = ε 0. By TVS property we have ν limm, (p m p ) = ε 0 = ν 0. Hece{p m } is a classical Cauchy sequece i R; therefore, it is coverget to p R, i.e., p m p 0, sice the PN space is TVS we have lim m ν pm p = ν 0 = ε Fiite dimesioal PN space I this sectio, we are iterested i some properties of a fiite dimesioal PN space, i particular we itroduce the defiitio of equivalet orms i a PN space.
5 Fiite-dimesioal probabilistic ormed spaces 487 Theorem 5. Let {p,..., p } be a liearly idepedet set of vectors i a PN space (V,ν,τ,τ ) such that τ is Archimedea ad ν p ε, for every p V. The there is a umber c 0 ad there exists a probabilistic orm ν : R + o the real PN space (R,ν,τ,τ ) where τ is Archimedea ad ν p ε, such that for every choice of real scalars α,...,α we have ν α p + +α p ν c( α + + α ). () Proof. We write s = α + + α. If s = 0, all α are zero, so () holds. Let s > 0. We defie µ p = ν sp ad µ r = ν sr. The () is equivalet to the followig iequality, ( ) µ β p + +β p µ c, β = α /s, β =. (2) = Hece it suffices to prove the existece of c 0 ad µ such that (2) holds. Suppose otherwise, the there exists a sequece{q m } of vectors ( ) q m = β (m) p + + β (m) p, β (m) =, = such that µ qm ε 0 as m. Sice = β(m) =, we have β (m). Hece, the sequece {β (m) } has a coverget subsequece. Let β deote the limit of such a subsequece, ad let {q,m } deote the correspodig subsequece of {q m }. By the same argumet,{q,m } has a subsequece{q 2,m } for which the correspodig sequece of real scalars {β (m) 2 } coverges say to β 2. Cotiuig this process, we obtai a subsequece {q,m } of{q m } such that ad γ (m) q,m = = γ (m) p, β as m. Hece lim q,m = q := m where = β =, sice ( ) γ (m) = = = β p, µ q,m q = µ = (γ (m) β )p τ (µ (γ (m) β )p,..., µ (γ (m) β )p ) ε 0 as m. Sice {p,..., p } is liearly idepedet ad ot all β s are zero, we have q θ. Sice µ qm ε 0, we have µ q,m ε 0. But, µ q = µ (q q,m )+q,m τ(µ q q,m, µ q,m ) ε 0, ad hece q=θ. This cotradicts q θ.
6 488 Reza Saadati ad Massoud Amii The followig example shows that i the above theorem we eed the field R to be a strog TVS. Example 6. Cosider the PN space (R,ν,τ,τ ) where τ is Archimedea ad ν p ε. By the above theorem there exists a c 0 ad a probabilistic orm ν : R + such that ν p ν cp. If i the PN space (R,ν,τ,τ ) lim m ν p m < ε 0 wheever p m 0 i R, the for the sequece {2 } we have ν 2 ν c2 ad cosequetly ε 0 < ε 0, which is a cotradictio. From ow o all the fields are strog TVS. Theorem 7. Every fiite dimesioal subspace W of a PN space(v,ν,τ,τ ) where τ is Archimedea ad ν p ε for every p V, is complete. I particular, every fiite dimesioal PN space is complete. Proof. Let {q m } be a strog Cauchy sequece i W. Let dimw = ad {w,...,w } be a liearly idepedet subset of W. The each q m has a uique represetatio of the form q m = α (m) w + + α (m) w. Sice{q m } is a strog Cauchy sequece, for every h>0 there is a positive iteger N such that ν qm q k (h)> h wheever m,k N. By the above theorem ad Lemma 2, we have, for every =,2,...,, h< ν qm q k (h) = ν = (α (m) ν c = α(m) ν c α (m) α (k) (h) )w (h) α (k) α (k) (h), where c 0, ν : R + ad m,k N. This shows that each of the sequeces{α (m) } m where =,2,..., is a strog Cauchy i (R,ν,τ,τ ). Hece it coverges, say to α. Now let us defie q=α w + + α w. Clearly, q W. Furthermore, ν qm q = ν = (α (m) α )w τ (ν (α (m) α )w,...,ν (α (m) α )w ), teds to ε 0 wheever m. That is q m strogly coverges to q. Hece W is complete. DEFINITION 8. A probabilistic orm ν: V + is said to be equivalet to a probabilistic orm µ: V + ν µ, if p m p is equivalet to p m p.
