New Anomalies in Cosmic Micowave Backgound Anisotopy: Violation of the Isotopic Gaussian Hypothesis in Low-l Modes Shi Chun, Su and M.-C., Chu Depatment of Physics and Institute of Theoetical Physics, axiv: v2 [asto-ph] 16 May 2008 The Chinese Univesity of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong (Dated: Octobe 24, 2018) Abstact In the standad famewok of cosmology, pimodial density fluctuations ae assumed to have an isotopic Gaussian distibution. We seach fo deviations fom this assumption in the WMAP data fo the low l modes of Cosmic Micowave Backgound Anisotopies (CMBA), by studying the diections of the z-axis that maximize the l = m modes and the esulting amplitudes of these modes. We find a geneal alignment of the diections fo l = 2 to 10 modes to within 1/4 of the nothen hemisphee. This alignment can be egaded as a genealization of the ecently discoveed alignment of the l = 2 and 3 modes - the so-called Axis of Evil. Futhemoe, we find abnomally high (low) powes in the l = m = 6, (l = m = 5) modes; the pobabilities fo having the anomalous amplitudes of the l = m = 5, 6, 17 modes ae about 0.1%, 1% and 1% espectively accoding to the Gaussian conjectue. The alignment and anomalous amplitudes fo these low l modes ae vey obust against foegound contamination o diffeent cleaning stategies, suggesting a cosmological oigin and possibly suppoting a non-standad inflation. 2 Moden theoies of cosmology ae based on thee postulates: homogeneity and isotopy of the Univese, and pimodial fluctuations of density. These thee postulates have been veified to a lage extent by the obsevation of the Cosmic Micowave Backgound Anisotopies (CMBA) and the lage scale stuctues of the Univese. One usually assumes that the fluctuations ae statistically isotopic and Gaussian. Theefoe, when one expands the tempeatueanisotopy T(θ,φ) = T(θ,φ) T 0 (T Kisthemeanblackbodytempeatue today) of the CMBA obseved today into spheical hamonics: l T(θ,φ) = a lm Y lm (θ,φ), (1) l=1 m= l the a lm s ae expected to follow a gaussian distibution among diffeent samples of the Last Scatteing Suface (LSS) as seen fom diffeent locations of the Univese. Unfotunately, we can obseve a sample of the LSS at a paticula time in a paticula position only. Thee is inevitably a statistical uncetainty (cosmic vaiance), no matte how accuate ou obsevation is. Recently, some anomalies in the WMAP data fo low l s, which ae found to be inconsistent with the isotopic gaussian hypothesis (IGH) of the pimodial fluctuations, ae widely studied (e.g., [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]). The most famous anomalies ae the low quadupole amplitude C 2, whee (2l +1)C l = lm= l a lm 2, and the alignment of multipoles fo l = 2 and 3, which is known as the Axis of Evil (AOE). Although some may ague that we may just be obseving a stange univese by accident due to the cosmic vaiance, many othe suggestions have been offeed to explain the anomalies (e.g., [8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14]). Some claim that the foegound contaminations (e.g., [11, 12]), especially those fom the galactic plane o the Vigo supecluste (towads whee the alignment of l = 2 and 3 multipoles diects), may give ise to the anomalies. The foegound-cleaning stategies commonly used cannot povide CMBA maps that ae fee of foegound contamination esidues. Moe inteestingly, some popose that the anomalies ae tue anisotopic signals fom the ealy Univese and suggest possible mechanisms of poducing them (e.g., [13, 14]). It is of obvious impotance and inteest to distinguish among these thee possibilities. In this pape, we discuss seveal new anomalies which will make it moe difficult to attibute the anomalies to coincidence. We also analyze how the galactic plane and othe foegound contaminations affect the anomalies and show that they most likely do not give ise to the anomalies. 2
