1 AFFINE FACTORABLE SURFACES IN ISOTROPIC SPACES arxiv: v [math.dg] Feb 08 MUHITTIN EVREN AYDIN AYLA ERDUR MAHMUT ERGUT 3 Abstract. In this paper we study the problem of finding the affine factorable surfaces in a 3 dimensional isotropic space with prescribed Gaussian K) and mean H) curvature. Because the absolute figure two different types of these surfaces appear by permutation of coordinates. We firstly classify the affine factorable surfaces of type with K H constants. Afterwards we provide the affine factorable surfaces of type with K = const. and H = 0. In addition in a particular case the affine factorable surfaces of type with H = const. were obtained.. Introduction Let R 3 be a 3-dimensional Euclidean space with usual coordinates xyz) and wxy) : R R be a smooth real-valued function of variables. Then its graph given by z = wxy) is a smooth surface with an atlas that consists of only the following patch r : R R 3 xy) xywxy)). Notice also that every surface in R 3 is locally a part of the graph z = wxy) if its normal is not parallel to the xy plane. Otherwise the regularity assures that it is a part of the graph x = wyz) or y = wxz). See [9 p. 9]. These graphs are also called Monge surfaces [ p. 30]. Because our target is to solve prescribed Gaussian K) and mean H) curvature type equations in a 3-dimensional isotropic space I 3 it is naturally reasonable to focus on graph surfaces. By separation of variables we study the graphs z = wxy) = f x)f y) so-called factorable or homothetical surface for smooth functions f f of single variable. Many results on the factorable surfaces in other 3-dimensional spaces were made so far see [ ]. This kind of surfaces also appear as invariant surfaces in the 3-dimensional space H R which is one of eight homogeneous geometries of Thurston. More clearly a certain type of translation surfaces in H R is the graph of y = f x)f y) see [35 p. 547]. For further details we refer to [ ]. Recently Zong Xiao Liu [39] defined affine factorable surfaces in R 3 as the graphs z = f x)f y +ax) a R a 0. They obtained these surfaces with K = 0 and H = const. It is clear that this class of surfaces is more general than the factorable surfaces. In this paper the problem of determining the affine factorable surfaces in I 3 with K H constants is considered. By permutation of the coordinates because the absolute figure of I 3 two different types of these surfaces appear i.e. the graphs of z = f x)f y +ax) and x = f y +az)f z) called affine factorable surface of 000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 53A35 53A40 53B5. In this manner our first concern is to obtain the affine factorable surfaces of type with KH constants. And then we present some results relating to the affine factorable surfaces of type with K = const. and H = 0. Furthermore in a particular case the affine factorable surfaces of type with H = const. were found.. Preliminaries In this section we provide some fundamental properties of isotropic geometry from [5]-[0][]-[5][ ]. For basics of Cayley-Klein geometries see also [5 6 34]. Let x 0 : x : x : x 3 ) denote the homogenous coordinates in a real 3-dimensional projectivespace P R 3). A3-dimensional isotropic space I 3 is a Cayley-Kleinspace definedin P R 3) in whichthe absolutefigureconsistofanabsolute plane ω andtwo absolute lines l l in ω. Thosearerespectivelygivenby x 0 = 0and x 0 = x ±ix = 0. The intersection point of these complex-conjugate lines is called absolute point 0 : 0 : 0 : ). The group of motions of I 3 is given by the 6 parameter group.) xyz) xỹ z) : x = θ +xcosθ ysinθ ỹ = θ +xsinθ +ycosθ z = θ 3 +θ 4 x+θ 5 y +z where xyz) denote the affine coordinates and θθ...θ 5 R. The isotropic metric induced by the absolute figure is given by ds = dx +dy. Due to the absolute figure there are two types of the lines and the planes: The isotropic lines and planes which are parallel to z axis and others called nonisotropic lines and planes. As an example the equation ax+by+cz = d determines a non-isotropic isotropic) plane if c 0 c = 0) abcd R. Let us consider an admissible surface without isotropic tangent planes). Then it parameterizes ruv) = xuv)yuv)zuv)) where x u y v x v y u 0 x u = x u because the admissibility. Notice that the admissible surfaces are regular too. Denote g and h the first and the second fundamental forms respectively. Then the components of g are calculated by the induced metric from I 3. The unit normal vector is 00) because it is orthogonal to all non-isotropic vectors. The components of h are given by h = detr uur u r v ) detg h = detr uvr u r v ) detg h = detr vvr u r v ) detg where r uu = r u u etc. Therefore the isotropic Gaussian or relative) and mean curvature are respectively defined by K = deth detg H = g h g h +g h detg where g ij ij = ) denotes the component of g. For convenience we call these Gaussian and mean curvatures. By a flat minimal) surface we mean a surface with vanishing Gaussian mean) curvature.

There does not exist a minimal affine factorable surface of type in I 3 except non-isotropic planes.

10 0 MUHITTIN EVREN AYDIN AYLA ERDUR MAHMUT ERGUT 3 where c...c 4 R c 0 because ω 3 0. Put p = df du and ṗ = dp in 4.) and 4.3). The derivative of 4.) with respect to f gives f f c +c p 4.4) ṗ = ) c c p ). Nevertheless plugging 4.) into 4.3) leads to 4.5) ṗ = c 3 +c 4 p c +c p. Equalizing 4.4) and 4.5) refers to the polynomial equation on p ξ +ξ p +ξ 3 p4 +ξ 4 p6 = 0 in which the following coefficients ξ = c 3 c c 3 ξ = 3c c c c 4 +c c 3 ξ 3 = 3c c +c c 4 ξ 4 = c 3 df = must vanish. Being ξ = ξ 4 = 0 implies c = c 4 = 0 and thus from 4.) and 4.4) we get f = c f = c f. Considering these ones into 4.7) leads to the polynomial equation on f [ 4.6) c f f f f )] f 3 +[ f +ac f +a c f ] f = 0 in which the fact that coefficients must vanish yields f +ac f = 0. This however contradicts with the regularity. Lemma 4.. Let an affine factorable surface of type in I 3 have nonzero constant mean curvature H 0. If f or f is a linear function then we have 4.7) wyz) = c H0 y +az c R. Proof. If f = c c R then 4.7) follows 4.8) H 0 c = f f )3. Solving 4.8) concludes f u ) = H 0 c 4H 0 c u +c +c 3 for c c 3 R. This proves the hypothesis of the lemma. If f = c 4 0 c 4 R then 4.7) reduces to [ ] H 0 ac 4 f +f f )3 = ac 4 f + c 4 f f c 4 f ) f +f f which is a polynomial equation on f. It is easy to see that the the coefficient of the term of degree 3 is f ) 3 which cannot vanish. This completes the proves.