7 Fiite-dimesioal probabilistic ormed spaces 489 I the followig example two equivalet orms i probabilistic ormed space are give. Example 9. We cosider two PN space (V,ν,τ,τ ) with probabilistic orm ν p = ε p where τ(ε c,ε d )=ε c+d,(c>0,d > 0) ad τ τ (see Example of [5]) ad(v, µ,τ,m) with probabilistic orm µ p = ε p,a > 0 (see Theorem 5 of [3]). It is easy to see that a+ p the two probabilistic orms are equivalet ad so idetity map J: V V is cotiuous. Theorem 20. If V is a fiite dimesioal vector spaces, the every two probabilistic orms ν of (V,ν,τ,τ ) ad µ of (V, µ,τ,τ ) are equivalet, wheever τ ad τ are Archimedea, ν p ε, ad µ p ε, for every p i V. ν Proof. Let {v,...,v } be a liearly idepedet subset of V. Let p m p. We kow that both p m ad p have a uique represetatio as p m = α (m) v + + α (m) v, ad p=α v + +α v. By Theorem 5 ad Lemma 2, we have ν pm p = ν = (α (m) ν α )v c = α(m) α ν c α (m), α where c 0 ad ν : R +. Therefore lim m ν c( α (m) α (m) α i R. But = α ) ν = ε 0, that is c(lim m α (m) α ) µ pm p = µ = (α (m) τ (µ (m),..., µ (m) ), α )v (α α )v (α α )v so by cotiuity of τ µ µ ν we have p m p. By the same argumet p m p implies p m p. I the ext example we show that there are two PN spaces which are ot equivalet eve i a fiite dimesioal probabilistic ormed space. Ideed, sice τ M is ot Archimedea, the first PN space i the ext example is ot strog TVS. Example 2. We cosider PN space (R,ν,τ W,τ M ) where ν 0 = ε 0 ad ν p = p +2 ε 0+ p + p +2 ε for p 0, we kow τ M is ot Archimedea, (see [2]) ad PN space (R,ν,τ,τ ) with probabilistic orm ν p = ε p where τ(ε c,ε d ) = ε c+d,(c > 0,d > 0) ad τ τ (see Example of [5]). Now, the sequece{/} i the first PN space is ot coverget but i the secod it is coverget. Therefore the above PN spaces are ot equivalet. 3. D-bouded ad D-compact sets i PN spaces Theorem 22. Let (V,ν,τ,τ ) be a PN space i which ν(v) D + ad D + is ivariat uder τ, i.e., τ(d + D + ) D +. If p m p i V ad A={p m : m N}, the A is a D- bouded subset of V. Proof. Let p m p. The there exists a positive iteger N such that for every m N we have ν pm p G, for each G D +. Therefore ν pm τ(ν pm p,ν p ) τ(g,ν p ). If we put H = mi{ν p,...,ν pn,τ(g,ν p )}, the H D + ad ν pm H, for every m N. Hece A is a D-bouded set.