We analyze lm max ˆn a l0 2 (2l+1)C l, m = 0 2 a lm 2 (2l+1)C l, m 0. Hee, lm measues the maximum contibution of the multipole (l,m) to the tempeatue powe spectum among all possible diections ˆn of the z-axis (θ = 0). We denote the diection ˆn whee lm is found as ˆn max. Equation (2) povides not only a measuement of the multipoles alignment, but also an indication of how dominant a multipole is ove othe m modes of the same l. In [6], l = max m lm is studied instead of lm. Howeve, the distibution of values of lm s can be diffeent fo diffeent m s of the same l in geneal, leading to diffeent expectation values of lm. Theefoe, l = max m lm is biased to some paticula multipoles m (m l/2) which have lage expectation values of lm. We theefoe study lm sepaately. We analyze the 3-yea full-sky WMAP Intenal Linea Combination (WILC3YR) map eleased by the WMAP team[15]. We also geneate 100,000 Monte Calo simulations with the IGH so as to study the statistical popeties of lm s and ˆn max s. These statistics ae then used to detemine if any of those lm s and ˆn max s fom the obseved CMBA data ae anomalous unde the IGH. In the lowe ight gaph of the Fig. 1, we locate the diections ˆn max fo l = m = 2 to 10, indicated by the coesponding numbes on a Mollweide pojection of the sky fo the WILC3YR map. The Galactic coodinate system is used and otated by 180 aound the z-axis fo bette view. The diections ˆn max ae two-folded, i.e. a diection ˆn max of a multipole (l,m) in the nothen hemisphee must have a coesponding diection ˆn max in the southen hemisphee giving the same value of lm. Hee, we show only the ˆn max s of the multipoles in the nothen hemisphee of the map. We find fom the sky map that the diections ˆn max fo l = m = 2 to 10 concentate within 1/5 of the solid angle of the nothen hemisphee. Futhemoe, simila to the well-known alignment of the l = m = 2 and l = m = 3 multipoles, thee is an equally stong alignment of the l = m = 5 and l = m = 6 multipoles. The pobability to have such a new AOE unde the IGH is only 1%. In Fig. 2, the values of ll s fom the WILC3YR map ae shown against l by the sta symbols while the lines indicate the median and 99% confidence levels (solid and dash lines) of the 100,000 Monte Calo data unde the IGH. Fom Fig. 2, we see that the values of ll s fom the WILC3YR map show a geneal deceasing tend as l inceases. This tend 3 (2)
LILC TCM3YR SILC400 WILC FIG. 1: The Mollweide pojection of the full sky showing the diections ˆn max of l = m = 2 to 10 multipoles (indicated by the coesponding numbes) in the fou diffeent foegound-cleaned CMBA maps: LILC, SILC400, TCM3YR and WILC3YR map. The sky maps ae otated by 180 aound the z-axis fo bette view. The diections ˆn max ae two-folded with espect to the oigin. Only those ˆn max s in the nothen hemisphee ae shown. is consistent with the aveaged values of the simulated ll s unde the IGH. Also, most ll s obtained fom the WILC3YR map ae consistent with these expected values within 90% confidence level with a few exceptions. Fist, we find that 55 obtained fom the WILC3YR map is much smalle than the IGH s median of 55. The pobability to have such a small 55 with the IGH is about 0.1%. Second, anothe inteesting but less significant anomaly is the unusually lage value of 66. This anomaly can be epoduced by the IGH with about 1% chance. Thid, fom l = 12 to 16, the values of ll fom obsevational data ae all slightly lage than the IGH s median athe than fluctuating aound the latte. Finally, ll fo l = 17 is abnomally lage, with a value that has less than 1% pobability unde the IGH, and it also aligns with the diections ˆn max fo l = m = 5 and 6 to within 5. We study how obust these anomalies ae in seveal ways: Diffeent cleaning methods We apply the same analysis to thee othe foegound-cleaned WMAP maps: LILC[16], SILC400[17] and TCM3YR[18]. Thei diections ˆn max of l = m multipoles ae shown in Fig. 1 togethe with those of the WILC3YR map. We can see that almost all the ˆn max ae consistent fo the fou CMBA maps. The only exception is the l = m = 5 multipole fom 4
TCM3YR which shows a weake alignment with the l = m = 6 multipole. Nevetheless, the geneal alignment fo l = m = 2 to 10 multipoles is still stong. Even fo the wost case (TCM3YR), these diections ˆn max concentate within 1/4 solid angle of the noth hemisphee. The fact that a stong alignment of l = m = 5 and 6 multipoles pesists in the othe thee maps suggests that it is a tue anomaly. We also pefom the same analysis on the WILC map with the 5-yea data [19] (not shown). The diections ˆn max fo all l s fom 2 to 10 ae consistent with those of the 3-yea data except that fo l = 8 points to a vey diffeent diection. In Fig. 3, we show the values of ll s fom all fou foegound-cleaned CMBA maps. We can see that the dependence of the ll s on diffeent cleaning schemes ae small fo most l s fom 2 to 20. This consistency suggests that all anomalies mentioned above ae obust featues. In paticula, the negligible dispesion of 55 keeps the pobability of having such a small value of 55 as 0.1%. Although the value of 66 fom the TCM3YR map is significantly less than those of the othe thee maps, it is still well above the 90%pobability egion unde the IGH. Similaly, the anomaly of ll fo l = 17 is still pesent fo all the fou foegoundcleaned maps. Also, the suge of ll fom l = 12 to 16 ove thei IGH s median pesists. We emak that the dispesion of 44 is exceptionally lage but it is not elated to any anomalies. Effects of the foegound contaminations 5
