A. - area: Astrobiology (Currently guiding) Major Research activities: Experimental Solid State Physics: The research work of Dr. Godfrey has been in the area of experimental Solid State Physics. This work involved the growth of large single crystals and investigation of its elastic, thermal and electrical properties using mainly ultrasonic and electrical conductivity techniques. It also involved Phase transition study in crystals. He has produced 5 number of Ph. D s in this area. Astrobiology: on the Red Rain Phenomenon of Kerala 3

4 The strange red rain phenomenon of Kerala which happened in Kerala in 2001 was investigated by Dr.Godfrey and his student Dr. A. Santhosh Kumar in detail. Dr. Godfrey proposed a radically new theory about the origin of red rain of Kerala. This work on the red rain was published in the reputed international journal - Astrophysics and Space Science. in This publication received world wide attention. This theory says that the red biological cells, which caused the red rain in Kerala, are possibly of Extraterrestrial origin. Though this theory was not well appreciated in the beginning, many international scientists and world media are now taking this seriously. Science magazines from many advanced countries (UK, USA, France, Germany etc) have already published articles about this. The New Scientist magazine from UK published a cover story on this in March Research work of Dr. Godfrey on red rain is highlighted in a BBC documentary, which was broadcasted in UK in November 2006 and CNN website has a story about this work. He was invited to some of the international astrobiological conferences to speak about the research findings on the red rain phenomenon and has already given invited talks on this in Nordita Institute in Denmark (2004), Cardiff University in UK (2006), Interlaken in Switzerland (2006) and in the SPIE conference (August 2008) in San Diego, California, USA. This work is of fundamental importance as it is expected to provide more information on the origin and evolution of life. Several hundreds of internet websites are already discussing or reporting his research work on Kerala Red Rain. He has also given telephonic interviews on this which was broadcasted through radio in USA and UK. Many other results of this research has been presented in SPIE Conferences held in San Diego, California, USA in 2009, 2010 and Further work on the red rain cells are in progress. Currently one Ph. D student of Dr. Godfrey is working on the thermal modelling of Comets which will provide information regarding the mechanisms and conditions that leads to the presence of liquid water in Comets.