8 490 Reza Saadati ad Massoud Amii Note that, i the Example 2 i which ν(v) + \D +, the sequece { m } is coverget but A= { m : m N} is ot a D-bouded set. DEFINITION 23. The PN space (V,ν,τ,τ ) is said to be distributioally compact (simply D-compact) if every sequece {p m } m i V has a coverget subsequece {p mk }. A subset A of a PN space(v,ν,τ,τ ) is said to be D-compact if every sequece{p m } i A has a subsequece {p mk } coverget to a vector p A. Lemma 24. A D-compact subset of a PN space(v,ν,τ,τ ) i which ν(v) D + ad D + is ivariat uder τ, is D-bouded ad closed. Proof. Suppose that A V is D-compact. If A is D-ubouded, it cotais a D-ubouded sequece {p m } such that ν pm < ε m. This sequece could ot have a coverget subsequece, sice a coverget sequece must be D-bouded by Theorem 22. The closedess of A is trivial. As i the classical case, a D-bouded ad closed subset of a (fiite dimesioal) PN space is ot D-compact i geeral, as oe ca see from the ext examples. Example 25. We cosider quadruple (Q,ν,τ π,τ t2 ), where π(a,b) = a.b, t 2 (a,b) =, for every a,b (0,) ad probabilistic orm ν +[((/a) ) 2 +((/b) ) 2 ] p(t) = t. /2 t+ p /2 It is straightforward to check that (Q,ν,τ π,τ t2 ) is a PN space. I this space, covergece of a sequece is equivalet to its covergece i R. We cosider the subset t A=[a,b] Q, where a,b R\Q. Sice R A (t)= t+(max{ a, b }) /2, the A is a D-bouded set ad sice A is closed i Q classically, ad so is closed i (Q,ν,τ π,τ t2 ). We kow A is ot classically compact i Q, i.e., there exists a sequece i Q with o coverget subsequece i a classical sese ad so i (Q,ν,τ π,τ t2 ). Hece A is ot D- compact. Example 26. We cosider the PN space itroduced i Example 9. With this probabilistic orm, R is D-bouded ad closed. But R is ot D-compact, because the sequece {2 m } i R does ot have ay coverget subsequece i this space. Example 27. The quadruple(r, ν, τ, M), where M is the maximal triagle fuctio, ad the probabilistic orm is a map ν: R + such that ν 0 = ε 0, ν p = ε a+ p if p 0, (a> a 0), ad τ(ε c,ε d ) ε c+d,(c > 0,d > 0), is a PN space (see Theorem 4 of [3]). If A is a oempty, classically bouded set i R, the there exists s > 0 such that for every p A we have p s. Sice ν p ε a+s, A is D-bouded. Also it is trivial that A is closed. Now a we show that A is ot D-compact. Assume, if possible, that A is D-compact ad {p m } be a arbitrary sequece i A which has a subsequece {p mk } coverget to some p i A, the we have lim k ν pmk p = lim k ε a+ pmk p a ε 0. This implies that p is ot i A, a cotradictio. Theorem 28. Cosider a fiite dimesioal PN space (V,ν,τ,τ ), where τ is Archimedea, ν p ε, ad ν(v) D + ad D + is ivariat uder τ, for every p V o the real field (R,ν,τ,τ ), where ν has the LG-property. Every subset A of V is D-compact if ad oly if A is D-bouded ad closed.
9 Fiite-dimesioal probabilistic ormed spaces 49 Proof. By Lemma 24, D-compact subsets A of V are D-bouded ad closed, so we eed to prove the coverse. Let dimv = ad {w,...,w } be a liearly idepedet subset of V. We cosider ay sequece{q m } i A. Each q m has a represetatio q m = α (m) w + +α (m) w. Sice A is D-bouded so is{q m }, ad so there exists a d.f. G D + such that G ν qm ν α (m) w + +α (m) w. By Theorem 5 ad Lemma 2, we have ν c( α (m) + + α (m) ) ν c α (m). Hece for each fixed, the sequece {α (m) } is D-bouded ad sice ν has the LGproperty the by Lemma 3, it is also classically bouded. Therefore for every the sequece {α (m) } has a coverget subsequece covergig to some α, =,...,. As i the proof of Theorem 5, we ca costruct a subsequece {r m } of {q m } which coverges to r := = α w. Sice A is closed, r A. This shows that each sequece {q m } i A has a coverget subsequece i A. Hece A is D-compact.