Median P10% P1% P0.1% P90% P99% P99.9% LILC SILC400 TCM3YR WILC3YR FIG. 3: Same as Fig. 2, but with data fom all the fou foegound-cleaned CMB maps. In ode to examine the effects of the foegound contaminations on the anomalies, we intoduce a simple but aggessive method: a egion of the CMBA map is eplaced by a weighted aveage of the CMBA T and a simulated T IGH unde the IGH, i.e. T = α T + (1 α) T IGH, whee T is the obseved tempeatue anisotopy and α anges fom 0 to 1. It is possible that the foegound contaminations as a deteministic effect changes the statistical popeties of the CMBA signals unde the IGH, e.g. shifting the mean values of lm and concentating the diections ˆn max. Convesely, the pesistence of the anomalies afte the eplacement assues us that these foegound contaminations cannot independently poduce the anomalies. The method is aggessive because it eases patially the eal signals fom LSS (which may violate the IGH itself) as well as the contaminations. If the anomalies ae eliminated afte the substitution, it is difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish between the contibutions due to loss of eal signals and contaminations. Theefoe, the analysis is good at excluding contaminations as a candidate of explaining the anomalies but not at suppoting it. The advantage of using this method is that it is valid even fo dealing with unknown contamination esidues. We apply the method to study the effects of the foegound contaminations on the galactic plane (plus point souces) and at the Vigo supecluste as potential souces to poduce the anomalies. Fo the galactic plane, we use the widely used standad intensity mask - kp2, which coves 15.3% of the full sky including the galactic plane and point souces, as the egion of the eplacement, and α is set to be 0.5. The aveaged values of ll s of the modified maps ove 1000 simulations ae plotted against l in Fig. 4. We can see that all anomalies of ll s 6

The depessed (boosted) value of 55 ( 66 ) emains at about 1% (10%) pobability unde the IGH. The suge of values of ll s fom l = 12 to 16 still exists obviously, and the value of 17,17 is still abnomal at about 99% confidence level. The diections ˆn max fo l = 2,3,4,6,7 and 10 unde eplacements stay nea thei oiginal diections. Although those fo l = 5,8 and 9 may point away to othe possible diections, they gathe in diffeent patches espectively instead of speading all ove the sky. Among these patches, only one fo l = 5 and one fo l = 8 diect outsides the oiginal egion of the concentation o the genealized AOE. In ode to test if the anomalies ae caused by the foegound contamination at the Vigo supecluste, we eplace 50% of signals fom the Vigo supecluste by simulated data unde the IGH. The esults fo ll s ae shown in Fig , 66, and 17,17 ae still anomalous at ove 99%, 90% and 90% level espectively and the suge fo l = m = 12 to 16 emains. Futhemoe, such a eplacement does not affect the geneal alignment of the low l modes, with only the ˆn max of l = m = 8 pointing away fom the genealized AOE fo the TCM3YR map. We will give moe details on how the ˆn max s change unde foegound contaminations in a coming pape. The geneal alignment of the diections ˆn max s fo l = 2 to 10 within 1/4 of the nothen hemisphee is vey obust and is unlikely to be eliminated by foegound contaminations o cleaning stategies. Futhemoe, the anomalies of 55, 66, 17,17 and the suge of ll s fo 7
l = 12 to 16 togethe ae highly inconsistent with the IGH and obust against foegound cleanings. In fact, the values of 55, 66 and 17,17 ae anomalous unde the IGH at about 10 3, 10 2 and 10 2 levels espectively, which is extemely stange by coincidence. Ou esults theefoe favo tue cosmological oigins of the anomalies and possibly suppot a non-standad inflation. Ou analysis made use of HEALPIX [20, 21].
